everdev··on Employees Start to Feel the Squeeze of High-Deductible Health Plans
I had the same experience where as a sole proprietor health insurance for a family of 5 is now $2,000/month. $24k/year not for great healthcare, but for the privilege of paying a "discounted rate" on "select services" when you actually need healthcare.

We haven't needed the coverage for two years but when we did, what we needed wasn't covered so we paid full price anyway including $80 for a bottle of Ibuprofen that was casually offered to us. The markups are almost criminal.

For a $1M home you can find insurance for $1,500 per year. It's exponentially less expensive.

ACA was the worst possible compromise to a serious problem. A public option, universal healthcare or deregulation all would have been better options.

It'd be much nicer to be able pay a doctor to make house calls as needed and waive your right to a malpractice lawsuit than to pay to support this insurance/legal/government system we have now.

everdev··on Tesla is raising up to $1.5B through convertible note and share sale
His companies are exciting and I think we're all rooting for him to succeed.

I'm glad he's doing it privately though. If the government was spending the same amount of money (yeah, yeah, if the government was really doing it it would be 10x more expensive, slower, never gonna happen, etc.) and producing the same results I'm sure they would have pulled the plug already.

These companies could dramatically change the world and I'm glad he has the persistence and commitment to keep doubling down on these moonshots (or Mars shots).

everdev··on Don't Waste Time on User Onboarding
Same. 9 times out of 10 I don't want to learn a new tool, just use an intuitive, predictable UI. If I need to "read the instructions" first, your app is probably trying to do too much.

Keep it simple and only use onboarding if your app is truly novel.

everdev··on A Conspiracy to Kill IE6
> Between YouTube, Google Docs, and several other Google properties posting IE6 banners, Google had given permission to every other site on the web to add their own.

This was one of the happiest days off my web development career when I could finally tell clients to drop IE6 support because "even Google is doing it."

Amazing to hear how the tail wagged the dog to achieve this :)

Slight inconvenience, but not a deal breaker.

Yeah I've never heard of carbon neutral cows. If you're saying that the grassland would be replaced with concrete, then there would be a reduction in carbon sequestration.

But still, I don't think it's close. Cows produce a lot of methane:

https://animals.howstuffworks.com/mammals/methane-cow.htm

> Cows emit a massive amount of methane through belching, with a lesser amount through flatulence. Statistics vary regarding how much methane the average dairy cow expels. Some experts say 100 liters to 200 liters a day (or about 26 gallons to about 53 gallons), while others say it's up to 500 liters (about 132 gallons) a day. In any case, that's a lot of methane, an amount comparable to the pollution produced by a car in a day.

> In New Zealand, where cattle and sheep farming are major industries, 34 percent of greenhouse gases come from livestock.

> Initially, grazing areas were filled with a variety of grasses and flowers that grew naturally, offering a diverse diet for cows and other ruminants. However, in order to improve the efficiency of feeding livestock, many of these pastures became reseeded with perennial ryegrass. With the aid of artificial fertilizers, perennial ryegrass grows quickly and in huge quantities. The downside is that it lacks the nutritious content of other grasses and prevents more nutritious plants from growing. One commentator called it the "fast food" of grasses.

> Believers in naturally grown, mixed-species pastures say that the use of them will reduce greenhouse gases, improve animal health and meat quality and reduce the use of artificial fertilizers.

Sounds like it's still a carbon emitter, but if you're going to do it try to find cows that are eating on native, organic grass.

222.2 lb / year sounds high!

I'm not sure if 7M vegetarians would move the needle much, but even ignoring them, that's about 0.6lbs of meat every day for every man, woman and child.

Assuming toddlers and the elderly don't eat that much, that puts some adults closer to a pound of meat a day every day.

That's a lot more meat consumption than I would have estimated.

everdev··on Boeing waited until after Lion Air crash to tell Southwest safety alert was off
Right... Let's not be too hard on the tobacco companies because you'll lose the vote of every blue collar farmer that's wants a stable job cultivating tobacco.

It's a pretty routine argument that says if you threaten my job for any reason I'll vote you out.

Doesn't matter if my job is creating things that crash, giving people cancer, etc.

That argument doesn't fly for a lot of us.

