fullspectrumdev··on How to get the whole planet to send abuse complaints to your best friends
Trivial to accomplish really.

Just acquire a few boxes that don’t block spoofing outbound SYN packets and start spamming random IP’s from random IP’s with SYN packets.

It will generate a shitload of abuse emails and accomplish mostly nothing except fill up disk space with useless emails and such.

fullspectrumdev··on How to get the whole planet to send abuse complaints to your best friends
Exactly this. A single SYN or TCP connection doesn’t constitute abuse.

Unfortunately many people seem to think otherwise and will spaff abuse reports over an errant SYN packet

fullspectrumdev··on New Windows driver signature bypass allows kernel rootkit installs
So what’s interesting is MS say that UAC isn’t a security boundary. Which is some users to admin.

Then they say admin to kernel (in this case) isn’t a security boundary.

While also saying that driver signing enforcement is a security feature.

Which is what’s being bypassed here.

But they claim in this case it’s not crossing a security boundary.

Please make sense.

fullspectrumdev··on Another burnout post
Long walks are honestly underrated.

Especially if you make them a consistent thing and start upping the distance over time and varying the routes.

It becomes incredibly enjoyable to just get out and fucking walk around, look at things, listen to music maybe, and explore a bit.

Something I’ve been looking to write for a while is some kind of thing that I can input a distance, my location, and have it plot unique and somewhat random loop routes. Ideally optimising for exploring novel areas of where I live, with some kind of “route tracking”.

The point is largely the journey.

fullspectrumdev··on The state of GNU/Linux and a case against shared object libraries
It strikes me that Linux seems to have basically reinvented DLL Hell.
fullspectrumdev··on The phone ban has had a big impact on school work
I find most ereaders to be absolute garbage and just read books on my phone.
fullspectrumdev··on Psilocybin Bests SSRI for Major Depression in First Long-Term Comparison
Ah, I made a calculation error by an entire order of magnitude while converting that to “grams of dried mushroom”.

Yeah that dose you would notice a fair bit - it’s equivalent to about 2.5g dried cubes.

fullspectrumdev··on Psilocybin bests SSRI for major depression in first long-term comparison
The doses of psilocybin being used were so low as to be barely perceptible.
fullspectrumdev··on On 17th century "cocaine"
Really? Didn’t realise it was still available.

I remember one of the online smartshops used to sell it, it was actually rather pleasant as a caffeine alternative.

fullspectrumdev··on Is the attack helicopter dead?
The 600 is significantly better than the 300 (which was provided in higher numbers).

Odds are there will be local adjustments made - different, more robust radio link and such to replace the fucking shit one that originally came with the switchblade.

fullspectrumdev··on Is the attack helicopter dead?
Switchblade cost closer to 50k$, its payload was around 100 grams of explosive, and its range and success rate in the electronic warfare heavy environment of Ukraine are lower than a 300$ FPV that can carry 1.5kg of explosive.

Switchblade was designed for a different war entirely.

fullspectrumdev··on Wigle.net: All the networks, found by everyone
I mean, why?
fullspectrumdev··on Wigle.net: All the networks, found by everyone
Pretty much exactly why I stopped contributing.

Even as a contributor the API is unusable due to limits.

fullspectrumdev··on WiFi4EU initiative provides free Wi-Fi in public spaces across Europe
Yep. I’ve gamed it a lot, but it’s a pain in the arse.

You can do the trick of buying up a stack of prepaid SIM cards when travelling and using a cheap dongle, but it’s a lot of effort and eventually stops working - probably due to the IMEI being banned though I’ve not confirmed that.

It’s less effort to just snag a new local SIM upon landing at most airports and using it as a hotspot.

Or, you know. Rolling out WiFi as a public service. Which would be kinda cool.

fullspectrumdev··on WiFi4EU initiative provides free Wi-Fi in public spaces across Europe
Most have caps.

My “solution” for a while was a stack of prepaid throwaway SIM cards with unlimited data from a nearby country and a cheap USB powered 4G hotspot in my bag powered by a power bank. They would last about a month.

fullspectrumdev··on WiFi4EU initiative provides free Wi-Fi in public spaces across Europe
Depends where you are. In some European countries (Germany) mobile data is expensive. And mobile coverage even in cities can be kind of shit.
fullspectrumdev··on Matrix-Libera IRC Bridge Temporary Shutdown, a Retrospective (2023)
The cryptography and security aspect is actually one of Matrix’s good selling points for many companies looking to adopt it…
fullspectrumdev··on GnuCash 5.9 Released
Envelope budgeting works really well, tbh. Especially for saving.

