devnullbrain··on What Is Dimensional Analysis?
That makes it an advantage if you learn it early enough. Some physics questions all the way up to college can be trivialised by understanding the units of the inputs and answer.
devnullbrain··on Googlers told to avoid words like ‘share’ and ‘bundle,’ US says
Isn't this essentially the conclusion the finance industry came to? Don't talk to coworkers, customers and partners outside of official channels.

Nvidia is worth over 3 times as much as it was at the start of the attempted acquisition.
devnullbrain··on Arm IPO to kick off today
It does when that involvement means they're one of the few architecture licensees. Allegedly.
devnullbrain··on Arm IPO to kick off today
Softbank has spent 7 years and a CEO finding out how difficult just raising prices is.
devnullbrain··on Arm IPO to kick off today
If anyone replying to this needs you to define ISA for them, their input isn't very useful.
devnullbrain··on Diamonds are losing their allure
>American couples date for about three years before getting engaged, and thanks to covid-19 very few people were out and about meeting potential husbands or wives in 2020. An unusually small number of people are probably getting engaged this year.

And all the people who would have got married during 2020 but couldn't?

devnullbrain··on Credit card debt collection
I think it's just inexact US terminology that has become global through the internet because they (IMO rightly) mostly use credit cards for normal purchases. My browser says it saves 'credit cards' - in reality it saves both credit and debit.

Try opening C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents\My Games
devnullbrain··on Any sufficiently advanced uninstaller is indistinguishable from malware
Then perhaps the distinction should be the programs called 'Windows installer' type in Explorer that TFA is talking about and not a blanket inclusion of all software that isn't ASM written on the device running it.
devnullbrain··on Any sufficiently advanced uninstaller is indistinguishable from malware
>If the only installer available was one provided by the OS

There's the non-sequitur. OP never said that this is what should happen. It is strange to leap to this assumption while also wanting to define portable programs and archives as 'installers'.

In the context of Windows, 'special' installers means the programs you run to be able to use a different program that don't appear on other OSes.

>any random code from the internet

Like installer.exe?

Installation-free software doesn't have to be web software.

devnullbrain··on Any sufficiently advanced uninstaller is indistinguishable from malware
How do you differentiate between download and install? Is self-modifying code repeatedly installing itself?
devnullbrain··on Any sufficiently advanced uninstaller is indistinguishable from malware
Not necessarily

devnullbrain··on Privacy Nightmare on Wheels’: Every Car Brand Reviewed by Mozilla
Any modern car with eCall will. Some will even make you pay for it.

Car dealerships are an insulating layer to protect manufacturers from the repercussions of the bullshit they inflict on customers. In exchange, dealerships are allowed to inject their own layer of bullshit.
devnullbrain··on Exa Is Deprecated
I switch between WSL/Powershell, US/UK keyboard layouts and Ubuntu/Windows/Mac shortcuts frequently. It only usually takes one mistake to context switch. It usually harder for me to switch to things I use infrequently - but they also matter less.

> "\" compared to "/"

Powershell :)

devnullbrain··on Chrome now tracks users and shares a “topic” list with advertisers
There are a few replies on performance here: I didn't notice at the time, I just did it because Google was still a 'cool' company.

In the intervening years I bounced between the two depending on which made the most asinine UI decisions but settled on Firefox when my FOSS sensibilities and distaste for Google hardened.

devnullbrain··on Exa Is Deprecated
There's a hint of a belief in this thread - common also in threads about alternative shells and Vim setups - that someone who uses a tool like this will irrevocably lose the knowledge of how to use ls.

Am I perhaps a genius or is it just not that difficult to know two tools?

devnullbrain··on Exa Is Deprecated
And exa users will still be allowed to use ls

You wouldn't be annoyed by spending 6 months in jail? You must be old!

It's very characteristic of HN to suggest that paying $1000/hr well in advance of the court date is better than spending time calling people.

devnullbrain··on “Autobesity”: More than 150 car models too big for regular UK parking spaces
>Manufacturers focus on the safety of the driver and passengers of the car. Not on the safety of anyone else.

This is not true. Euro NCAP ratings depend on how the car damages pedestrians:

https://www.euroncap.com/en/vehicle-safety/the-ratings-expla...

and crash avoidance technology:

https://www.euroncap.com/en/vehicle-safety/the-ratings-expla...

The effect this has on the cars on the market is huge. Jaguar and Mercedes had to remove their iconic badges, pop-up headlights disappeared, the fronts of cars are much higher and rounded to reduce head injuries in a crash, and every modern car has a multitude of crash avoidance technology that defaults to being turned on when the car is started.

devnullbrain··on Giving up the iPad-only travel dream
I haven't used an iPad keyboard but 160,000 words is about 159,000 more than I could stomach writing on a Macbook keyboard - which is the best laptop keyboard I've tried.

Perhaps I'm spoiled.
