flipcoder··on Finnish as a world language?
I actually like Esperanto and the concept of constructed languages in general a lot. Esperanto's grammar is very logical and easy to learn. Its a shame there's not much online content in it and the community is fairly small in comparison to what is often claimed. They actually have a Duolingo course and Google Translate works with it, so that's something.
flipcoder··on Ask HN: Why modern computers and “smart” devices are so not safe?
For desktops/laptops, what about Qubes? It's not for the average user but certainly an improvement where security is concerned.
flipcoder··on Ask HN: How can I make a “kid's computer” today as good as an Apple II?
Don't rule out a normal laptop loaded with whatever software you want
flipcoder··on Ask HN: How Do You Remember?
You don't have to add things one by one. It can import lists.

flipcoder··on Analyzing the legal implications of GitHub Copilot
How do they know that all the contributors to your project consent to this usage? How do they know that the project you're hosting is actually your own and that it's only using code written by people who permit this. This seems like a legal disaster. Leave it to Microsoft to do something like this. No wonder they "love" open source.

flipcoder··on Ask HN: What do you do to get your kids to programming?
Zero-boilerplate frameworks work well, like Processing (https://processing.org), or Pygame Zero (https://pygame-zero.readthedocs.io).

These are also a good way to illustrate math concepts visually.

flipcoder··on Ask HN: The easiest programming language for teaching programming to young kids?
Processing (https://processing.org) would be a good place to start, especially if you want to illustrate and play with math concepts visually. You can even make games with it.

Here's my band: https://thujas.net/

We do a mix of prog, fusion, and mathrock.

This has been a problem for years. I can't believe they're just now addressing it.
flipcoder··on Show HN: Svelte NodeGUI, a lightweight Electron alternative with native UI
From Qt's page https://www.qt.io/licensing/open-source-lgpl-obligations:

"In case of dynamic linking, it is possible, but not mandatory, to keep application source code proprietary as long as it is “work that uses the library” – typically achieved via dynamic linking of the library."

flipcoder··on Show HN: Svelte NodeGUI, a lightweight Electron alternative with native UI
Native usually means standard or specific to the particular system. I would say yes to those questions.

People that support mass censorship of people discussing political ideas fit the definition of an authoritarian closer than any textbook conservative I know. I'm concerned about all forms of authoritarianism, including those that want to eliminate the free speech of their political opponents by labeling them as "fascists" or "communists" to exempt them from their rights even more than what they would do to a criminal. It's a matter of integrity and it's often confused with support of those ideas. This is because the authoritarian mindset usually categorizes all people who are against it into one category since their ideas cannot stand up to nuance. This is why they seek to ban speech.

This must look suspicious to people in other countries. Can you imagine what we'd say if Russia were censoring people for questioning their election? We'd assume guilt. It's not a smart move.

flipcoder··on Decolonizing Electronic Music Starts with Its Software
There is a lot of western music that uses different time signatures. Entire genres like math rock, fusion, and progressive rock use them all the time. Most music programs I know support changing time signature and I've seen tuning settings on many virtual instruments. I think the new protocol called MPE has better support of microtonal tunings. The defaults just depend on what software you use and what's most common with the people that use it. I guess people will get angry about anything these days.
flipcoder··on Decolonizing Electronic Music Starts with Its Software
Yeah it's such an irrational accusation. If that were true, why would music programs put the option to change it at the top of the screen? This agenda-driven criticism makes me feel that someone was reading about colonialism and started getting angry at everything in their life.

flipcoder··on Why is it so hard to see code from 5 minutes ago?
It's not as hard to learn as people say it is. It's just weird at first because it's modal and different than what they're used to. You can get away with using it pretty naively and still get a productivity gain.

Years ago, I was getting horrible pain in my right wrist and forearm and after process of elimination I discovered it was from moving back and forth between the keyboard and mouse. Switched to a keyboard-only workflow (vim+i3+vimium) and the pain went away completely.