There will still be mechanical and aerospace jobs, just at companies that aren't going to play fast and loose with regulations.

Yes, it's sad on many levels. Never heard of a billionaire farmer though. Maybe Purdue (chicken)?
everdev··on Are the dead taking over Facebook?
If the dead remain on social networks in perpetuity they'll make up a larger and larger % of the user base and actually have a significant statistical impact on the ratio of accounts vs. active users. It would take some sustained high birth rates or a dramatic decrease in death rates to reverse this.

In an extreme example, assuming every human ever born had a Facebook account there would be ~105B "memorial profiles" compared to ~7.5B "active users". Or, about 93% of accounts would belong to the dead.

everdev··on Burger King is rolling out meatless Impossible Whoppers nationwide
I wonder what the cost basis is of an Impossible Burger vs. a beef patty.

The meat industry has built up some economies of scale but it's hard to believe that raising and slaughtering cows is the most cost effective way to feed people protein.

everdev··on Boeing waited until after Lion Air crash to tell Southwest safety alert was off
> she'd lose the vote of pretty much every blue collar worker that aspires to have a stable job somewhere like Boeing

It sounds like you're suggesting that we shouldn't hold Boeing too accountable because they wouldn't be able to retain or hire as many blue collar workers.

That definitely could be a side effect but I'd be more concerned about creating safe airplanes than safe jobs.

everdev··on I Merged My One-Person Software Company with a Bigger Player (2018)
It's almost always revenue, but I'm not sure why.

I'd pay more for a business doing $500k in revenue with $250k profit (50% margins) than a business doing $1M in revenue with $100k in profit (10% margins).

everdev··on Flow9 programming language is now open source
> Flow is a complete platform for writing apps in a functional programming language that can run everywhere.

It says that Flow apps run everywhere (Android, iOS and the browser via HTML5). Maybe I missed it, but how does it do this? Does it compile to a progressive web app?

everdev··on I Merged My One-Person Software Company with a Bigger Player (2018)
Yes, service companies usually sell for 2-3.5x annual recurring revenue (ARR), which is measured by averaging your last 3-5 years of revenue.

And you'll need to be easily replaceable.

everdev··on Ask HN: Are you put off building something because it already exists?
In SaaS you need some differentiating factor, but that's pretty easy:

We're faster, simpler, privacy friendly, cheaper, etc.

Most leading SaaS businesses have proven there's a market, but they're vulnerable on one of those key differentiators.

Sure, you might not conquer the market, but it's probably a safer way to build a lifestyle business than trying to come up with and market a novel idea.

Much easier to find forums of people complaining about product X not doing Y and fill that gap.

everdev··on Show HN: 1MB – Free and easy static website hosting and database
> how is this any better than X

This is called switching cost and it's a challenge for any new business in an established market.

Consumers ask themselves this question constantly and it's something you need to be prepared to answer if you want people to use your service instead of X.

I'm currently using Netlify for free static hosting. How is 1MB any better than Netlify?

everdev··on The gig economy is quietly undermining a century of worker protections
> workers must work ever increasing hours to make a living wage.

That sounds like trying to use the gig economy to make a living. I'm sure some people could do it, but it's hard like you mention.

The gig economy is designed for short, flexible gigs to supplement your income not replace it entirely. The people that are trying to make a full income entirely from piecing together tons of small gigs I'm sure are struggling because that's not what it's claiming to do. It's primary function is flexibility, not keeping up with the Joneses.

FTE is for building wealth, the gig economy is for flexibility. The gig economy filled a much needed gap for people that only want to work a few hours a week or like variety in their work. It's not supposed to be the cure to fill time employment, just an alternative.

It's like complaining that a "tiny house" isn't big enough. It's not what it was designed to do.

everdev··on The gig economy is quietly undermining a century of worker protections
It can be a freedom for some people.

People raising kids might love to work a couple days a week a couple months of the year (to match the school schedule).

Many of them would never consider a 9-5 FTE job.

everdev··on The gig economy is quietly undermining a century of worker protections
As a small business owner it's a huge pain to hire employees. Payroll, taxes, health care, retirement, PTO, etc. add so much complexity that the only real solution is to hire a payroll agency to do that for you.

With a contractor, or a gig, you can define a single project price or hourly rate, sign a short contract and get down to work.
