devnullbrain··on Video game workers in North America now have an industry-wide union
The film industry does fine.

But, well yes. In many countries outside NA, unions are affiliated with left-wing parties.

devnullbrain··on Video game workers in North America now have an industry-wide union
I know people who called in sick on the release date of the Elden Ring DLC.
devnullbrain··on Video game workers in North America now have an industry-wide union
Insomniac faced job cuts just 4 months after releasing Spider-Man 2, a game that sold 11 million units and had a score of 97% on Opencritic at release. Epic Games also laid off staff last year. They made a game you may have heard of called 'Fortnite'. It's been rather successful.

But then so has most of the industry, which has experienced growth year-on-year.

A profit does not prevent layoffs and no individual can 10X themselves to safety. There is a huge power and incentive disparity between the people with the power to initiate layoffs and the people who get laid off. There's a way to shrink the gap, but it means accepting you have more in common with your colleagues than your shareholders, then communicating it collectively.

Oh dear, your timeline casts doubts on the ability for a Tesla to self-drive from LA to New York before the end of 2017

You can find plenty of examples just from The Beatles

Which one of the 4 preferred processes, not including the maligned git send-email, and infinite other accepted processes?

devnullbrain··on Global sales of combustion engine cars have peaked
Close, think more northern.
devnullbrain··on Global sales of combustion engine cars have peaked
That advice might not travel well: until recently I lived in a city where the bike rental service pulled out because too many were thrown in canals.
devnullbrain··on Global sales of combustion engine cars have peaked
This is also a big problem for multi-modal commuting. Do I really want to lock up my bike in a location that screams 'the owner won't be back for 9 hours', knowing police won't investigate bike theft?
devnullbrain··on How the U.K. broke its own economy
We have a broken mentality. In the US, they're temporarily embarrassed millionaires. Here, we're temporarily embarrassed landlords. The only ambition that's socially acceptable is a mortgage.
devnullbrain··on How the U.K. broke its own economy
I attribute much of our malaise to it being a long time since anything was done on 'economic grounds'. I'd love for us to have a fraction of the desire for capitalist principles that former communist countries have.
devnullbrain··on How the U.K. broke its own economy
There's not one green belt. There are a number of green belts, typically constricting our biggest economic centres, but the spaces between allow development.

This leads to situations like Oxford where people working in the university that gave the city its current fame can't afford to live in it. Instead they live in suburban towns outside of Oxford's green belt and commute in - through it. Ironically, there is now an incentive for the same number of people to sprawl over a larger area, requiring more railways, roads and parking. Many locals in Oxford's new sprawl expect a non-existent greenbelt to protect their areas and are left disappointed.

The real rub is that England lacks Scotland's right to roam. So protecting all this green land doesn't even give us the right to walk in it. Only to gaze from a passing window.

devnullbrain··on How the U.K. broke its own economy
You can't find a principled stance for a naturalistic fallacy.
devnullbrain··on How the U.K. broke its own economy
This is about the UK. We're now less than 5 years away from when every new car will have a battery. In 10, none of them will have an engine.
devnullbrain··on How the U.K. broke its own economy
Most electricity use is not required to be available on demand, there is a high, constant level of demand and the occassions where there is enough wind to exceed demand are rare enough to generate headlines. World Cup final kettles are the exception, not the rule.
devnullbrain··on James Harrison, whose blood donations saved >2M babies, has died
There are lower hanging fruit. Last time I tried to give blood in the UK involved waiting 2 months for an appointment and a 3-hour round-trip. They turned me away for a medical reason that was mentioned on the application form.

So I drove home: the NHS are more strict than the DVLA.

devnullbrain··on How Flash games shaped the video game industry (2020)
As someone who's worked at a company using Mercurial, the wild fire was that everyone was begging to get onto something better and less opinionated.
devnullbrain··on New maps of the chaotic space-time inside black holes
Photos as the only evidence of existence are a very convenient way of claming the nonexistence of something that reflects zero light. The baby-out-with-the-bathwater is that it also means there's no proof for anything outside the visible range of light, that's too small to show up on a CCD, or that predates the camera. Or you.
devnullbrain··on New maps of the chaotic space-time inside black holes
That definition requires a higher standard of proof than a Nobel prize committee.
devnullbrain··on The Ren'Py Visual Novel Engine
Text-heavy. JRPGs love to include 20 minutes of reading where an errant click means you miss a line, forever.
devnullbrain··on The Ren'Py Visual Novel Engine
>proper backlogs

Something noticeably missing from almost every other type of text-heavy game which perhaps wouldn't be if games developers were less snobbish about where they draw inspiration from.

On the other hand, writers of games with metatextual stories benefit from their target audience not knowing how well-trod the ground is.

devnullbrain··on You're not a senior engineer until you've worked on a legacy project (2023)
I've seen changes like this drag out over a year because the product had so many permutations that thoroughly testing any change was an exercise in futility. I've also seen changes like this fail to happen just due to a lack of cultural desire to make things happen.

The first one is more forgivable - sometimes that's just the problem space. But neither of them are conducive to fulfilling working environments.
