devnullbrain··on Twitter Is DDOSing Itself
Entertainment is justified and good.
devnullbrain··on The man who broke bowling
Why must every sport change itself to become a TV spectacle equal in magnitude to the Superbowl? Is a sport that its players love a failure?
devnullbrain··on Apple joins opposition to encrypted message app scanning
>CCTV's were prevalent there much earlier than most other countries.

Cheaper than paying off-duty cops to watch your customers.

Calling private CCTV Orwellian seems like a confused metaphor. The CCTV in 1984 was run by the totalitarian government.

devnullbrain··on Outlook now ignores Windows' Default Browser and opens links in Edge by default
Google's behaviour is also bad but it is ahistorical to describe it as Google doing it first. Microsoft did it first, got sued, and lost. We're still being punished today with the fallout from the technical decisions made by Microsoft trying to prove IE was an integral part of the OS - if the file explorer crashes, your toolbar does too.
devnullbrain··on Outlook now ignores Windows' Default Browser and opens links in Edge by default
Thus making it 3 places you have to tell Windows what your default browser is

FWIW, desktop Windows 10 HDR is broken too.
devnullbrain··on Canada plans brain drain of H-1B visa holders, with no-job, no-worries permits
You can expect an influx of companies taking advantage of a base of talent. That's why startups pay SV rent.
devnullbrain··on Canada plans brain drain of H-1B visa holders, with no-job, no-worries permits
>Given that it is much more expensive to gain skill when you are a native

We can go abroad to study it for much cheaper. Alternatively, foreign nationals can come to study here: they'll pay twice as much as us to do so. Our higher education is subsidised. Likewise, we don't have to work in this country. Immigration is not a one-way system.

The number of companies that can sponsor a Tier 2 Visa is limited. Those that do have to pay £1000pa for each individual they sponsor. The individual themselves will have to pay >£600pa to subsidise the NHS for you and me.

We no longer have the Resident Labour Market Test - it was abolished because unemployment rates were extremely low - but most people who have passed the 2 year curfew to be allowed to take an employer to tribunal are in a job where their employers first had to prove the job couldn't be filled by local talent.

Perhaps the government should update the SOC code for software engineers to be higher. They determine the going rate to hire into these 'skilled occupation' roles.

devnullbrain··on Canada plans brain drain of H-1B visa holders, with no-job, no-worries permits
Not a problem, Canada spent a lot of energy ensuring that original value Canadians were forcibly integrated into European values.
devnullbrain··on LastPass users locked out due to MFA resets
>I don’t understand why not more IT professionals advocate this software.

I can have an offline password manager that just works, for free, and I don't have to worry about backdoors or hackers or incompetence.

devnullbrain··on Windows NT on 600MHz machine opens apps instantly. What happened?
I use Firefox containers with Temporary Containers (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/temporary-con...) so oh boy do I deal with this a lot. With some hacking I can stop the page at the right time to make it 'always open in X container' - there doesn't seem to be an obvious way to glob for different subdomains.
devnullbrain··on FTC sues Amazon over ‘deceptive’ Prime sign-up and cancellation process
I ran into this trying to cancel a free-trial a month ago. Or rather I thought I'd cancelled it and got charged.

Cancelling the 2nd time, they refunded me for the unused month. But maybe that was to do with the linked case rather than the goodness of their hearts.

devnullbrain··on Facebook almost acquired Waze, but we ended up with Google
>I’d love simple things like the ability for it to get me where I want N minutes early instead of exactly on time

It's really astonishing how many obvious things like this aren't implemented on either Google Maps or Waze. And for those that do exist, they feel like they've been designed by someone who has never driven outside of California and never used mixed-mode transport.

devnullbrain··on Submarine missing near Titanic used a $30 Logitech gamepad for steering
>It's a $30 controller

Although, for some reason, it's currently sold-out everywhere.

devnullbrain··on The Risks of Staying Put
Even after years of people spreading similar messages, being someone who 'knows' how to leave a job is a superpower. If you can get over the feeling that you're doing something immoral, it changes the context of any problem at work. But the first is the hardest.
devnullbrain··on Sennheiser HD 555 to HD 595 Mod
Don't buy open-backed headphones to use in a place with colleagues.
devnullbrain··on Gitless: A simple VCS built on top of Git
I've moved from Git to Mercurial and I hate it. It's just baby duck syndrome.
devnullbrain··on Ask HN: Why does Apple refuse to add window snapping to macOS?
>Maybe it's the influence of the fullscreen only, unitasking paradigm from phones and tablet computers, but it just doesn't make much sense to me on a desktop computer.

Completely the opposite. It's the influence of having computers powerful enough to have massive multitasking. Arranging windows like papers on a desk is easy when you have a handful of simple programs and a couple of browser windows - it's very different when you have 100 tabs with their own task-swapping logic in front of 20 other programs. You've already lost easy swapping so you might as well gain the extra pixels.

devnullbrain··on Did Reddit just destroy mobile browser access?
>I always see this argument and don’t get it.

Internet misanthropes contributing to the trend for people to lose friends and acquaintances as they age.

devnullbrain··on Did Reddit just destroy mobile browser access?
It's something that does work in other industries. If fantasy books are big you pay someone to write another fantasy book. If people start buying crossovers, you build a crossover.

The difference is that these are replaceable, consumable or temporary. With 'platforms', it's not enough to make something similar to something that someone likes, you have to make something that displaces something someone likes. How someone spends their leisure time is a limited, valuable resource.

devnullbrain··on Did Reddit just destroy mobile browser access?
>If the user follows a link to an article or video, there's a high chance it'll be the end of their reddit session, due to distraction or back button capture.

Ironically this is made worse by apps teaching users not to multitask. You can't open a tab to read later.

devnullbrain··on Did Reddit just destroy mobile browser access?
This sounds like a bug to me. For the past month I've been randomly logged out of new.reddit during busy times.

(old.reddit is noticeably less buggy and MASSIVELY faster...)

devnullbrain··on Reddit Strike Has Started
That's not how site-wide bans work
devnullbrain··on Reddit Strike Has Started
Once you found the comments it was but the comment link was/is marginalised in favour of the link itself, making it easy to miss that they're 'the point'. Even before new.reddit it was a common complaint that it's confusing to new users.

Obviously this is relative, it's a huge site! And there may even be value to gatekeeping users who can't figure it out.

devnullbrain··on The impact of the ‘long peace’ on modern military capabilities
>Ukraine wasn't a distinct state then.

That has no relevance.

devnullbrain··on Windows 11 calls a zip file a 'postcode file' in UK English
'isn't' means the same though
devnullbrain··on WFH – Watched from Home: Office 365 and workplace surveillance creep (2022)
I've successfully navigated dozens. Git gud?
devnullbrain··on Stop eliminating good candidates by asking them the wrong questions
It's still a bad foundation
devnullbrain··on Stop eliminating good candidates by asking them the wrong questions
He wants to be right. A job interview is not like an exam, it's like dating. An opportunity for two parties to decide if they can work together. Hiding who you really are to 'pass' is a bad foundation.

That's why I don't like the conclusion of the article. Anand didn't fail the interview because the criteria were wrong - the interviewer failed because they suck at being an engineering manager.

devnullbrain··on Most Bitcoin Inscriptions belong to a single person
Why not use the 2nd layer with another 1st layer? Because I won't benefit financially.
