flipcoder··on You can't impress developers
I agree. Reddit has changed for the worse. It seems like HN is changing as well. If only there was a way of keeping out those types of people.
flipcoder··on Google Abandons Open Standards for Instant Messaging
Conspiracy or not, Google products fit the definition of spyware.
flipcoder··on Search "beam me up" on Bing
No thanks, I'll use Google.
flipcoder··on Show HN: A REPL for Java
This definitely needed to exist, so thanks for building it. I remember wanting this type of thing a few years ago but iirc my only choice was the Jython terminal. :(
flipcoder··on Elementary OS Luna Beta 2 released
woohoo i love elementary

hoping i'll find their stuff usable on arch soon :D

flipcoder··on Flat UI colors
I couldn't help but read this as sarcasm. I laughed.
flipcoder··on How One New Service Is Tackling The Death Of The File System
so basically a distributed semantic filesystem?
flipcoder··on Ask HN: Do you think public education can be fixed?
automate and export it
flipcoder··on Ask HN: I am programmer, i wan't to die, what can i do?
Go to a doctor and get their opinion. Many, many, people have been through this and live happy lives now with medication. Don't believe the anti-medical pseudoscience that floats around the Internet. It saves lives, and may save yours.
flipcoder··on Ask HN: I am programmer, i wan't to die, what can i do?
Are you fucking kidding me?
flipcoder··on CISPA Passes in the House - Full Roll Call
Well it's better than you'll get on reddit.
flipcoder··on CISPA Passes in the House - Full Roll Call
Obama veto threat = false sense of security to CISPA opposers

His track record tells me he'll sign it happily while saying "I have serious reservations about this".

flipcoder··on Get credit for reading Hacker News
android plz :(

I really like the idea tho :D

flipcoder··on Duetto compiles C++ applications to JavaScript
to quote Daniel Tosh: "Nobody rocks like C++"
flipcoder··on Duetto compiles C++ applications to JavaScript
it has similar appeal to emscripten, which got quite popular
flipcoder··on Paul Krugman (1998): By 2005 Internet will have no more economic impact than fax
He wasn't wrong if you consider he was talking about macro. He appears to be addressing the claim that the standard of living was going to shoot up so high that we'd all be able to live cheaply and not work as much. He predicted instead that demand would stay high since more tech would cause us to keep wanting more.

Sometimes I think there are more anti-Krugman people than actual economists...

disclaimer: I only read a small part of the article

flipcoder··on Show HN: vim-multiple-cursors - True Sublime Text style multiple selection
subvim? :O awesome idea (although I wouldn't use it since I'm so used to my vim setup, but I could see lots of people using it)

I'm linking it here so people can find it: https://github.com/fatih/subvim

flipcoder··on The Hacker Lifecycle
I have a similar work behavior and I structured my work time in a way that helps me keep focused and not get off track: I usually work on a single project for 2 or 3-day periods, rotating between ALL of my current projects depending on what I feel could use my time the most. I generally try to keep projects interesting by incorporating new things I've recently learned into either the project itself or the tools I'm using. The trick I've found is to never let anything get boring, by constantly rethinking and improving things that have gone stale, instead of starting new projects whenever you get another train of thought.
flipcoder··on Hummingbird – A fresh take on music notation
I love how a cool website and some videos can turn any shitty idea into seeming "revolutionary". +1 for marketing ability, but that's it.
flipcoder··on Ask HN: Is college for everyone?
College does not have a monopoly on knowledge. If college helps you learn skills and develop good working habits, then do it. If your instinct tells you your time is better spent working on projects and learning things that way, then do that instead or both in combination. Just don't make the mistake and assume any specific project will succeed, ever. Instead spend your time investing in yourself, developing skills and building a portfolio that will impress people more than a degree will.
flipcoder··on Ask HN: How to get rich in tech with minimum effort?
vendor lock-in
flipcoder··on Ask HN: Open sourcing a previously closed project
If there's any chance of that, then yes, definitely start a new repo just to be safe.
flipcoder··on Ask HN: Do people need direct file sharing or they go cloud?
I have a similar project that attacks this problem from a different angle: http://deployanything.com

I find direct transfer really convenient and preferable to dropbox for certain things (like large files that you only need to send once and to one person). I could see something like you're doing being helped by being built into a chrome plug-in or something so people can automatically receive. The angle of my project is being in the background and automatic, but giving the receivers full control over what types of things they want to accept.

flipcoder··on Aaron Swartz & A Culture of Denial: Depression & Suicide in Tech
People would rather blame something with a face (blaming the suicide on his lawyer, blaming videogame developers or the NRA for mass shootings, etc.) before admitting that the answer may lie in some science book that was too boring or dull for them to pick up and read. I'm glad this article actually addresses the problem directly: mental illness
