globalnode··on Web Browsers have stopped blocking pop-ups
the vast majority of web users arent technical like HN readers. especially boomers, they actively solicit ad's to tell them what to buy.
globalnode··on Iron Beam: Israel's first operational anti drone laser system
yeah no footage of the system in operation, no demo reel. seems like a feelgood measure. even if such footage existed and was real the things you mention would be cheap and easy.
globalnode··on Nerd: A language for LLMs, not humans
I was going to try and resist posting for as long as possible in 2026 (self dare) and here I am on day 1 -- this is a pretty bad idea. are you going to trust the llm to write software you depend on with your life? your money? your whatever? worst idea so far of 2026. wheres the accountability when things go wrong?
globalnode··on You Need to Ditch VS Code
While this issue is up, I've recently been looking for an alternative to vscode for personal use because it runs so slow now with a few other programs running in the background. My main requirement is copy paste needs to be ctrl+c, ctrl+v and text selection needs to be ctrl shift + arrow keys or some combination of those. Using geany for a week or so hasn't been terrible but its not great either.
globalnode··on Text rendering hates you (2019)
danke
globalnode··on Self-hosting is being enshittified
time marches forward but instead of progress we go backwards. expect to write your own software on limited resources like its 1990 again.
globalnode··on Text rendering hates you (2019)
As a native english speaker, i did try to learn german but eventually gave up. A language sprinkled with "learn by wrote" gender prefixes for every item is just not worth learning. I did have an issue with the numbers being back to front once you get to the unit value but then someone pointed out english does that too for the values 13-19... so there ya go.
globalnode··on Rob Pike goes nuclear over GenAI
you can just disagree with reasons rather than this performative rhetoric. your post makes me realise i was wrong to tease people about rust the other day -- apologies for that.

edit: changed "ad hominem" to "performative rhetoric", think its more fitting in this case but it all seems borderline

globalnode··on We invited a man into our home at Christmas and he stayed with us for 45 years
People like this really are at the mercy of fate, and the people they come into contact with throughout their lives. Its so unfair. But thankfully this story had a good outcome.

Happy Christmas to you and everyone else here as well :)

globalnode··on Fabrice Bellard: Biography (2009) [pdf]
Is Fabrice like the Chuck Norris of programming?
globalnode··on Anthropic: You can't change your Claude account email address
didn't ask
globalnode··on I'm just having fun
nice observation.
globalnode··on Anthropic: You can't change your Claude account email address
I don't see the humour.
globalnode··on Show HN: HN Wrapped 2025 - an LLM reviews your year on HN
And to add insult to injury it says I'm going to rewrite all my Python stuff in Rust (after spending the year teasing Rust). I got a good giggle from the comic book summary -- thanks for making this.
globalnode··on The Deviancy Signal: Having "Nothing to Hide" Is a Threat to Us All
ok, as a privacy enthusiast, some people just dont get it, and they never will. what you need to do is not discuss anything you dont want broadcast with them... ever. im even thinking of using edge or chrome so i look like a normie in a sea of normies. i mean i really dont have anything to hide but i dont want anyone to know that.
globalnode··on Show HN: Stop AI scrapers from hammering your self-hosted blog (using porn)
One solution would be for the SE's to publish their scraper IP's and allow content providers to implement bot exclusion that way. Or even implement an API with crypto credentials that SE's can use to scrape. The solution is waiting for some leadership from SE's unless they want to be blocked as well. If SE's dont want to play perhaps we can implement a reverse directory, like ad blocker but it lists only good/allowed bots instead. Thats a free business idea right there.

edit: I noticed someone mentioned google DOES publish its IP's, there ya go, problem solved.

globalnode··on AWS CEO says replacing junior devs with AI is 'one of the dumbest ideas'
some of the descriptions above of thoughtful supportive work places where people are free to explore different ideas and question assumptions sound like paradise.
globalnode··on Is Mozilla trying hard to kill itself?
i respect that you ate those downvotes standing up for what you believe
globalnode··on Is Mozilla trying hard to kill itself?
yeah pretty sure its a private corp under the ownership of the parent foundation. no shareholders so not sure why they new guy said what he said.. theres no one to impress
globalnode··on Is Mozilla trying hard to kill itself?
as soon as ublock goes, firefox goes.. more anonymity that way anyway since being a firefox user already makes me stand out from the crowd.
globalnode··on Venezuela explained in 10 maps and charts
all these world power grabs are manufactured stories with the back end being -- gimme your stuff. something something playbook something something.
globalnode··on A quarter of US-trained scientists eventually leave
my view for a long time has been that the usa is a net importer of talent and ideas. that its cheaper to have someone spend 20 odd years training in another country and then just lure them in with the promise of big $... isnt that how its been working? or is this some new spin.
globalnode··on The programmers who live in Flatland
no way? excel? and corporate programmers are not the majority of programmers? -- i mean im a non-corp programmer but i thought i was a special snowflake
globalnode··on Iced 0.14 has been released (Rust GUI library)
tcl/tk in python is boring but gets the job done, and its not that hard to customise buttons with a canvas if you really want. i think its underrated.
globalnode··on XKeyscore
Dont need to break encryption if you read data from the source -- O/S vendors will do it for you.
globalnode··on Show HN: Tascli, a command line based (human) task and record manager
Thats pretty much the only option. Doesnt need to be tails either, just a simple linux with no networking.
globalnode··on Show HN: Tascli, a command line based (human) task and record manager
What I dont like about computer todo or task lists is that they kind of describe you pretty well to prying eyes. As a privacy enthusiast im not that keen on having that info get out, especially with recall and possibly multiple other ai agents running around in the background looking through my stuff. I dont know what the solution to this is and Im not sure Linux will be free from this either in the future. Perhaps a disconnected linux box purely for todo lists that i manually ssh into to get access to? (but that would then be connected, hmm... perhaps through a physical firewall intermediary?)
globalnode··on Tiny Core Linux: a 23 MB Linux distro with graphical desktop
i remember playing with mode 13h, writing little graphics programs with my turboc compiler. computers were so magical back then.
globalnode··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
yes sure you can come into america, straight into a holding cell until you hand over your pins/passwords or go back home.
globalnode··on Thoughts on Go vs. Rust vs. Zig
ah i see, thanks. i have no idea what rust code looks like but from the article it sounds like a language where you have a lot of metadata about the intended usage of a variable so the compiler can safety check. thats its trick.
