formercoder··on Virgin Australia administrators agree to sell airline to Bain Capital
Exactly. These looks are made all the timer because lenders make money on them. LBOs happen all the time because most parties make money.
formercoder··on Virgin Australia administrators agree to sell airline to Bain Capital
Doesn’t have anything to do with “having to sell out.” Often management gets rollover equity and participates in the upside of the deal.

How can you argue that this strategy is a “good guideline” of what they are planning to do with this asset when it’s only been the result of 15% of previous assets?

Any firm will attempt to achieve as close to a monopoly as regulators allow, as that’s how you maximize margins and thus value to shareholders.

The only thing guaranteed about VC backed companies is that their investors are looking for outsized returns.

formercoder··on Ask HN: Is working as a developer on technical route until retirement feasible?
Depends on the company and your priorities. Do you want to maximize income? Then make sure you work somewhere where ICs have a lot of advancement potential built into the org. Also don’t think that this track avoids politics, you still need to play the people game.

Banks shouldn’t have a ton of this stuff on their balance sheets because of post ‘08 changes. The more likely parties to be damaged are asset managers.
formercoder··on Apple Doubles the Price of RAM Upgrade on Entry-Level 13-Inch MacBook Pro
I think Lenovo has the best chassis build quality but still doesn’t quite compare to Apple
formercoder··on Ask HN: What startup/technology is on your 'to watch' list?
This just provides a cost advantage though right? I mean that’s great, love me some margin, but it’s not really a new frontier. Unless I’m wrong?
formercoder··on Ask HN: What startup/technology is on your 'to watch' list?
FPGAs have been around for quite awhile. Is something changing?
formercoder··on MacOS Catalina: Slow by Design?
Interesting it’s possible that we have different priorities, but I’m not bothered by UI inconsistencies. I use chrome, office, adobe suite, a trading application, games, VSCode, they all have different interfaces that I know how to navigate. I agree that the settings can be tough. Half the time you are in “new” stuff and half the time you’re pulling up the screens from XP. I just google what I need to do though, and never have trouble getting it done.
formercoder··on MacOS Catalina: Slow by Design?
PC + WSL + somewhat illicit OS X VM has been a dream for me as a former Mac user.

The market can stay irrational longer than you can hold OTM Uber puts.
formercoder··on Grubhub stock halted after report Uber is eyeing a takeover
Markets are so wonked that both companies would shoot up on this. No way this creates that much value.
formercoder··on NY launches live dashboard of each regions progress hitting 7 reopening criteria
I’m in nyc and I’m ready to do that. I will do my part to protect the community by wearing a mask etc, but less than 500 people age 25-34 have died of this in the US. It approaches crossing the street risk.
formercoder··on NY launches live dashboard of each regions progress hitting 7 reopening criteria
What we really need is a graph over time of each metric by area. Wish this was easily available by API.
formercoder··on Why is the stock market rallying when the economy is so bad?
Exactly this is why I don’t understand the folks who think inflation is a purely monetary phenomenon. With demand shocks like this how can we not have deflation?
