dosshell··on Quake on an FPGA (MRISC32 CPU) [video]
Talking about fullstack.

How far away is network support?

Like hosting bitsnbites.eu on it?

If I don't mistaken he is also the original author of GLFW.
dosshell··on Ask HN: What are your favorite tools?
Emacs OR vim?

Wait, you can use both?

This can't be true... How...

Ok. Now i finally have the opportunit:

I would appreciate your thoughts of pros and cons with them?

dosshell··on Ask HN: What are your favorite tools?
fzf is my newest addition. A fuzzyfinder for your commandline.

(Yes, I know I'm late to the party).

Search after files, history or navigate directories.

dosshell··on Normal Operating Sounds
Interesting, that does not sound efficient? How much more efficient than using electrical heating directly instead?

0F ? That can't be right?

My Mitsubishi gives heat to around -31F (MSZ-RW Sumo)

dosshell··on Running Windows 98 in the Browser
Oh, there are more OSes one can use at the parent page:

My highlights:

- First version of Windows (1.01)

- SerenityOS <3

- and even ReactOS

dosshell··on Does Go Have Subtyping?
How long list do you want?

Pretty much all successful indie games use typed languages. Of course, there is a mix with untyped scripts in there too. But many only depends on typed languages.

dosshell··on Ask HN: Is there a data loss bug lurking in MS365 backup solutions?
Does someone know if rclone also can fail silently when syncing onedrive? [0]

From my experience it doesn't but onedrive provides, sometimes, filesizes that are wrong, so checking file integrity is a tiny bit more of a pain.

dosshell··on Ask HN: What are your favorite profiling tools in your language of choice?
Does someone knows of a software that can estimate pipeline flushes, execution unit saturation, memory bandwidth and latency limits etc. for a given cpu?

Like: simulate a.out

And it would give me a report for each line of code and tell me everything that happened on that line. Was it a cache miss? False sharing? Etc.

I would pay a lot for that software.

dosshell··on 40 years ago yesterday Air Canada Flight 143 ran out of fuel mid-flight
How much was the metric system used in Canada when the crew was in School?

I mean, 1.7 kg / l is not just wrong, it is obvious wrong. Fuel and oil does not sink to the bottom of the ocean.

dosshell··on Egregoria: 3D City Builder without a grid
What are your thoughts about AI generated 3D assets that many, now startups, promise to sell to indie developers?

For me, it sounds like city models such as cars and buildings will be one of the easiest models to generate (from what I have seen in papers).

As an indie dev myself I'm counting on that I will be able to buy most 3D content for a fraction of time/cost in a couple of years. And I plan my development around this and ignore art assets for now.

dosshell··on Imagination GPUs now support OpenGL 4.6
And webgpu.

Sure, the implementations today are thin layers over D3D12, Vulkan and Mantel. But it is a proper API, cross platform and without the implementation overhead.

Next time I need to draw some graphics I will definitely use WebGPU instead of OpenGL or Vulkan.

PS. Don't let the name fool you. It is a proper render API, Mozilla has written their implementation in rust and Google in C++.

Would not be surprised if WebGPU do get native support by the drivers in the future.

dosshell··on Data-Oriented Design (2018)
You do realize that DoD has nothing to do with data-driven, right?

Data oriented design is about structure the data in regard of how it is processed and the hardware. This is opposite of object oriented design which models the data around your mental model.

For example in DoD you could design a map with keys in one array together and one array of values. This would make it much faster to iterate over keys while searching because of cache memory.

While in object oriented you would store an array of pairs.

Both approaches can use data-driven.

Edit: would -> could

dosshell··on Data-Oriented Design (2018)
One key concept when I use DoD is to not abstract away the data. Less is more.

But when quickly reading the intro text, I found it doing the opposite, it talks too much and abstracts away the key concepts. Only me who found it a bit ironic of not drinking the wine?

dosshell··on Brain images just got 64 million times sharper
Well, do you think a 4 Megapixel camera sensor has 2x resolution compared to a 2 MP?

If no, I agree with you, but if it indeed does... Why should we not compare resolution in the higest dimension here too? We already have a term for linear resolution, voxel size.

