formercoder··on Leaked Amazon memo warns the company is running out of people to hire
If anyone that worked at the fed could predict the future, they wouldn’t work at the fed.
formercoder··on Ask HN: How did you find your current job?
It's actually exactly as you described, and it works really well. People are surprisingly willing to help. Just send a message saying "Hope you're well, I'd love to reconnect and learn more about $COMPANY." Email works better than LinkedIn if you can get it. I got my current job by getting my manager's email from a friend and cold emailing him after seeing that he was hiring. Just introduced myself and said I wanted to chat.
formercoder··on Coinbase is rescinding already-accepted job offers
I spoke with Coinbase at a time where I was trying to get away from a job where I worked 70-100 hour weeks. I would always tell recruiters I was seeking better WLB as I didn’t want a company that would have a problem with that attitude. I was told by multiple people that late nights should be expected and Coinbase was not a 40 hour per week company. Further - there are 4 weeks a year where the company shuts down and everyone is “encouraged” to take their vacation during those times. Personally I like to select the weeks that I am off work. The comp was good but I ended up at Google making the same money with great WLB. My equity has been hit far less hard by recent market turmoil as well. Can’t even imagine getting a 6 figure equity package and having it devalue 70% and then grinding long hours.
formercoder··on You don’t need to be “enterprise-ready” or “scalable”
I did SAML with Barclays years ago. The hardest part was getting someone there to click enable for our app. They’d never reply to my emails so I called them until they picked up. Then it was done in 30 minutes.
formercoder··on Japanese audio brand Onkyo files for bankruptcy
I recently wanted up upgrade from 2 to 5 channels. Previously I just had 2 powered studio monitors hooked up to my tv via 1/8th inch. All I wanted was a D2A box that took the atmos signal and let me plug in more speakers. Turns out these are crazy expensive and it’s way cheaper to buy the giant box.
formercoder··on The Google incentive mismatch: Problems with promotion-oriented cultures
FYI - Google completely revamped their promotion and rating system just today.
formercoder··on Be careful with that thing, it's a confidential coffee maker
Both institutions with nation state level security threats.
formercoder··on Goldman told TWTR Elon’s $54.20 offer was too low but has a sell target at $30
It's a phone conversation on an unrecorded line so the presence of the attorney isn't really relevant in that sense.
formercoder··on Goldman told TWTR Elon’s $54.20 offer was too low but has a sell target at $30
Not never. They speak regularly, with an attorney on the line, following approved topics and protocols.
formercoder··on Ask HN: Developers who switched careers, what are you doing now?
I was on the private side doing m&a, debt and equity advisory. MBA is a common path into the role.

MBA
formercoder··on Ask HN: Developers who switched careers, what are you doing now?
I went and worked on Wall Street. Good experience and the work could be interesting but honestly got to the point where I wasn’t willing to sacrifice my life to the extent necessary to stick it out. Heading back to tech in a more business oriented role that I think will be better for me, and money is the exact same for now. It won’t ramp up as fast but I do think the lifetime upside is similar in compensation and immeasurably better in health and happiness.
formercoder··on Intel to Acquire Tower Semiconductor for $5.4B
These companies also don’t all have the same margins, so benchmarking on a sales multiple doesn’t give a good feel for valuation. Everyone does it anyway though, so in that sense it works.
formercoder··on Ask HN: What are your contrarian views?
You can’t get to the moon climbing progressively higher trees.
formercoder··on Blender 3.0
It’s been a number of years since I’ve been in the field but back in the day the paid plugins were everything. One couldn’t do business without them.
formercoder··on It’s mostly a demand shock, not a supply shock, and it’s everywhere
Demand shocks would manifest themselves as bottlenecks in different places along the supply chain as supply attempted to catch up.
formercoder··on Female African elephants are evolving without tusks due to ivory poaching
Seems like the relative death rates of tusked vs tuskless would matter. Remember the 32% is a percent potentially on a small number. Say to an extreme 99% of tusked elephants were killed, 99% of tuskless were unharmed. If tuskless is a genetic traight, it takes over very quickly even though total population size is smaller.
formercoder··on Regulators should treat stablecoins like banks
They still have tier 1 and tier 2 equity requirements. This isn’t really analogous.
formercoder··on Windows 96
Every once in a while since I switched back to windows a couple years ago I’m tempted to fresh install… then I remember my machine still runs perfectly fast
formercoder··on Why do we use R rather than Excel?
Just type ‘0002.
formercoder··on Why we don’t understand heavier-than-air flight
Same as sailing, does the airplane have an equivalent of the keel?
formercoder··on Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) to be retired on June 15, 2022
Wow this is awful. I just moved to an outlook company after years on google. It’s so nice having my mail client be native.
formercoder··on How Big Tech got so big: hundreds of acquisitions
That's what happens when there's a flood of venture capital money whose intention with its investment is to see a specific return on capital on a specific investment horizon.
formercoder··on iPad Pro M1
Touch isn’t great but styluses are for those of us that work on presentations.
formercoder··on FTP is 50 years old
Don’t worry, SFTP is the backbone of the US financial system.
formercoder··on Unusual Stock Trading by Whales in US Congress
When in the private sector those of us that even get a whiff of MNPI are told we can’t trade individual names at all.
formercoder··on Google will stop using Oracle’s finance software and adopt SAP instead
I’m sure many, many PowerPoint slides were developed in order to make that decision.
formercoder··on Writing tools I learned from The Economist
I’d bet against this. Neural networks still don’t actually understand the text at all. I would imagine true understanding is required for this task. You can’t get to the moon climbing progressively higher trees.
formercoder··on Kepler's Goat Herd: An Exact Solution for Elliptical Orbit Evolution
This is something I wish they hammered into you more in school. Took a while for me to realize first you have to understand how good something needs to be, and then just do it at least that well.
formercoder··on Microsoft wins $21.9B contract with U.S. Army to supply AR headsets
Given you’d only be making 500k units, and you’re making them to milspec, sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
