echoangle··on Blockchain intelligence firms link North Korea to $6.3B hack on Binance
Can’t you just immediately use them? The person getting caught will be some random person that took the bill, not the one bringing it into circulation.
echoangle··on 'Elite North Korean hackers' blamed for $6.3B Binance hack
Other question: why don’t they just forge currency? Surely with nation states resources you can create fake currency that easily fools most inspections? Is it that hard to launder cash? Or is the a red line and they are afraid of political measures?

There’s Superdollars but it doesn’t seem to be a really widespread problem so far, right?

echoangle··on [dead]
> Notable customers who run Claude Code on laptops include Binance, amongst thousands of others.

So is this the most plausible way that binance was hacked so far?

echoangle··on Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance
If a compromised laptop was the entry point and that allowed someone to steal 6 billion dollars, it’s not really the engineers fault, right?

You know that you can’t just judge an investment by past return, right? Would it be rational for a lotto player to tell you how great lotto is as an investment? Or people winning at the casino? Success doesn’t mean it was the rationally optimal decision.

> And decreasing, since BTC is dropping as we speak. Always a good idea to hedge a currency with the currency itsself

Depends on what you’re insuring, no? For theft, it actually makes senses, right? That way, you’re insuring a constant number of coins, no matter what the market is doing. If you’re insurance currency would tank during a bitcoin heist, you would lose the insurance effect.

> Eventually, possibly within my lifetime, a Big Mac meal is going to cost $50.

Is the problem the number or the concept?

Your salary should also go up so the only thing affected is the cash you hold. Would it be better if the currency would be version-bumped every 10 years and rescaled to remove the inflation?

echoangle··on NetBSD adds a new text editor called atto
> Above modern bindings are activated also when the name of nano's executable (or a symlink to it) starts with the letter "e".

Maybe stupid question but do you then need to run nano through the symlink to get the new bindings or is the existence of a symlink enough? Wouldn’t nano have to check every directory for a symlink to itself to do that? There’s no way to get all symlinks for a specific file without checking the whole file system, right?

I mean as someone managing a state. If there’s a guaranteed way to make money by holding your currency, you’re not really incentivized to invest your money in semi-risky endeavors. Why would I fund a company to make me some single digit returns if I can just hold the money? If the central bank would actively enforce a deflationary currency, nobody would invest anymore.

So 3% yearly Inflation? The target is 2% so not too bad. You don’t want your actual currency to gain value just by waiting.
echoangle··on Cuba is skipping its November 1, 2026 clock change and staying on DST until 2027
Sure, but hasn’t that been the case for all the time since DST was introduced? The original comment to me sounded like DST is responsible for people being in a worse mental state now than a few years ago.
echoangle··on Cuba is skipping its November 1, 2026 clock change and staying on DST until 2027
Well most people haven't existed for 60 years. Where I'm from, DST was introduced 110 years ago and people still complain. When will the worsening mental state reach equilibrium? Or is there maybe a chance that the worsening mental state isn't due to DST?
echoangle··on Cuba is skipping its November 1, 2026 clock change and staying on DST until 2027
> and worsening mental state

How would something that has been in effect for at least 60 years still lead to a worsening mental state over time?

echoangle··on Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain
With a car, you should always drive at a speed so you can stop in the distance you can see and predict as the driver. With a train, you can’t really do that if you don’t want to go walking speed around every bend in the track. So a high speed train is always operating in a state where it needs external sources to tell it if the way is clear.
echoangle··on Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking
If it’s fair use, the license doesn’t matter.
echoangle··on Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking
Couldn't the adult file download just as well be used to train a model that rejects adult uploads to roblox? I don't see the outrage.
echoangle··on Prisoner loses challenge to an Australian state’s ban on inmates eating Vegemite
Which is a pretty weird claim because there’s no nutrient that only occurs in port and vegemite. Or what are all the Muslims around the world eating to not be deficient? Surely not vegemite, right? But he also dropped that argument later…

echoangle··on Switzerland. Block by block. At 1:1 scale
How does this work? You need to somehow flatten the globe into a plane, right? Are you just using a regular map projection? It says that everything is real scale in the description and that can’t really be true at high latitudes, right?

Does it actually use php2shell or some other known mediawiki vulnerability? Can you also do this for Wordpress for example?
echoangle··on Show HN: Steal My Bitcoin
Shouldn’t the expected value of attempting this somehow include the likelihood of the key actually being on the machine? Surely the probability is much higher than 0? I would guess the expected value for actually being the first one is around $300, not 0

echoangle··on Today's PHP security release, and how we're strengthening security
So how do we not have 10 php situations every day? Obviously just having a rumor that php was vulnerable wasn’t the exceptional problem here, the problem was that the rumor was specific enough to find the bug because it included mitigation advice.
echoangle··on Quad9 to exit France
It’s like buying a dodgy map, except the map pulls updates every time you use it. You could very well provide DNS for free and get everyone to use it and then suddenly serve tampered responses at some specific time and use that until everyone affected notices and switches.

And also you can just serve DNS normally and get the intelligence.

echoangle··on Show HN: Turn regular JavaScript into a neural net
I think this is basically a compiler that turns arbitrary JS code into weights of a neural net that then behaves exactly like the JS program. And the stuff at the bottom are demo projects that are now running as a neural net.
echoangle··on Eight Bits of Trust: eMudhra's CA keys cracked in milliseconds
I think you misunderstood the point.

In a working RNG, every number has equal probability.

But there's a probability <1 that the RNG is working as it should and a probability >0 that the RNG erroneously generates numbers that aren't equally distributed.

And because the range of possible numbers is so large and the probability of a mistake is not that tiny, a small result is more likely to be an error than a random result that happens to be small.

If I write a program to flip a coin and it generates heads 30 times in a row, is it more likely that this is just a random result or that I made a mistake in my programming?

One probability is 2^30, and the probability that someone makes an error resulting in this pattern is probably higher than 1/2^30.

echoangle··on Good type against all odds
> Instead of a whole rectangle of pixels being changed at once, the display is updated line by line, starting from the top one.

Isn’t it actually updating from the bottom? If the text is moving to the left and the bottom seems to be further left, those need to be processed first, right?

echoangle··on Today's PHP security release, and how we're strengthening security
And they never tried this before? And no other such targets are vulnerable in the same way? That doesn’t seem very believable.
