globalnode··on Thoughts on Go vs. Rust vs. Zig
so does the rust compiler check for race conditions between threads at compile time? if so then i can see the allure of rust over c, some of those sync issues are devilish. and what about situations where you might have two variables closely related that need to be locked as a pair whenever accessed.
globalnode··on Valve reveals it’s the architect behind a push to bring Windows games to Arm
valve is just as ambitious as microsoft or google, they just appear to be the good guy for now because theyre trying to gain some ground on evil corp, and linux is one of the only openings they (or anyone) has got.
globalnode··on Learning music with Strudel
That made me smile, well done and thanks Lennard! (do recommend setting colors = False though)
globalnode··on 10 years of writing a blog nobody reads
> My goal now is to use less words to convey an idea. Everyone's interpretation of words is different, so using more precise language will just muddle your ideas.

What?

globalnode··on The Fatal Trap UBI Boosters Keep Falling Into
what dont you like about communism? do you even know? not a huge fan of extremism personally im just curious on your take.
globalnode··on Garfield's proof of the Pythagorean Theorem
That is interesting and made me think. Only after following some of the other subcomments did I manage to understand it. Personally, replacing the word similarity ratio with scale factor made all the difference. At first I thought it was a circular argument, relying on pythag to prove pythag but that scale factor is the key actually, and the fact that side lengths scale linearly but the area scales quadratically. It feels like a similar trick we see when adding logarithms gives us multiplication.
globalnode··on Be Like Clippy
In before a new co-opted msoft/google clippy v2 comes out with all the ai/advertising goodness we love to hate. Get your movement diluted and confused before it even gets off the ground.
globalnode··on The Fatal Trap UBI Boosters Keep Falling Into
A ubi based economy would require more protectionism from govt of finite resources and perhaps even a carrot based incentive system to get people to do less desirable activities. I dont think a ubi economy would have to be entirely flat in terms of wealth, there should always be incentives for people who want more. I'd rather have more sharing of a protected commons than a few oligarchs having it all to themselves.
globalnode··on The Fatal Trap UBI Boosters Keep Falling Into
>emotional discomfort with various inequities & inequalities

you say it like thats a bad thing

globalnode··on The Fatal Trap UBI Boosters Keep Falling Into
We'll never have a ubi in a opportunistic greed based economy. How are you going to convince "mr i want all the resources" that they should share for the wellbeing of other people (and indirectly for the benefit of themselves but they dont look that far)? its about the foundations our economic systems are built on.

edit: oh and without sounding too conspiratorial hopefully... how are you going to control a populace that isnt desperate, downtrodden and uneducated... /end conspiracy

globalnode··on Confessions of a Software Developer: No More Self-Censorship
Yeah text based beats video a lot of the time.
globalnode··on $96M AUD revamp of Bom website bombs out on launch
Correct, it hasn't been spent yet. But gov't has had ample opportunity to review and cancel it, even when experts were warning its a waste of taxpayer money.
globalnode··on Underrated reasons to be thankful V

globalnode··on $96M AUD revamp of Bom website bombs out on launch
If they hired 3 full time devs at 100k salary each to develop and maintain their website, it would take over 300 years to spend that much money... also unrelated but kind of related - australia spent i think it was over 300 billion for some subs that we'll never get. hot news, if you want free money from people who have no clue, go get it from australia! we are indeed a nation of stupid

A lot of orgs operate under the "ask forgiveness later" principle. They were probably hoping the "later" would be much later...

globalnode··on SimpleMMO – How I made a hole a home (2021)

globalnode··on New Apple Study Shows LLMs Can Tell What You're Doing from Audio and Motion Data
Firstly, I looked up panopticon, and it does indeed seem like that is how modern societies are being structured now, and secondly... It is true that people generally seem to display a lack of imagination regarding all of this. The whole "ive got nothing to hide so what do i care if they surveil me" attitude comes across as selfish and naive in this light.

I wonder what ad-tech or whatever org would do if we got to a state where they just couldnt track or id people. Would we still have free entertainment on the net? would the net even still be mainstream?
