Language changes.

And where are we conversing right now?

Were this 20 years ago, arguing such an authority's point might have been reasonable. However, common values have been questioned to such an extreme extent, admitting that you don't know what someone considers vile isn't entirely unreasonable. There are people nowadays who argue that killing an entire race would have been a great idea, and others who claim that any procreative sexual intercourse is rape, without exception. In the end, you're probably still right, but the past 10 to 15 years have been a bitch for common ground.
goatcode··on Agent fired from literary agency for using Parler and Gab
I'd genuinely recommend just letting such things be a permanent fixture of your profile. It would save you a lot of headaches and wasted time dealing with people who'd ultimately not want to interact with you, and likewise with whom you'd not want to interact.

> it's because it's not a simple First Amendment thing

Or maybe governments don't always follow the law. That's a possibility too.

It depends on what your definition of is is, or something like that.
goatcode··on The Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company
Many procedures that are common between today and circa 1960s have grown exponentially in cost. It was about this time that public insurance became a thing, and private insurance approximately the same time, in terms of actual usage. The median cost to individuals has gone up significantly since any insurance was mandated.

It's a private company. They can do that if they want.
goatcode··on The Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company
Private healthcare existed long before prices skyrocketed. Health insurance did not.

100% of cancer has water in it.
goatcode··on 90% of Everything Is Crap
>90% of everything is crap

Perhaps to someone who considers them things.

goatcode··on 90% of Everything Is Crap
Neat.
goatcode··on Ask HN: Anyone know any funny programming jokes?
Why do programmers wear costumes to Christmas parties? Because DEC 25 = OCT 31.
goatcode··on Ask HN: How do you mitigate the risk of echo chambers?
An issue I've seen becoming more a reality lately is that echo chambers are becoming self-sustaining. Moderators on popular discussion sites are becoming more and more emotionally driven, and maintain the status quo to the point that you can predict what you'll read and see well beforehand.

The above being strictly an online issue, the answer I'd have: spend less time discussing things online, and more time doing it in real life.

goatcode··on Look Up Unknown Phone Numbers Using Facebook Reset Password
Did you have one of those books that was organized by number, instead of name? I didn't.
goatcode··on Ask HN: What are some interesting APIs (free or paid) available to anyone
Cat API is pretty cool https://thecatapi.com/
goatcode··on ‘YouTube recommendations are toxic,’ says dev who worked on the algorithm (2019)
> We’ve designed our systems to help ensure that content from more authoritative sources is surfaced prominently in search results

So Google also doesn't necessarily recommend what the user wants.

goatcode··on How a janitor at Frito-Lay invented Flamin' Hot Cheetos (2017)
$4.25, but close enough.
goatcode··on Great Hacker != Great Hire (2004)
Many leaders nowadays are very insecure, and that leads to an intense desire for control. It's sick, and sad, that this has happened over the past few decades.
goatcode··on Mobile Home Skyscrapers: The Elusive Dream of Vertical Urban Trailer Parks
Move to a trailer park to get away from the city, and move into a junkier version of a city. Living the dream.
goatcode··on Amazon disallows pointing out paid reviews
Hm, they may be rule lawyering, then... preferring certain sellers over others, and applying the rules in an inconsistent way to benefit favorites while squishing people they have something else against. All this is speculation on my part, of course, but wouldn't surprise me if accurate.

TIL Amazon comment regulation is apparently run by reddit mods.

goatcode··on I prepared for a decade to graduate in CS in three months
I was initially skeptical, but this looks pretty solid after reading. The author seems to be an absolute beast though, so anyone diving into this should expect to focus and work hard / very consistently.
goatcode··on Amazon disallows pointing out paid reviews
"Amazon does not accept product reviews based on anything except the product" would be a more accurate title. There is another way to review sellers - perhaps this would be a better place for reviewing a seller.
goatcode··on Ask HN: As a junior to mid level engineer what advice do you have for seniors?
Stop forcing us to pair program. We know there's some weird push to do it as its own thing, but it's killing us.
