e1gen-v··on Show HN: Marmot – Single-binary data catalog (no Kafka, no Elasticsearch)
Oh I see it uses open lineage. I thought it was able to handle discovery
e1gen-v··on Show HN: Marmot – Single-binary data catalog (no Kafka, no Elasticsearch)
How are you able to see a datasets lineage across storage types. For example how are you able to see that an s3 buckets files are the ancestor of some table in Postgres?
e1gen-v··on Show HN: Boing
If you manage to push it all the way down directly in the middle it boings forever
e1gen-v··on Show HN: Dank-AI – Ship production AI agents 10x faster
They have a stat on there that says 98% of developers use JavaScript.

e1gen-v··on Show HN: A store that generates products from anything you type in search
This idea reminds me of the classic video by google called the selfish ledger where they are able to create products based off of people’s direct interested and at the same time are able to influence society as a whole

e1gen-v··on How to build vector tiles from scratch
Yes but I actually didn’t end up building any of the tile logic in python. I used PostGIS and Postgres. Each query is like 25 lines and supports polys and lines out the box.

e1gen-v··on How to build vector tiles from scratch
I actually did this at work! Set up a fast api with a tile server endpoint and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.
e1gen-v··on Modern CI is too complex and misdirected (2021)
Pulumi doesn’t have a framework for general CICD but from my experience it shifts the complexity out of the bash/yaml scripts and allows me to express it in python and the I can run unit tests and easily run it locally. Our use case is rather simple though, just a fast api backend and front on ECS.
e1gen-v··on Modern CI is too complex and misdirected (2021)
I’ve been using Pulumi automation in our CI and it’s been really nice. There’s definitely a learning curve with the asynchronous Outputs but it’s really nice for building docker containers and separating pieces of my infra that may have different deployment needs.
e1gen-v··on Docker container for running Claude Code in "dangerously skip permissions" mode
Claude condom is hilarious!
e1gen-v··on Obsidian Bases
Slightly off topic but why is everyone switching to these really wide fonts?
e1gen-v··on Design patterns you should unlearn in Python
I do this in fast api and then pass get_whatever as a dependency to an endpoint

e1gen-v··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (July 2025)
I just tried it and I really like it! Do you think it’s gonna stay free?
e1gen-v··on New haptic patch transmits complexity of touch to the skin
I worked in this lab this summer! Not on this project, but doing various software tasks. Was a great time.
e1gen-v··on Extreme, Extreme! The literature of laughing gas. (2014)
That was such an amazing description!
e1gen-v··on Stephen King leaves X, describing atmosphere as 'too toxic'
After deleting my instagram and Snapchat accounts I’ve realized that life isn’t too shabby. :)
e1gen-v··on Procrastination and the fear of not being good enough
Do you actually enjoy the process of writing online?

Because for me I’ve realized there’s a difference between enjoying actually doing a hobby versus just fantasizing about what it would be like to be good at it.

Maybe that’s not what you’re experiencing, but I’ve tried to get into hobbies and have run into the feeling you describe. Eventually I would drop the hobby because I just didn’t enjoy doing it.

Ps congrats on writing online :)

e1gen-v··on NVLM: Open Frontier-Class Multimodal LLMs
Has anyone figured out how to do “visual” chunking for rag? I’m curious how this would be used in place of an OCR service.
e1gen-v··on Ask HN: How did you improve your ability to do deep work?
One thing for me that works really well is Pomodoro timer, I do 15 minutes work 5 minutes rest. During work sessions I put my phone in the other room so it’s not distracting me with notifications. After a few flow cycles I just get zoned in and the flow state hits.

If you’re on Mac I really like this app: https://www.flow.app/

e1gen-v··on Foraging for America's Forgotten Fruit
Are you thinking of kumquats?
e1gen-v··on Why use metaphors in conflicts? Because understanding is remembering in disguise (2009)
I like how you used an analogy of a scale model to explain your understanding of why analogies are useful in communication
e1gen-v··on Cough or sneeze? How the brain knows what to unleash
i sometimes get really bad bouts of chronic bronchitis for 3 weeks on end. There’s no silver bullet but I really like Vic’s vapor rub, a humidifier, and ricola cough drops. To sleep, I usually stack 2/3 pillows so my nose drains properly. When I wake up in the middle of the night hacking, I sit in the shower with a ton of steam.
e1gen-v··on KLEE Symbolic Execution Engine
I used this in my software testing class. It was really cool! Although interfacing with LLVM was not very fun, I feel like I could’ve spent a lot more time learning the innards of this tool instead of fighting with llvm and C++.
e1gen-v··on Mathematicians prove Hawking wrong about the most extreme black holes
If you have the time maybe look towards a community college and take a modern mechanics class! I took one in undergrad and it gives you insight into special relativity and basic quantum. Though I don’t remember a lot of it, it was really exciting to be able to practice the math and be able to ask the professor my questions.

I feel like with these topics you need to dive into the details to gain a strong understanding but then you only realize how much there is to learn.
