esotericimpl··on IBM Chief’s Message to Remote Workers: ‘Your Career Does Suffer’
Per his Wikipedia Bio:

"He also led the building and expansion of new markets for IBM in artificial intelligence, cloud, quantum computing, and blockchain technology.[17][18] He was a driving force behind IBM's $34 billion acquisition of Red Hat, which closed in July 2019."

Didnt watson get shut down? and all those other expansions are bullshit ? blockchain? seriously?

Also IBM's stock price has been down for the past 10 years.

Maybe the CEO should spend less time in the office and more time remote.

esotericimpl··on A small number of companies are colluding to cheat H1B visa lottery, US says
I'm all for making it easier for my indian friends to become a citizen of the USA.

However, it seems strange to complain about the US naturalization process, when its not easy for me being a US citizen to become a citizen of india.

esotericimpl··on US to start training Ukrainian troops on Abrams tanks within weeks
Proxy wars are wars not fought by ones own military. Korea and Vietnam were faught by americans and thus arent a proxy war for the USA.

For instance the ukraine and russia war is a proxy war for the USA but is not for russia, as russia is fighting.

esotericimpl··on Ask Wirecutter: Can you recommend a not-smart TV for me?
The only thing annoying about the OLED LG TV at least C9 version i have is that it wont allow you to airplay unless you're connected to the WIFI. So you need to add a custom rule that doesn't allow the TV access to the public internet only the local LAN.
esotericimpl··on UK airport scraps 100ml liquid rule with new scanners
It's completely due to prior to 9/11 you left the hijackers alone and they would land the plane, get arrested or die in a shootout with the police.

Now if you attempt to hijack a plane 100-300 passengers will beat your ASS and stop you before you get anywhere near control of the aircraft.

There will never be another hijacking attack where the pilot loses control of the plane from a threat of a would be hijacker.

esotericimpl··on ‘America does so much more to subsidise affluence than alleviate poverty’
Ah yes, the old cato institution nonsense that we spend too much on anti povery programs.

Reason being is because the rich siphon it all off for themselves.

See: https://www.justice.gov/archive/opa/pr/2003/June/03_civ_386....

Note the CEO of Columbia/HCA who committed the largest medicare fraud in history is now US Senator Rick Scott of Florida who just so happened to have plead the fifth 75 times during his questioning.

esotericimpl··on San Jose police union executive director charged with smuggling fentanyl into US
When will people learn, "those who work forces are the same who burn crosses" the cops have been corrupt since the days of the runaway slave.
esotericimpl··on Big Banks Agree to Historic $30B Deposit Injection in First Republic
Thats clearly what the people want... You get the government you deserve. etc...

Based on last weekend's fun the VCs just want their money insured. The only way to do that is to have the government / FED as the final backstop.

esotericimpl··on 30% of YC companies exposed through SVB can’t make payroll in the next 30 days
Can't believe VC has gone full communist. Socialize the losses it seems.
esotericimpl··on Tesla Terminated Dozens in Response to New Union Campaign, Complaint Alleges
Why are they not allowed to try to improve their "horrible" situation.

Corporations are allowed collective action but workers are not, seems kind of untenable.

esotericimpl··on Does Google need a new CEO?
People keep saying chat gpt is the replacement for search, but chat gpt powered bing search is an obscene joke that barely works.

Google's problem is that i searched for "Cape Code VRBO" this morning and couldn't get my answer without scrolling past a full screen of ads.

esotericimpl··on Can Lego City Powered Up trains be automated?
I remember in middle school doing some programming on the Apple 2 in the logo language and using a lego motor to essentially schedule moving the car to the park and then making a motorized lego swing spin around.

I think this is the first time i saw the wonder of programming, sad that its harder to do this now.

esotericimpl··on Andreessen Horowitz Tech Site Future.com Shuts Down, Staff Leave
Chris Dixon and those crooks 100% let retailers hold the bag for all the worthless tokens they were able to dump on the public.

But still the 15x is surprising to me, then again if its based on last years mark to market it makes sense.

Fairly certain all their investments in crypto are going to zero though.

esotericimpl··on Twitter 2.0: Our continued commitment to the public conversation
I don't think people care if left wing or right wing people are banned. People want consistency, safety and the rules applied equally.

Right wing people seemed to act like shitheads more often so they are banned more often.

I'd continue arguing however, conservative law, jurisprudence and overall culture seems to always boil down to that there are in groups who the law protects BUT does not bind, and out groups who the law binds but does not protect.

You can pretty much view all of twitter's new moderation capability through that lens and then it starts to make perfect sense.

esotericimpl··on The Oceanic+ app comes to Apple Watch Ultra
Yet you will still void the warranty if you dive with it:

Apple Watch Ultra has a water resistance rating of 100 meters under ISO standard 22810.

