devtul··on Prince Philip has died
We should have a designated shit talker on everyone's wake. Someone who only purpose is to bring every bad word said, bad deeds, remember the unreturned books or any item.
devtul··on Ask HN: What tech job would let me get away with the least real work possible?
I know a UX/UI guy that worked for two big canadian banks at the same time. He was moving to Bank B, and did it for three months, just enough to lock in his annual bonus on Bank A. Oh, and he was praised in Bank A for his work in this period.
devtul··on Ask HN: I've realized I'm a bad software engineer and I'm over 30, what's next?
There's this myth that the PM must have knowledge in the field. The best PM I've ever worked with never touched code.
devtul··on Transiting the Suez Canal in a Private Sailboat (2003)
Funny enough in my country we have rules or laws "For the English to see", that exists only to look good but never really enforced.
devtul··on Phones and apps reduce your ability to focus even when they don’t distract you
A friend told me a new hire spent weeks drawing diagrams on the board and explaining to coworkers how X feature should work, after two months of zero commits he was let go.

A perfect example of a -2 X 5, zero work done but great presentation, now the guy is infamous in our circle and no one would recommend him to be hired anywhere.

devtul··on What I learned in two years of moving government forms online (2018)
> Dogs (can this be a drop down as well from 0-9)

Ooh boy, I wonder how long the drop down for cats would be.

devtul··on Show HN: Sorted CSS Colors – Sort the named CSS colors in a nice way
Is there any website that generates a color pallet along an example like X color for bg and Y for font and so on?

It is cool to get 5 matching colors but I'm a dope for design, so I have no idea how to work with that.

devtul··on Encountering Thomas Sowell
No matter how polite and sophisticated the criticism is, ideologues will always finds epithets and labels to try and delegitimize critics.
devtul··on Encountering Thomas Sowell
It turns out that some genocidal ideologies are too hard to let go, we managed with Nazism pretty well but Marxism is taking some time. Cambodia under Pol Pot should have been enough.
devtul··on Our app was banned because the button says “Report User” and not just “Report”
How long until we have to validate our code against a list of banned terms, like "master" or any new truly egregiously offensive terms of the day, before we are able to host our code or binaries on a third-party service?
devtul··on A follow up to Coinbase being a mission focused company
Let's say you don't even have a new job lined up but you feel capable enough to switch jobs, why turn down a severance like that. Free money.
devtul··on A follow up to Coinbase being a mission focused company
This idea of "everything is political" is why the discourse went to shit, now nobody can catch a break from politics, and if you had enough and don't want to take part then you instantly gets attacked for "supporting the status quo".

I prefer to not be lectured on political issues by my orange juice brand. Their mission should be to sell high quality orange juice and make a profit.

devtul··on Spotify Employees Demanding Direct Editorial Oversight over Joe Rogan Podcasts
It's baffling how a group of random people can assert so much pressure. Millions consume Joe's podcast, but somehow a dozen(?) of anonymous people inside Spotify believe they know what is good for everybody.
devtul··on Spotify Employees Demanding Direct Editorial Oversight over Joe Rogan Podcasts
It's possible to listen to someone without believing everything that comes out of his/her mouth and doing whatever that person says.
devtul··on Being OK with not being extraordinary
Curiously enough Scott Adams(Dilbert creator) talks a lot about what he call the "talent stack", which is what we are discussing here.

If you have a combination of skills that have synergy then you can have great results.

devtul··on Moving from YouTube to PeerTube
>different/wrong/naïve political ideology

Folks with this "naive" political ideology are shooting at people and kicking peoples head on the streets. Many innocent have died in the riots, much more have lost their business to looting.

I don't see conservatives having a hard time condemning the pizza place shooter or any other similar act, but I see a lot of leftists rationalism and even denying altogether the bad actions of their bad people. They even cheer their bad actors on.

devtul··on Moving from YouTube to PeerTube
I love how your comment is grayed out with a child comment saying they never heard rhetoric like that in their leftist circles.

At this point I can only assume ill intent, since we are bombarded daily with rhetoric likening any action by the POTUS and his admin to something nazist.

devtul··on Trump says he is considering pardon for Edward Snowden
> <Person I despise> does something I like > No! It doesn't matter, his motives must have been terrible.

I will never understand this kind of reaction, when you get so emotional about something that all pragmatism goes out the window.

devtul··on Independence, autonomy, and too many small teams
My understanding about Agile is planning ahead for the next step instead of planning the whole project before starting and then hoping all your assumptions turns out true.

The product owner will create and prioritize the stories in the backlog(plan), the team will discuss and break down a story into actionable and weighted tasks(more planning), then they will fit those tasks into the sprint based on their previous performance(even more planning!)

devtul··on Hack of 251 Law Enforcement Websites Exposes Personal Data of 700k Cops
When you say personal data, what do you include in that specifically?
devtul··on São Paulo Labor Judge Rules Uber Must Pay Full Employee Benefits to Drivers
Drivers are not bound in any way to Uber, Uber won't send slave hunters if they leave the app.

If people continue to drive for Uber, doesn't that mean the app is still a net positive for them, or do you believe people would pay to work?

Your comment is a great example of what the parent comment is saying, the belief that people are too damn dumb and they need protection.

devtul··on São Paulo Labor Judge Rules Uber Must Pay Full Employee Benefits to Drivers
If you think it only makes sense to hold conservative values if you are rich, it only means you don't know what you are talking about.
devtul··on Mathematicians urge colleagues to boycott police work in wake of killings
Are you saying that the visible presence of the police won't stop any type of crime, or just specifically your spousal abuse example?
devtul··on Mathematicians urge colleagues to boycott police work in wake of killings
duuuuude chillax, if police stop reporting crime, crime will naturally disappear.
devtul··on Most employees of NYT won’t be required back in physical offices until 2021
There is no avoiding personal responsibility, we give power to bureaucrats to run some stuff for us but you can't solely rely on their judgment. Unless we are talking about the helpless and inept in our society, then I agree with you.
devtul··on Was Modern Art Really a CIA Psy-Op?
Is modern K-pop a South Korea gov psy-op?
devtul··on Fremont Tesla workers tested positive for coronavirus days after plant reopened
"Alameda County's Tesla to resume operations despite 0.15% infected"

Here is a more precise but still infuriating headline.

devtul··on Anti-racism sites hit by wave of cyber-attacks
In one side we have plenty of long running antifa twitter accounts pushing for violence, on the other we have bogaloo meme pages of people who appose gov abusing their 2A rights.

But now we are supposed to believe antifa and BLM has nothing to do with the death and destruction in the riots. The push for this propaganda is everywhere and it looks like the scapegoat will be the bogaloo meme pages.

devtul··on Anti-racism sites hit by wave of cyber-attacks
Same goes for the other hypothesis. People are talking out of their asses, can't you see?
devtul··on Twitter hides Donald Trump tweet for “glorifying violence”
Is the POTUS clearly inciting violence or is it another instance of people having a wild interpretation of what he said? I'm so tired of this dynamic that I don't even bother anymore.