(But yes. I agree with your clickbait argument here. Could have been better to use voxel size in the heading)

dosshell··on Ask HN: What are you working on to become a better programmer?
Is APL an abbreviation for "A Programming Language" too? Do you have a repo to checkout?

It sounds to me as a perfect language for SIMD?

dosshell··on Why Finland Selected the F-35A (2021)
Exactly, sorry if I did not use the right word (not native english speaker). I did not know that "keep" was so binary. With keep stealth ability I meant that it may not keep all it's properties to the same degree as today and some of them can decay. For example as you mention about the distance for detection from a single radar in normal flight.
dosshell··on Why Finland Selected the F-35A (2021)
You make it sound as stealth is a boolean value. Stealth is not that easy. It depends on many factors. Stealth from whom, when, systems, where, and how much.

There is a probability (only indirect rumors) that F-35 can already be detected in some situations on some systems (global eye?) and there is definitely no guarantee that F-35 will keep it's stealth ability in the future.

dosshell··on Wine 8.0
How reliable is it? Have you encountered any tests that did not have the same result as on real Windows?
dosshell··on Pandoc 3.0
Does that mean that you are adding support for latex etc?

this is awesome, thank you for your work.

dosshell··on Tesla driver falls asleep – Autopilot ignores police and continues driving
> People will work out how to trick the visual monitoring too.

I believe you are right. The DMS (Driver Montering System) needs to work on so many outliers: damaged face, porslin eye, niqab and other health related issues. It is more important that the system let these people be able to drive the car than it is to stop abuse.

Many car manufacturers test the DMS alot regarding of how to trick them when they select the supplier but so far they don't want to pay for better protection (to my knowledge). (Well. they don't want to pay for anything to be honest but still have all the features)

I believe there will be a cat and mouse situation for a while until it get to expensive to catch them or to inconvenient/costly/looking stupid for the driver to trick the system.

But I am sure it is harder to trick DMS system than Teslas system today. And harder means fewer people will do it.

disclaimer: one of many engineers working with this.

(It is btw one of the most interesting problems I have encountered. Just think for a second of all engineering expertise you need: biological, optics, electronics, medecin, high performance computing in C and assembly (you need to get it to run on a "toaster") , AI (a lot), etc. etc. Just collecting ground truth of drowsiness is a tricky topic by it self... if someone here has a boring job, I highly recommend to think about this field)

dosshell··on The only way of being anonymous in Sweden is illegal?
Yes, you need to sign in (the account is free).
dosshell··on The only way of being anonymous in Sweden is illegal?
Do you have a source for this?

There are several sites (upplysning.se for example) that show full length of the personal ID. How does that work if it is not public information?

dosshell··on Svante Pääbo awarded Nobel Prize for studies of extinct human ancestors
Addon: I do not promote that Malone get Nobel price (just first google hit). What I meant to ask was what Karinó did that is special related to all other work in this field.

dosshell··on Turns are better than radians
I was taught that Eulers formula defined complex exponents?

If we used turns for cos and sin we could redefine what e^ix means so it works without radians. From the other answer I guess this is completely wrong...

(I do understand it is nuts to redefine, i'm just interested as a theoretical thought)

Now, how is Eulers formula is deduced? How did we figure out what e^ix means?

dosshell··on Ask HN: Why Adobe still can’t figure out Flash on WASM?
Ah, I understand. thanks for the clarification :)

(Unity do have animations tools for artists (it is partly made for artists) but not so good for vector graphics and not close to flash, and definitely not back then.)

dosshell··on Ask HN: Why Adobe still can’t figure out Flash on WASM?
This is outside my expertise but i remember doing svg animations, web gl animations and unity animations roughly ~10 years ago. But maybe that was a few years to late or not applicable to your case?

But an app with vector animations should have been doable (not to hard in theory) if you could have found the investment for it, right?

dosshell··on Show HN: Low-cost backup to S3 Glacier Deep Archive
I would also like to mention restic where rclone can act as a backend but you get a very nice frontend for backup