Apple Watch Ultra may be used for recreational scuba diving (with a compatible third-party app from the App Store) to 40 meters, and for high-speed water sports.

Apple Watch Ultra should not be used for diving below 40 meters. Water resistance is not a permanent condition and can diminish over time. For additional information, see support.apple.com/en-us/HT205000.

esotericimpl··on Robinhood cuts losses after transaction revenue drops
the correct answer is Vanguard imo.
esotericimpl··on Ex-Reddit CEO on Twitter moderation
Charge them $10 to create an account (anonymous, real, parody whatever), then if they break a rule give them a warning, 2 rule breaks, a 24 hour posting suspension, 3 strikes and permanently ban the account.

Let them reregister for $10.

Congrats, i just solved spam, bots, assholes and permanent line steppers.

esotericimpl··on An account was suspended
It's odd seeing this on hacker news.

When people on hacker news are literally shadow banned, have their comments hidden with zero feedback or notice.

In fact i guarantee this comment cant be seen either.

esotericimpl··on Liz Truss resigns as UK prime minister
What does the UK and USA have in common? ah right, Australia's greatest export Rupert Murdoch.

Right wing media will destroy the western world.

esotericimpl··on Twitter locks staff stock accounts in anticipation of deal
This is literally what every bank requires their employees to do.

If you work at say Goldman there's a window every quarter AFTER earnings that you are allowed to sell your stock. Otherwise no dice.

So no, not market manipulation, just regular business.

esotericimpl··on Product vs. Engineering
The key to this is to only hire "product" people who grew out of either Design or Engineering, Anyone who started as "product" is a wanna be general who provides minimal value.

My usual first question to any product candidate is do you find yourself coming from a Design, UX, or Engineering background?

esotericimpl··on Google is “concerned” that Samsung is losing customers to Apple
^^ is the correct answer.

I used to buy google pixel smart phones, i had the galaxy pixel, the pixel one, the htc incredible as well.

There's zero chance id ever purchase a google/android product again, they don't support their products, there's a good chance a phone I buy will never get updates and all the interesting features they announced at IO would never come to the existing hardware.

esotericimpl··on Tesla Vision Update: Replacing Ultrasonic Sensors with Tesla Vision
This is the thing people dont realize, as someone who has owned a luxury car before, the Tesla Model 3 is not what i would call a "luxury car" despite them playing in the same price space as the BMW 3 Series.

It's still one of the best cars i've ever owned but the fit, finish and feel are not luxury. My 2013 Ford Focus felt more solid than the model 3 i own.

esotericimpl··on iPhone = Privacy?
Honestly would an apple employee be able to access my icloud account? I understand that the icloud data is encrypted in the cloud and the decryption key is part of signing onto icloud via 2 factor to authorize the device.

Would an apple employee be able to view icloud without the 2nd factor to pull down the decryption key?

esotericimpl··on Investors sue Treasury Department for blacklisting crypto platform Tornado Cash
The person you're responding to wasn't making a "free speech argument". And I don't see how this is in way way a free speech issue.

He's saying just because you set up an ATM in the middle of a city and say, and then say feel free to wash your illegal cash here to do some money laundering.

The act of it being on blockchain and "decentralized" wont make a difference, anyone offering said "launder ATM" could be convicted of a crime.

esotericimpl··on Three arrows founders break silence over collapse of crypto hedge fund
Most Singaporeans are in subsidized housing only the wealthy buy property, i think its something like 80% of all housing is public in singapore.
esotericimpl··on Tech layoffs keep stacking up
I don't see how you can say this. The 2 most valuable tech companies started in the 2000s are Facebook and Google. Those 2 companies are glorified Ad Companies that happen to provide a service so they can aggregate data to sell more ads.

Other than organizing the information of the internet (lately it is debatable as to how well they have been doing this lately) via google, what value addition would you say facebook or google is providing?

Same thing with Uber, now that VCs are no longer subsidizing Car rides for the entire world, it's just a more expensive cab.

What are the tech ventures that have been adding value addition to society. Based on the experience i've had with family members becomes complete Q psychos i'd say net negative on facebook's part and they dont even build anything.

esotericimpl··on As gas prices surge, stations now hold up to $175 of your money when you swipe
Maybe you should buy a larger car. The amount of people buying land yachts lately and complaining about the price of gas is strange considering we all saw these prices <15 years ago.
esotericimpl··on Lost USB with 460k city residents’ personal data found
New Yorkers are incredibly mannered, people return items in the subway that people drop or leave behind all the time.

The issue with finding lost items is that people would usually leave them at the police station, if you're familiar with the NYC police department you would know they are one of the most corrupt and overbudgeted forces in the world.

For some reason theyre not returning lost items to people or actually interested in doing so.

They're really good at standing around and parking illegally though.
