globalnode··on I bought Friendster for $30k – Here's what I'm doing with it
judging from what i hear people say. all you have to do is be able to display who's online from your friends list, and a chronologically ordered list of their posts. thats it. the major platforms are optimising for ads so much they cant even achieve this level of basic functionality
globalnode··on Math Is Hard – OpenBSD Stories
being a bit of a masochist myself, with that user name you make a really tempting proposition
globalnode··on Math Is Hard – OpenBSD Stories
interesting read, makes me think kernel programming isnt that much harder than app programming, just more manuals to read and hardware to understand.

edit: not to dismiss kernel programmers, you people are awesome!

globalnode··on The AI industry is discovering that the public hates it
but violence doesnt work either, even if you conquer a whole nation (or social class or insert w/e here), you didnt really win and oneday they will get their revenge, so you're better off trying the non-violent way
globalnode··on Firefox Has Integrated Brave's Adblock Engine
If Raymond Hill says blocking doesnt work anymore, ill use... umm... Lynx?
globalnode··on US special forces soldier arrested after allegedly winning $400k on Maduro raid
Very funny, thanks for adding that to my list of cynical ideas.
globalnode··on US special forces soldier arrested after allegedly winning $400k on Maduro raid
soldiers are disposable, they prolly threw him under the bus hoping that would be the end of the matter and they could walk away with the rest of the money.
globalnode··on Ubuntu 26.04
Not listening to users is what drove me away from windows. Not a fan of snaps either (or forced windows updates). Recently re-tried linux going to debian instead, which i really like. Reminds me of the old dos days. Gnome was a no-go, kde was nice but too buggy, cinnamon turned out to be perfect. So here i am, on linux finally, enjoying having my computer back and playing around like its 1992 again.
globalnode··on Ubuntu 26.04
UI designers got it right with a taskbar on the bottom and widgets to let you know what you have open at a glance without having to move the mouse across the screen or press buttons. For a multi-application PC desktop thats the right model. Not for phones ofc, they need a different model. Trying to force the phone model on the desktop PC model just doesnt make sense, not now, not then, not ever.

edit: grammar, also Cinnamon fixes these issues thankfully.

globalnode··on If America's so rich, how'd it get so sad?
nice debunk, thats just a wall of words that besides likely being wrong, has no evidence and goes against what i hear people saying all the time.

edit: besides, happiness is not about money. freedom of expression and free/impartial institutions are at all time lows across the western world. which as we speak is in an arms race to be the biggest and best surveillance system it can be.

