> Will the future be kind and reflect back in the hindsight when Musk dies?
id hazard a guess and say it will, people love to hero worship but he's his own biggest fan. nothing he built wasnt done before in some way. if im being generous id say hes a good integrator of tech, which in itself isnt such a bad thing, if thats all it was.
why on earth would geniuses be the future of humankind? lost me on that line of reasoning. secondly whats wrong with ubi? there are a plenty of people that aren't able to function in the world we've created and they'd benefit greatly from being left to do their own thing. i get that you're trying to be one of those geniuses (lol), but you could stop trying to tell other people whats good for them, thanks. and the world will be saved by open source software? thats it? cool.
edit: jmc - not replying to you so much as just commenting on the blog in general. i agree with your comment.
all this tech is nice and dandy n' all but the guy in charge of it is so distasteful that id rather live in a cave with stone tools than rely on any of it.
during covid they actually laid hospital patients face down (suspended i think?) to help with breathing when a ventilator wasnt available. this behaviour reminds me of that, perhaps your baby was doing this to help with breathing? i dont know...
as a counter point, in another current thread https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46789913, there's a discussion of the "hostile codebase" of openssl. maybe they neglected preparation and "just did it"?
you're right, once indirection appears pandoras box opens up. keep it as pass by value only, it makes the language unique. although the desire for pointers will never go away, people have used them for so long now.
while the non violent protests may not be as effective anymore, i think the point is that if those 3.5% are "organised and coordinated" they will be effective. can you think of any other organised minorities trying to change the world right now? ahem ahem... also explains why govts and businesses are afraid of this and why we have things like mass surveillance and union breakers.
There are a lot of "foundations" funding their research. I don't have the patience to go searching through them to see if they may be causes of conflict of interest first, second or third hand. I just assume there's a conflict unless other research from reputable sources backs it up.
should'nt you always assume your communications are being broadcast into the air unencrypted unless you're connected with ssl/tls? even if encrypted to the tower the carrier can still intercept all your stuff.
the same folks that presided over catastrophic global warming, animal cruelty at industrial scales and human inequality i presume. maybe we can wind those back now theyre gone?
its possible tennis has become more of an established business now and players are being groomed by cartels as a cog in the machine, compared to the more self made outliers of the past.
yep theres all types of people. i get hung up on the structure and shape of a source file, like its a piece of art. if it looks ugly, even if it works, i dont like it. ive seen some llm code that i like the shape of but i wouldnt like to use it verbatim since i didnt create it.
recently had need to run a legacy win32 game on linux. the game works fine but the updater is in some windows specific java that i just could not get to work, which is kind of ironic since its the "run anywhere" java that wouldnt work but the C++ game would. anyway -- i run the updater in a windows vm that has shared access to the game files, close the vm then run the game through wine. works.
or wmd, or poor locals need saving from chemical weapons attacks from their own govt. the funniest spin i heard was some clown trying to say that by taking greenland the us would be strengthening nato!
halfway through reading it and while i like this guys attitude and agree wholeheartedly with what hes saying, if any country does what hes suggesting they'll be sanctioned, have their leaders kidnapped or get nuked... who's gonna go for that? best you can do right now is step quietly and try to build your nations strength for the coming conflict.
Theres another thread on HN at the moment about legislation being written by industry and rubber stamped by law makers. What hit me about this discussion and that one is that there's a lot of self interest out there with very little scrutiny or auditing. It boils down to that basically. If we want to fix problems at the top there needs to be independent auditing, reporting and consequence for people that do the wrong thing. But we all know thats not going to happen so buckle up and learn to live with broken laws and broken software.
online exams are one of the reasons ive lost interest in uni -- i dont mind old school invigilated ones where you go to a building and do the exam but im not gonna let them install anything on my computer and basically have 1 or more people i cant see looking through my webcam. dont need the qual that bad. but i feel bad for people that do. and this idea of oral exams wouldnt work for me either lol
