eigencoder··on The Theatre of Pull Requests and Code Review
I think approval time would take much longer. The issue is that while actual time spent in review may be shorter, there's a lot of context-switching time costs that increase with the number of PRs submitted.

No one on the team is just sitting there refreshing the list of PRs, ready to pick one up immediately. There's a delay between when the PR is marked as ready and when someone can actually get to it. Everyone is trying to get work done and have some time daily in flow state.

Imagine you have a change; you could do it as one PR that takes 1 hour to review, or 3 small PRs that each take 15 mins to review. The time spent in review may even be shorter for the small PRs, but if each PR has a delay of 1 hour before a reviewer can get to it, then the 3 PRs will take almost 4 hours before they're done, as opposed to just 2 hours for one big PR.

eigencoder··on WiGLE: Wireless Network Mapping
I thought it was _optout_nomap (the _optout for Microsoft, _nomap for Google/Apple)
eigencoder··on Markov chains are the original language models
Could you help me understand how decoder-only LLMs maintain the Markov property? If you used the same random seed, the input to the model "The cow jumped over the" would not give the same output as just "the", right? So isn't that violating the Markov property?
eigencoder··on Libghostty is coming
I was really excited to try ghostty, but the text looks blurry when I place it on my mac's external monitor
eigencoder··on You did this with an AI and you do not understand what you're doing here
I hate this, my mom's account got hacked and now someone is controlling it for who knows what purpose. She had to make a new account and lost all her photos, old posts, messages, etc. Facebook was completely unhelpful
eigencoder··on The death rays that guard life
This is a really neat idea. I'd love to see more of this rolled out in schools, workplaces, and homes.

This article reminded me of something I read recently that installing air filters in schools led to increased test scores.

eigencoder··on iPhone dumbphone
That totally makes sense!
eigencoder··on iPhone dumbphone
When you set up the phone as Supervised, there's a box you can un-check to disable using a different Mac. So just make sure you don't un-check it :)
eigencoder··on iPhone dumbphone
You can install mobileconfig files without factory-reset, but I've found some settings won't "take" until the phone is supervised.

I think it will block using the PWA's, unless you add their bundle id to the allow list

I've been doing what the author did for about a year using Configurator. I have the browser blocked completely. I found that I could still get around it by sending messages to myself in apps like Messenger and using the built-in browser.

So I ended up using an allow list for internet traffic with nothing allowed, which stopped that. What do you find you need the browser for?

eigencoder··on iPhone dumbphone
I totally get that, but for me I'd rather put in controls that make it easy to do the things I want, a la Atomic Habits.

Like, I want to eat healthier. I can try more self-control to not eat the Oreos in the pantry, or I can stop putting Oreos there. Putting guardrails on my devices is just easier to help me live the life I want.

I've been using the same setup as the author for about a year, I can help some.

1. I don't know, never tried this. I do know iCloud backups still work, because I've used them after wiping my phone. But I think you must plug the new phone into your computer and set it up as a managed device before you load the backup, or else parts of the profile might not take.

2. No, it's not. I traded in my old macbook pro for a mac mini back in May. I was able to use Apple Configurator on the new mac mini to change the profile on my phone. There is one caveat though -- the phone is still technically supervised by the old mac, so you have to confirm the profile by going into the phone's settings. Using the original, you just have to plug the phone in and unlock it.

I have been doing this exact same thing for about a year, this guy is basically me! I love it so far. One difference with his setup, I also set up my Configurator profile so that I can only navigate to whitelisted websites, and I haven't whitelisted anything. This means I have no browser whatsoever (even the in-app ones, like in Maps or FB Messenger, don't work).
eigencoder··on We Rarely Lose Technology (2023)
I think there's a lot of recency bias here. Over and over again in human history, we've lost technology. We often lose technology. The past 200 years is the exception, not the rule.

I also think that some parts are really weakly-reasoned:

> The Ancient Egyptians cut stone with an impressive level of precision. The Incas in South America did too. So much so that people sometimes claim that the Egyptians and the Incas used some kind of now-lost technology. But they most likely didn’t: they were just really good at cutting stone.

Yeah, but we're not that good at cutting stone anymore. So what gives? The explanation here is very lacking. They either had a technology that let them cut stone so well, or some special know-how (itself a form of technology, in my opinion) that enabled cutting stone so precisely.

Recognizing that I can't control other people isn't selfishness
eigencoder··on Atlassian is acquiring The Browser Company
What a shame! I've loved Arc, haven't been able to give it up even though it's now maintenance-only. It was nearly dead, I'm sure Atlassian will finish it off.
eigencoder··on What will become of the CIA?
The NRO was not spun out from the CIA. It's a separate organization. The wikipedia article you link to suggests that it was not created as part of the CIA.