globalnode··on Using the internet like it's 1999
Turn off javascript and use a text based browser? What? May as well not use the internet.
globalnode··on Fundamental Theorem of Calculus
Table of contents look really helpful to understanding.
globalnode··on Fundamental Theorem of Calculus
Here's my understanding: 1: In the 'olden days' the area A(x) under the graph f(x) used to be approximated as a Riemann sum. 2: Using limits, as the delta x in the Riemann sum->0, we'd call that an integral and set it to be the exact area A(x). 3: If we then look at some small change in A(x), we might notice f(x) = A'(x)... mind blown. 4: since we can now say A is an anti-derivative of f, we have A(x)=F(x)+C (we have to add the C because the derivative of a constant is 0). 5: Using logic and geometry we have C=-F(a) which leads to... 6: The area under the graph f between [a,b] is A = F(b)-F(a). 7: We don't have to cry anymore about pages of Riemann sum calculations.
globalnode··on Scoring Show HN submissions for AI design patterns
I loved the term "Heavy Slop" they used.
globalnode··on SpaceX says it has agreement to acquire Cursor for $60B
is this just to drive up the buy price for others while having no intention of buying it themselves?
globalnode··on I don't want your PRs anymore
They're happy to get ideas from people to improve their product but not happy to help novices improve their coding skills and collaboration workflow. LLM's really are great and horrible at the same time.
globalnode··on US Bill Mandates On-Device Age Verification
there is no anonymity on the internet. the sum of your devices characteristics are close to unique anyway (i could be wrong but i think this is accurate). which kind of supports the hypothesis that this is about shifting responsibility for age verification due to laws coming from other countries recently. i have no idea how this will work on linux, it probably wont.
globalnode··on US Bill Mandates On-Device Age Verification
yeah there is no "one" provider in that example
globalnode··on FIM – Linux framebuffer image viewer
this wont work with wayland will it? has to be a raw tty?
globalnode··on Sal Khan's AI revolution hasn't happened yet
have you noticed the obnoxious coloured swirly around the "chat with x" buttons too? just in case you didnt notice the button...
globalnode··on Good sleep, good learning, good life (2012)
It could be a bit like that elusive thing called motivation. "Just do it" seems so annoying when people say it but in my case sometimes its the only way to start building momentum. What im saying is dont wait for mood, perhaps the mood will develop once you obtain momentum on a goal or task.
globalnode··on Google broke its promise to me – now ICE has my data
it was mainly meta-data they acquired, which paints a fairly complete picture of what you do on the internet anyway. an isp can hand it over also but google likely just has more of it to give.
globalnode··on Sometimes powerful people just do dumb shit
whats the R word
globalnode··on A new spam policy for “back button hijacking”
will google really punish sites for doing this? and if so how do i report a site? i guess i could email the site with the google link and suggest they fix it first
globalnode··on Microsoft isn't removing Copilot from Windows 11, it's just renaming it
i have an old windows 10 pc for things that absolutely must run on non-vm windows, like guardian browser for example with online proctoring. but ive recently moved over to linux for my main comp for a few reasons. 1. steam has made gaming doable on linux and if i cant get it to run through proton or wine then i dont want to play that game. 2 microsoft pushed updates on me. 3. then microsoft pushed ads on me, 4. then microsoft removed any privacy i may have had with recall (they havent given up on it, just likely rebranded and hidden from view). 5. then microsoft forced slop one me. 6 then microsoft recently forced broken updates on me that made logging on a hit and miss affair. with all of these things going youd be forgiven for thinking im suffering from stockholm syndrome, and perhaps i was. but now ive got it in my head that im using linux no matter what, and if that means i cant play games or w/e, then so be it.
globalnode··on Stanford report highlights growing disconnect between AI insiders and everyone
and what happens in half a generation or so when those seniors start retiring? the only way software production will meet demand is if the fewer seniors out there are propped up by way more competent ai than we have now. that also means the work will fundamentally change from being massively nerdy to moderately nerdy with the ability to work with ai. many of the people in the computer industry now just wont be attracted to that type of work.. what will they do? become physicists or mathematicians? and what type of person is tomorrows senior software developer?

edit: maybe todays computer nerds will become tomorrows backyard hackers, the only ones able to beat the ai.

globalnode··on I run multiple $10K MRR companies on a $20/month tech stack
nice article, validates some of the things i already thought. although im sure things like aws and database servers etc are still useful for big companies
globalnode··on Chimpanzees in Uganda locked in eight-year 'civil war', say researchers
fascinating. so if humans are more like chimpanzees than not, then we are a group based animal that distrusts/fears other groups unless some strong leaders are able to bridge the gap? its an over simplification but then you have to ask, what defines a group? language? location? appearance? religion? wrt politicians, their job should be (amongst other things), bridging gaps between groups, instead of what we see going on in the world now.
globalnode··on Show HN: Is Hormuz open yet?
israels only option is to get america involved since they cant achieve their goals by themselves. trump unwittingly got a punch in the face last time he let himself get dragged in so doubt hell go 100% in again, maybe just lip service attacks to try and appease israel while backchannel appologising profusely to iran as he does it lol

edit: actually im likely completely wrong, what i wrote above is what i hope would be the case but sadly in reality the violence will never end and oil prices will go up and up and up. this is just a temporary blip. the fighting will continue until something more substantial happens to sort it out in favour of one side or the other.

globalnode··on Sam Altman may control our future – can he be trusted?
oh thats probably because im a cheap-skate and just use the free garbo models. im sure the pro version is quite good.