Due to a colossal screw up my bank had after I moved back to my home country, it took me several months to get a new debit card. So I got used to just taking out X cash per month, and dividing it.

I’ve tried a few financial tracking things since getting back on the card wagon, and found none of them actually have the same result (spending less) as just dividing cash into physical buckets.

fullspectrumdev··on A guide to working remote and not paying rent
Teams, zoom, meet, etc all work fine on dogshit connections IME.

If I have to transfer 1TB of data through my own laptop, I’ve catastrophically fucked up somewhere.

As for noise and headphones: You get used to working with noise.

> Every day we need comfy chairs, standing desk, a good keyboard a good monitor etc.

I literally have not had these for my entire career, bar a short stint where I had a couple of monitors.

Desk is “whatever fucking desk”, at office or at home. Same for chair.

Keyboard? Nice to have but I do fine with whatever laptop keyboard so long as it works.

It is entirely possible to work effectively without all the nice to haves, it just requires some motivation. For me, that’s earning a fat cheque.

He probably doesn’t have custody and is paying child support.

Custody still defaults to the mother in many places.

fullspectrumdev··on A guide to working remote and not paying rent
Starlink, ironically, is more reliable than either of the FTTH providers where I live - in a first world country with a massive tech industry.

Ambient noises/infosec issues - noise cancelling headphones and FDE with offsite (encrypted) backups resolves this.

If someone was to steal my laptop right now, I’d be back online within “how long does it take me to buy a replacement laptop and restore from backup?”.

It has happened before - I had a bag with laptop stolen on a business trip and was able to recover within a day and complete my work with fuck all disruption.

fullspectrumdev··on A guide to working remote and not paying rent
It’s not hard to have a reliable setup when moving around. You just need a working computer, and a workable internet connection. Starlink resolved the latter.

Even at home, my setup is literally a laptop on a table and some form of internet connection.

It’s been the same for over a decade, just different laptops.

You don’t need multiple monitors and a fucking special desk or seat to be productive - that’s the lie that companies marketing towards devs tell you.

You just need a computer that works and a workable internet connection. The rest is a bonus.

Some of my best work has been done in airport lounges, on trains, or in the passenger seat of a pickup truck with a mounted Starlink while going at Mach Jesus down some fucked up dirt roads in the middle of nowhere.

fullspectrumdev··on The world knows Wim Hof as "The Iceman", his family suffered domestic violence
If you actually read the article, the legal courts already decided he was guilty of domestic abuse quite a few years ago.
fullspectrumdev··on Floating megabomb heaves to near the English coast
A lot of the useful ones are nitrate based. So, “sometimes”.
fullspectrumdev··on Galaxy Buds reportedly exploded in a user's ear causing permanent hearing loss
“Don’t have cables” is pretty much 100% of the reason why I prefer wireless headphones.

My hearing is already fucked from exposure to loud noises, so the sound quality difference doesn’t matter at all. The latency with AirPods is also rarely noticeable. And charging? Not a huge issue either tbh. I’ve to charge everything else…

fullspectrumdev··on Show HN: Fast and Exact Algorithm for Image Merging
I’ve been looking for something like this for creating surveys using drone footage - extract every “n” frames from the video, then stitch ‘em up somehow to make a “layer”.

There’s existing software for this kind of work, but I’ve been in the mood to reinvent the wheel a bit for some strange reason.

fullspectrumdev··on How the iPhone 16's electrically-released adhesive works
Most people I know who have had a phone stolen only bothered reporting it if they had an insurance.

Otherwise making a report seems to take about half a day anyway and achieves precisely fuck all.

fullspectrumdev··on Show HN: How much is 13B euros?
No. Support for remaining in the EU is incredibly high.

In fact, these economic arrangements with MNC’s are rather unpopular - especially given native businesses don’t get the same tax breaks.

fullspectrumdev··on Apple must pay 13B euros in back taxes, EU's top court rules
What’s interesting is the deal Apple got was fine under Irish law at the time.

Nobody foresaw how things would pan out literally decades later.

fullspectrumdev··on Bypassing airport security via SQL injection
Weev hasn’t been in Ukraine in a good few years. He was last confirmed spotted in Transnistria before the 2022 invasion and apparently hasn’t moved on since.

His stay in Ukraine was rather brief, he was… not well liked there.
