ece··on Is my blue your blue?
I got hue 175 twice, but bluer than 66% of the population once and 59% the second time.
ece··on US Supreme Court reviews police use of cell location data
Only two of these companies actually needs your location data to function, it's Uber and Lyft. There's a reasonable case telcos might also need the data for network purposes, but cell tower data isn't going to be as accurate as GPS. It's safe to say everyone else is basically collecting data for serving ads even if they say otherwise.

The opposite of dragnet surveillance, which is what flock and geofencing warrants are: data aggregated and shared without the consent of the user, is data collection minimization even when done for security or apps.

ece··on Sergey Brin Confronted Gavin Newsom
Not only this, but a person with this much wealth cannot possibly consume enough to pay their fair share in taxes. They've already used all the loopholes to avoid income taxes which aren't even progressive for billionaires as mentioned by Buffet.
ece··on Sergey Brin Confronted Gavin Newsom
The billionaire mind virus might be contagious.
ece··on Sergey Brin Confronted Gavin Newsom
Apparently they didn't go very far.
ece··on Making RAM at Home [video]
I'm all for safer and less error prone processes, if there is a conductive ink safe for home use, just sell me a 3D printer that does it.
ece··on Making RAM at Home [video]
I visited a pcb making factory once. Left with an appreciation for the amount of work needed for 80-layer pcbs, and knowing I would not want to deal with making them myself.
ece··on John Ternus to become Apple CEO
The problem with Apple software is they stop competition where it makes them money through lock-in. Apple ARM CPUs are great, but the GPUs do leave things to be desired, and they stop competition there too on their platforms.
ece··on The RAM shortage could last years
If only there were privacy laws and working antitrust laws. There could also be a law straight up banning chat uses of llms and only allow agentic uses with human review. Would solve a lot of problems for lawmakers worried about AI I think.
ece··on The RAM shortage could last years
The FOMO is strong, but can also indicate a bubble. Demand is from circular deals and APIs are being locked down already.
ece··on The RAM shortage could last years
OpenAI does have projections for making money with ads that would make Google and Meta blush.
ece··on Bluesky has been dealing with a DDoS attack for nearly a full day
Client side challenges would be fine when a DDoS is actually happening, but they're basically targeting certain platforms more than others right now. Not actually helping in keeping a site secure in that case and hurting user experience.
ece··on God Sleeps in the Minerals
For a while I thought what could there be to see in the petrified national forest. It's mineralized trees (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petrified_wood), and there were enough different minerals in the area to make different colors. Definitely worth a visit.
ece··on Bitcoin miners are losing on every coin produced as difficulty drops
Is there a SQQQ for BTC?
ece··on Has Mythos just broken the deal that kept the internet safe?
I am talking about red teams being able to use the model for 90 days before everyone has access, since it's the model that's finding vulnerabilities.
ece··on Has Mythos just broken the deal that kept the internet safe?
Standard disclosure rules should apply, give security stake holders 90-days of advance access, then release the model.
ece··on DRAM has a design flaw from 1966. I bypassed it [video]
Would be cool to see the performance difference for llama2.c or see it work for gddr on gpus too with nanogpt, though I guess the latter might or might not be possible because of architecture differences.
ece··on Veracrypt project update
If bitlocker wasn't crippled[1] on the home versions of Windows, this would be a non-issue. I hope a solution is found, even if it's 3rd party signing that works like the present solution.

ece··on The team behind a pro-Iran, Lego-themed viral-video campaign
The 2nd paragraph of the story states numerous techniques of propaganda the videos contain and several examples.
ece··on Anthropic is burning more and more dev goodwill
In all honesty you'd have to be living under a fucking rock the last 10 years to think these APIs wouldn't be locked down to make more money for their owners. Who is surprised? Not me running models on my spark cluster.
ece··on The team behind a pro-Iran, Lego-themed viral-video campaign
Puppet regime has competition. Now do Putin.
ece··on Apple approves driver that lets Nvidia eGPUs work with Arm Macs
Apple should update this page for ARM macs, now runs tinygrad on eGPUs: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102363
ece··on The Cathedral, the Bazaar, and the Winchester Mystery House
The movie Winchester, book from a local author (https://www.losaltosonline.com/community/santa-clara-valley-...) and going to the tour itself makes me wonder if Sarah Winchester invites the controversy over why she built the house. What would a rich woman during her time do for fame that outlasts her? Chase crazy architecture ideas if you liked architecture maybe. Make it so the home becomes a public place.

The Winchester house a developer builds is only worth something if it delivers tangible value. The market clearly thinks one way, but plenty of people are still skeptical. The cathedral and bazaar delivered value in different ways, and the need came before the solution.

ece··on Category Theory Illustrated – Types
Reminded me of this veritasium video: https://youtu.be/_cr46G2K5Fo?si=0MfbE8c99sUckT03
ece··on What category theory teaches us about dataframes
The second last link should be https://www.vldb.org/pvldb/vol13/p2033-petersohn.pdf paper probably.
ece··on Google adds 24-hour wait and mandatory reboot to Android sideloading flow
There should be one screen each for self signing individual apps and it's updates, and another one for adding a public app store key to allow verifying apps and updates from that key. That would be factual and not scary. Yes, the question should be asked with the play store too.

People should by default not trust a developer or store or OS for that matter that is scaring you into doing something.

ece··on What makes Intel Optane stand out (2023)
10x endurance and 10x latency reduction, for 10x the price. It was closer to 5x the price with the closeout firesale after it was killed.
ece··on What makes Intel Optane stand out (2023)
Fabs are expensive and all, but maybe running a right-sized fab could have still been profitable at making optane for low-latency work that it was so good at. Even moreso with RAM prices as they are.
ece··on Jeff Bezos wants Washington Post’s newsroom budget halved, productivity doubled
He should've chosen to not make editorial decisions, and help with finding other revenue sources. Instead he lost revenue by making editorial decisions, and shows no signs of learning anything. He's lost more in market value at this point than yearly profit with his current strategy, which he can change anytime.
ece··on Jeff Bezos wants Washington Post’s newsroom budget halved, productivity doubled
But they did switch to a pretty good online presence, the NYT did games, others could try to go after classifieds or other online pastimes without neutering the news room like Bezos has done. Sure it takes investment, Bezos seems to have had no problems doing that with Amazon.
