dosshell··on Mullvad is now available on Amazon
My impression of Fredrik and Daniel is that they are passionated about the technology - not making a startup exit. If they did an exit, which i don't think they do, it would probably be because they want to go back to a smaller company again. They would just start a new smaler vpn service after they got paid.

disclaimer: I'm a random dude on the internet that thinks he know more than he does.

dosshell··on Mullvad is now available on Amazon
This got me thinking...

The government do get a limit number of potential users. Can this together with fingerprints, ping latency(?) etc. be used together with amazon info to narrow down the vpn user (in theory) or is that impossible?

For example, if mullvad only had 5 users in separate continents, could one measure the latency and crossreference with a amazon buy history to identify the vpn user?

dosshell··on Wails: Build cross-platform applications using Go
It states you can use native components and that it uses webkit. How does this work? I thought native components meant using the OS gui like Win32/MFC etc. How does this work through webkit? Does webkit have Win32 bindings?

dosshell··on Show HN: We launched a new web browser
>> It is the basis for Internet consumption, it shouldn't be in the hands of a single company.

Somehow I agree with you but this is a slippery path.

Should we do the same with x86 ISA?

Should we do the same with Windows?

YouTube?

Where should we draw the line?

dosshell··on Show HN: We launched a new web browser
26 days a go this topped HN:

SerenityOS Browser now passes the Acid3 test (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30853392)

That is a new browser from scratch, (well actually, it is a full OS from scratch). I got the impression this is developed by very few persons.

So to answer your rhetorical questions:

Q: who could?

A: Andreas Kling, Linus Groh and Sam Atkins

Q: why?

A: Because they want to use it. "This is a system by us, for us, based on the things we like."

dosshell··on WireGuard multihop available in the Mullvad app
I don't recall why, it was so long time ago. But my best guess is that they wanted to guarantee that they know what has been booted?
dosshell··on WireGuard multihop available in the Mullvad app
spot on, but they used coffee to make a unique pattern.
dosshell··on WireGuard multihop available in the Mullvad app
10 years ago i was working at in a shared office where companies could hire a room. We all had a common lunch place and shared microwaves.

There I met two security nerds. They never shutdown their computers and if it happened, they did a full format and reinstalled the os - because if security.

They spoke with passion about security fixes they made in the vpn client that no other had.

They got many requests regularly from others that they should add there server as an endpoint - and they sad always no. All endpoints must be 100% secure by their knowledge. Never trust anyone.

If they had to leave a laptop they used some old coffee paper trick so that one could not open the lid without visible marks.

I was super impressed by them and have never met any like them. I guess they have grown out of their tiny office now, Mullvad.

dosshell··on Show HN: How to compile C/C++ for WASM, pure Clang, no libs, no framework
directly when reading this code I cannot help myself but to get into review-mode. It is an awesome example, which i will probably use myself one day.

However...

Gray is not the average of RGB, it is usally approximated with `Y = 0.299 R + 0.587 G + 0.114 B`.

dosshell··on Folly: An open-source C++ library developed and used at Facebook
>> And even that information is empty bromides about how it's "designed with practicality and efficiency in mind". Hmm, I prefer my software to be impractical and inefficient...

the opposite from practical is general. for example is std not practical but general. Its api is not optimized for 95% of the use cases but rather so that everything is possible and equaly verbose.

the opposite of efficient can for example be trade of for readability, portability and cost (as in development time).

For me as a possible user of the lib i found this information critical. I write always similar info in the readme for my libraries.

dosshell··on TinyVG: A challenger to the throne of vector graphics
I have heard very good words about the eps format from a vector-format nerd (he reads file format specifikation books because its fun). I would love to here more opinions about eps from other developers.

How does eps really compare with the other formats mentioned above?

nitpicking:

actually, for foveated rendering knowing exactly where the person is looking is not good enough, you need to know where the person will be looking after the frame is rendered.

I'm also very hyped about foveated rendering for ultra wide monitors.

dosshell··on So You Want to Rust the Linux Kernel?
To answer the first paragraph (as I understand it, i'm no expert here):

Parsing! it is faster to parse and probably uses less memory too. This is not only important for compile time but also for editors with code suggestions.

C has a relative long compile time. If you look at golang, which has a goal of a fast compile time, you will see similar syntax.

PS.

Note that Ken is one of the fathers of both C and golang.

dosshell··on What will programming look like in 2020? (2012)
Zig is a better C in many ways. Memory handling, error handling, security, but most importantly it can be used together with C. No need to port your code base just swap to zig and continue. Of course now you have a code base in zig and C... :/
dosshell··on Tests show all driver assist systems can be fooled
The truth is that some car manufacturers actually request it to be somewhat fool proof, but very few.

It costs hardware to run and cost to develop/test, and car manufacturing is all about price.

But also:

Today the algorithm knows the 3D geometry of your head, and knows that it does not makes sense with a flat face. But it is more important to get it to work good on everyone than to catch foolers.

dosshell··on Apple to scan iPhones for child sex abuse images
Thats not how it works. The fingerprints/hashes do not need be exactly the same. Just close enough. The fingerprint/hash is designed to not change much if the pictures are similar.

Simplified: If you draw a circle and i draw a circle, their fingerprints will be closer then if I would have drawn a rectangle.

dosshell··on It’s not a self-driving car unless you can sleep in it
I agree that it can be hazardous. But I would like to add that level 3 cars have driver monitoring making sure that the driver is looking at the road. Much better than nothing!

Still, the handover in some of the car brands I have tested are really dangerous - silently hands over to the driver without any notifications.

LGPL is not GPL. You are for example allowed to dynamic link from proprietary code to LGPL libraries. This is not the case with GPL shared libraries. You should take look at the LGPL license agreement and then see how the code is used.
