gnu8··on The Great Crypto Grift May Be Unwinding
Which insurers are writing policies to protect Coinbase deposits?
gnu8··on DigitalOcean seems to be dropping FreeBSD support
Just guessing, probably not enough customers want it to justify spending time on supporting it.
gnu8··on Tell HN: Gmail flagged my Firefox account MFA email as “dangerous”
I see this as Google ratfucking Firefox. It doesn’t matter if this is really a deliberate attack or merely poor filtering. These companies need to be held to account for automated actions taken by their algorithms just as surely as if the CEO himself had given the direction to do this.
gnu8··on Google almost convinced me to spend $400 on useless laser treatments
The cost and bureaucracy required to get one working will probably kill this idea. Those machines require consumables to run the tests, as well as for calibration and QA. The vendor might be willing to sell you the supplies and send a technician to get the machine set up to run a valid test, but it won’t be cheap, and they might be unwilling if it’s some guy trying to run the machine in his garage rather than a medical facility. Beyond that, there is a reason that the machine is on eBay and not being sold or donated. It could be obsolete and the supplies unobtainable, or simply beyond economic repair.
gnu8··on SpaceX avoided a Russian jamming attack in Ukraine
The government probably needs to build a whole new pay schedule for tech workers because they just don’t fit into the General Schedule. This would require an act of congress and I think they are going to have a hard time making the decision to pay government tech workers more than people like the director of the FBI, secretary of defense, senators, etc.
gnu8··on Former eBay Security Director to Plead Guilty to Cyberstalking
It is likely that the other charges are dropped in exchange for the guilty plea.
gnu8··on Solaris 11.4 free for non-production personal use
I don’t think Solaris gets much attention from either the blue or red side these days. Patched or not, I would keep a Solaris machine segmented off with my other retro crap and not use it for anything public-facing where it might be exposed to attack.
gnu8··on Ask HN: Has anyone successfully renegotiated an AWS non-compete?
Not high enough, it should be greater than 100% to penalize the employer more.
gnu8··on Solaris 11.4 free for non-production personal use
Outside of this announcement, I think all of the releases are available to download for noncommercial evaluation and development.
gnu8··on Weightless cats – Do space cats land on their feet? (2011) [video]
This sounds like a worthy experiment. Why don't we already have a mouse artificial gravity habitat on the ISS?
gnu8··on NotepadNext: A cross-platform reimplementation of Notepad++
I’m afraid to ask, but how does emacs do it?
gnu8··on Chrome 0day is being exploited now for CVE-2022-1096; update immediately
I don't get why Microsoft is even working on this. They don't have a web browser.
gnu8··on My New Old Macintosh SE/30 Computer
I look forward to reading about your experience with it!
gnu8··on Latvia wants permanent U.S. troops, foreign minister tells Blinken
The USMC works hard on cross-training to reduce costs, meaning that they can go out and complete short term objectives using fewer guys than other groups might need.
gnu8··on The vintage beauty of Soviet control rooms (2018)
In this case the operator needs access to all of the controls all the time. I'm imagining a harried technician trying to keep #3 from melting down and being confounded by a touch screen that just says "Split atoms? Y/N".
gnu8··on My New Old Macintosh SE/30 Computer
Besides all of the software listed, that machine would also be a prime A/UX rig with that amount of RAM installed
gnu8··on Ask HN: What is the oldest, still supported OS?
Was that package really intended to be a security feature? To me that seems like a low effort way of landing a contract with an over-specific requirement. But security practices used to be way different so that explanation is also plausible.
gnu8··on Ask HN: How much gas we could save in EU if we reduce our heating temp by 3°?
What technology are we missing to be able to ship heat from warm houses to cool houses?
gnu8··on Why is LinkedIn so cringe?
Cringe is a verb, not an adjective.
gnu8··on ‘Fix My Computer’ Cry Echos on Social Media; Air Force CIO Responds
> maxing out dev machines

This is how we get software catastrophes like Teams. There is no earthly reason for it to suffer from the bugs and performance issues that it does and I have to believe the developers responsible for it are completely unaware of how much this software sucks to use because of their hot rod developer workstations. They still dog food at Microsoft don’t they?

gnu8··on Saving on egress switching from AWS to Hetzner
If you can get three in a row you can have a place to sleep for $1200/mo.
gnu8··on Ask HN: Why are we so at the mercy of Google and Mozilla for web browsers?
If you have to twist people’s arms to get them to use something it means they don’t fucking want it. I am surprised that Microsoft hasn’t stooped down to sending out junk mail on paper begging people to use Edge.
gnu8··on Ask HN: Why are we so at the mercy of Google and Mozilla for web browsers?
Microsoft’s track record permanently disqualifies them from providing a web browser.
gnu8··on Ask HN: Career change for elderly UK ex-convict?
> willingness to grind through problems is also probably lower

Maybe I misunderstand what you’re saying here but I don’t think this is fair. An older worker should know to put the problem down at 5 PM and walk away from it, but that doesn’t mean they’re unwilling to work on a problem they haven’t solved before.

At least, I hope some day when I’m an elderly ex convict that I will still be able and willing to solve new problems.

gnu8··on Nobody Cares About Decentralization – They Just Want to Get Rich
What are your expenses to run that? The blockchain must be gigantic by now.
gnu8··on Twitter’s founder admits that shutting down the API was “worst thing we did”
We should just euthanize everyone and blow up the planet if the only worthwhile reason for doing anything is for VCs to extract profit from it. People who think accumulating more wealth than they need at the expense of people who are starving is ok should be thrown into a volcano.
gnu8··on Construction of radio equipment in a Japanese PoW camp
Locality is more like it. Valves are what UK people call tubes.
gnu8··on Bay Area car owners leaving trunks open while parked amid wave of car break-ins
Homeless drug addicts don’t have BTLE sniffing equipment. It is more likely techbros looking for laptops with valuable information on them.
gnu8··on Ask HN: Own .com for 7 years, a new company trademarked my name registered .NET
> They are just trying to “ strong arm” the domain away from you with a threatening letter.

This isn't ok and making them go away isn't good enough. They need to pay for having made that long list of demands and threats, ideally by having their whole business taken away and given to OP.

gnu8··on Real first world war: A monumental account of the Napoleonic Wars (2020)
There is nothing new under the sun.
