No. Follow the law.

Crucially, that's not because Microsoft are more ethical - it's because they didn't figure it out first. The solution to this is not a better company, it's better adherence to and implementation of the existing laws.

You are conspicuously not noting how much Apple value the $89 billion they made on app store commissions last year.

The sky hasn't fallen for the 70% of smartphone users who have an Android.

It's so funny that every HN post on this topic produces more and more contrived reasons for why having less choice is better, actually. Today: my parents need to be coddled like children, so you don't get to install a new browser.

It's only because Apple's legal wrangling failed that Android even exists today.

>Why sign up for it?

Because, when you buy an Apple device, they shove free trials for subscription services down your throat in the hopes that you'll do exactly this. And it's not strange that they don't use it: the first thing you discover after starting the free trials is that they're useless and full of shovelware.

There's a ~90% chance it won't even go to trial.

It's the other way around. Trying to search for problems with Stable is more difficult because potential fixes require things your OS doesn't have yet.

You can't use 'just' when the thing you're suggesting is more work.

My experience working at companies using Linux machines to target Linux devices is that IT treat Linux as a headache or a toy OS. They like Windows. They like being able to give you an antivirus that cripples any compilation. They like being able to ignore fine-grained resource management - everyone needs to be a superuser to get anything done, anyway.

All the while, Voidtools have been doing it better, for free.

Buying McDonald's food does not make it legal for them to poison you. Buying Microsoft's OS does not make it legal for them to break antitrust law. Again.

Games companies seem to struggle to branch out. Like all the employees are put on one game at a time which takes longer to make than ever before. You can't polish a turd - why isn't putting all your eggs in one basket considered a risk? Why aren't these valuable IPs being exercised while we still remember what they are?

I don't buy that it suddenly takes 5 times longer to make a game. Voice acting and mocap FMVs are self-inflicted wounds. There are some genres like 'imsims' and metroidvanias which are so strongly defined by a few beleaguered series that talented indie devs have picked up the slack. Their great challenge is not making a good game, it's making the game be seen. Make a game with a similar team size but using an IP people remember fondly and you've got a hit. At worst, you've wasted a fraction of the budget Rockstar are spending on bespoke concrete textures.

Is it not non-deterministic by choice? A random factor added to prevent it from just choosing the deterministic most-likely next token.
devnullbrain··on Brains are not required to think or solve problems – simple cells can do it
If I stand up too quickly or hold my breath, it's consciousness that I start to lose, not my consciousness's control of my body. It seems to me that implies consciousness comes from the brain.

>people on this thread are trying to finesse the facts to support the theory they like.

Explicitly so, given that the root of this thread is saying it is a theory that they 'like', not that they think is objective truth.

Github is an unfortunate choice of example because the replies have fixated on it but there are a large number of sites that impose security cargo-culting to secure things that just don't need it. e.g. Why do I need to make an account with a password to pay a bill?

devnullbrain··on I Found David Lynch's Lost 'Dune II' Script
A few comments in this thread, including yours, have made me wonder: are you a fan of Dune and how Lynch adapted it, or are you a fan of Lynch's Dune?

Because the qualities you're describing sound very much like other Lynch films but not like Herbert's Dune.

devnullbrain··on I Found David Lynch's Lost 'Dune II' Script
Do you feel the same way about the Lord of the Rings films? The most common complaints about those are where it has strayed from the source material.

Dune isn't fully pure, either. It goes against the most frequent theme of the first book simply by 'shooting' scenes outside during the day. Caladan is much more fleshed out. It introduces new Bene Tleilax lore in the first film which is notable because Herbert himself didn't introduce them until there was a second book to write, omniscience to restrict and characters to resurrect. Looking at the trailers for the next film, Feyd Rautha is bald Elvis instead of a handsome Paul-like character and I'd be very surprised if all of the Baron's proclivities are retained.

Strong agree on all points. The gains from bumping e.g. a C++ version are much higher.
