Do you not think that stealing requires the original owner to lose access?

If I sneak into your home, take apart the coffee machine, measure everything, put it back together and go home and build a copy to have my own, did I steal your coffee machine?

Can we not just stick to calling it copyright infringement?

> The same applies to "horse-power". Yet we have no issue making the comparison anyways and HP has become an industry standard.

Yeah, which is why it's only used to compare cars etc. among each other. Nobody would calculate the equivalence of a car to a horse using their HP rating because a horse doesn't even have 1 HP. They have more or less depending on the task you're doing. It was a marketing thing at the time to make steam engines look good.

In france, cars are taxed by their engine power. Do you think pedestrians walking on the sidewalk should be taxed according to their power on an ergometer too?

Do you not see that different things need to be handled differently before the law and just taking an arbitrary measure that you can technically apply to both doesn't capture the situation?

> unless you maintain that the USSR wasn't truly communist.

Didn’t they themselves say they were a socialist society on the path to communism?

Does anyone think the USSR was communist?

The multiplication comparison makes no sense because humans don’t learn by multiplying numbers to change weights. It’s like comparing the lubrication oil consumption of a car to the cooking oil consumption of a human to compare the carrying capacity. That’s an implementation detail inside the GPU and doesn’t let you compare how much they learn. Otherwise, a human would learn much less in their whole life than a GPU does in one second.

I don't think every GPS receiver necessarily has to have this problem, even with the old signal. It's not crazy to keep a week count in persistent memory and use that as a lower bound on startup so you only get a wrong time if the receiver isn't online for 1024 weeks.
echoangle··on Wax motor
I think by thermal gradient they mean a change in temperature over time, not space.
echoangle··on Wax motor
I disagree, I think motor in this case only means “creating movement”. The motor is the thing creating movement depending on the ambient temperature.

Also you seem to have a miscommunication with the person replying to you where they are talking about a spacial thermal gradient and you mean it in a temporal sense.

That’s a manned AH-64 Apache attack helicopter with a pilot and gunner.

echoangle··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
That’s not a contradiction, since missiles are one of the weapon types carried by aircraft. Unless you mean it was literally hit by aircraft in a sense that aircraft were flown into the building.

Yeah, they have exercise equipment there

Apparently they exercise around 2h every day

echoangle··on Wax motor
Wouldn't the thermostatic radiator valves contain a wax motor? According to the definition in the article, using ambient heat as the energy source counts. Or are you saying it's only a wax motor if there's electric heating?

> First of all, because not everyone starts with inherited wealth.

So how are you going to build the supermarket?

> Also because ideally running a supermarket should give you more money even in a deflationary world.

If it needs to give you more money than just saving the investment (which it should, you need to be rewarded for the risk or you would just save the money), obviously the profit margin has to be higher than it currently is, which would increase prices.

echoangle··on google.com/goto: Google's anti-scraping update

What does this mean? Isn’t the location header the redirect? Am I not following the redirect by requesting the location header url?

Wasn’t the criticism of photography kind of correct though? I don’t think people think of photography as an art as much as painting is an art. There aren’t a lot of photographs that a layman couldn’t in principle also take, but only a few people could replicate a good painting.

echoangle··on AirPods 5
Calls on AirPods don’t sound worse to me than on the phone speakers, I don’t think the AirPods noticeably decrease the quality compared to the stuff happening on the phone network.
echoangle··on AirPods 5
As I mentioned in my comment, I don’t notice the worse Bluetooth quality on calls because the audio itself is already bad, so making calls isn’t really a reason to not use Bluetooth.
echoangle··on AirPods 5
If you’re outside with a smartphone, why do you actually need that though? If you call someone, their audio will be bad anyways, and when do you need playback and microphone at the same time? Outside multiplayer gaming, I don’t really know any application where high quality audio playback and microphone is needed at the same time.
echoangle··on AirPods 5
They mean that the audio quality you hear on the AirPods is better if you only listen to audio compared to listening and using the microphone. I don’t know if that happens on Macs too, but it’s certainly true when using AirPods on Linux because you have to switch the profile when you want to use the microphone and then the audio is really compressed for playback.

Laying down arms as an action is different to being unarmed.

And it was a hypothetical, there are a lot of situations where you can kill unarmed military personnel legally.

You can just bomb military barracks full of sleeping unarmed people legally for example.

echoangle··on The largest electric aircraft just flew [video]
> That’s why I approximated the fuselage as two EVS (the frontal area)

Have you ever seen a car and a plane? The Tesla model x has a frontal area of 2.6 sqm and a 737 fuselage alone, without any wings is already 11 sqm. With all attachments it’s at least 20 sqm.

And half of the energy for altitude gain and half for drag is way too optimistic.

The flight cost more than $5 in energy.

echoangle··on The largest electric aircraft just flew [video]
> A 737 has a lower drag coefficient than my car

Drag coefficient is about the shape and needs to be multiplied by area to get drag. Your car is a lot smaller when viewed from the front than a 737.

And there's no way a plane flying at the speed it does has the same drag losses as two EVs.
