ece··on GPT-5.2 derives a new result in theoretical physics
Everytime I see a RL startup, a data startup or even a startup focused on a specific vertical, I think this exact same thing about LLMs.

ece··on Age of Empires: 25 years of pathfinding problems with C++ [video]
I guess Rise of Nations was a different code base altogether since he didn't mention it. Floats are something every programmer learns about.
ece··on Let's compile Quake like it's 1997
VC++ 6 was made by the same company that made VS Code.
ece··on Flock CEO calls Deflock a “terrorist organization” (2025) [video]
Municipal cameras do exist for speeding, tolls, and maybe other road research. But Flock is the definition of let's get everyone in dragnet surveillance so we can pick on whoever we want, at least try.

Yes, they can take advantage of privacy violations, being able to misrepresent facts, and pointing to an infallible technology stack even though it is not.
ece··on Owning a $5M Data Center
It's pretty cool they're able to build this infrastructure from selling open hardware and software for $1k, and I suppose tinybox sales.
ece··on Flock CEO calls Deflock a “terrorist organization” (2025) [video]
You're talking about partial facts and misrepresentations at this point. You're also saying it yourself, facts aren't their primary concern, sure they can be convenient, anything can be made convenient if you're allowed to cherry pick. But the bigger problem is they also have no problems lying and making shit up. Not what I would call caring about facts.
ece··on LinkedIn checks for 2953 browser extensions
Cover your tracks from EFF doesn't seem to check extensions? Are there other fingerprint tests to use?
ece··on Flock CEO calls Deflock a “terrorist organization” (2025) [video]
I don't think fascists are that smart, they will go after those that get in the way and those who they perceive as weak. They are bullies who are cowards and all that.

Techno-fascist that leases cameras would like governments to pay him his cut of a "law and order" society. News at 11.
ece··on Steam Hardware: Launch timing and other FAQs
Your eye is just another input source, if you don't feel the controller lag from streaming games otherwise, you're probably not going to feel it here either. It's not like an additional round trip or anything, your eye is here and the joystick is here can be sent at the same time, and you get back the rendered frame in return.

As for peripheral vision, any gradation being smooth probably helps, but there might be more tricks to make it look normal. I'm reminded of how jpeg images and some sound codecs only store information that we can actually perceive.

ece··on Linux From Scratch ends SysVinit support
I've been using Gentoo for 20+ years, it hasn't changed much. I have changed different logger, cron, ntp, login and probably other daemons over time. Stability has gotten better over time, making me not switch to anything else.

ece··on Rentahuman – The Meatspace Layer for AI
You know, you don't have to build something just because you can.
ece··on Apple I Advertisement (1976)
Locking you into the software when you buy the hardware is still considered giving it away.
ece··on Stop using low DNS TTLs
I've never changed the default, Squarespace, Godaddy, Cloudflare, Porkbun, all have been an hour or so.
ece··on GOG: Linux "the next major frontier" for gaming as it works on a native client
Developer tools have always been pretty well supported on Linux, it seems like gaming is also getting there except for anti-cheat. Maybe productivity tools will follow.
ece··on Tesla is committing automotive suicide
TBH, Tesla lost the plot after master plan 2 (Roadster 2, Semi and Cybertruck are all fine examples), now it's just a farce. Another company I will be glad to not have in my life.
ece··on Vitamin D and Omega-3 have a larger effect on depression than antidepressants
Staying awake is an antidepressant, up to a limit.
ece··on Android’s desktop interface leaks
There are different vaccines from different manufacturers. Attestation from something like keybase should work just as well for banks or whatever.
ece··on Android’s desktop interface leaks
Root used to just mean knowing an admin password and rarely using it on desktop platforms for making local changes. It's changed definition for mobile if it now means just being able to run and auto-update apps from fdroid or run an app without the attestation of the company that supplies the OS, which in the worst cases takes away control completely from the user.

Mobile platforms and developers solely supporting their attestation should allow other forms of self attestation that the users want. I don't think I'm confused about anything, and I don't need to muddy the definition of security or root to argue having control over my data and apps on platforms I want to use.

ece··on Android’s desktop interface leaks
This level of security exists on open as well as closed platforms, the problem is the closed platforms not allowing you to do things that aren't giving your password away (like installing fdroid or using beeper easily). I just have a hard time believing this is superior in any way.
ece··on Android’s desktop interface leaks
Vastly superior security doesn't make you give up freedoms for security. But do tell me how successful the war against scams has been for the average user.
ece··on There's only one Woz, but we can all learn from him
I saw him at a meetup in the south bay years ago. Definitely kind spoken and generous in answering questions. It was a highlight for me after moving to the bay area.
ece··on Optimizing GPU Programs from Java Using Babylon and Hat
Maybe this and TornadoVM will lead to a native torch on the JVM. One can hope.
ece··on Google confirms 'high-friction' sideloading flow is coming to Android
Scams are the justification, F-Droid hasn't had any scam apps throughout it's existence, and it's not clear every functionality it currently has will be preserved with this change like auto-updating apps and easy installation of the store itself.

Google could let users add their own signing keys (like browsers allow), and it might be they will let students or power users do this, or they could do what F-Droid does in packaging FOSS apps without developers having to provide extra PII information. If they do neither of these things, it de facto means they're only after control at the expense of normal users.

ece··on Google confirms 'high-friction' sideloading flow is coming to Android
Cubasis and Blackmagic Camera are cross platform, not that "most people" would use these over whatever was preinstalled or the camera interface in their social app.
ece··on Google confirms 'high-friction' sideloading flow is coming to Android
If auto-updating apps stops working on fdroid, I'll be installing Graphene, Lineage or taking a shot at something like postmarket/ubuntu touch/plasma mobile. I've used Lineage as a daily driver before for a while, so I'll probably just go back to that and tell developers to support the platform I'm using. It doesn't rent seek on developers or users.
ece··on EmuDevz: A game about developing emulators
I'm a fan of robot odyssey.
