goatcode··on The Kia Instrument
"...particularly connecting the occipital and frontal parts of the brain, where our emotional control center is situated, and the areas connected to increased creativity and flow states."

Just.. just stick to making cheap cars? This is the kind of thing that makes cars not cheap: things that have nothing to do with cars. Why are there people being paid to do this? Just make cheap cars.

goatcode··on Public Money, Public Code
Any public money should bind the recipient to following public laws that govern government, including access to information. Don't like it as a corporation? Don't take public money.

Welcome to InQTel
goatcode··on Musk announces funding secured for Twitter buy
Citizenship is allegiance. Even if the moral doesn't align with the reality anymore, it still is considered to.
goatcode··on Musk announces funding secured for Twitter buy
I don't think this applies to naturalization. If you're born with the qualifications for citizenship in each, then you are a citizen of both. Apart from being born that way, you may not be able to hold either one or the other, on naturalization.

You enjoy grotesque and offensive things?

goatcode··on How can I get my boyfriend to stop digging his tunnel?
"All of the dwarves in the tunnel stood up and clapped!"
goatcode··on Book report: Practical Doomsday
I care about being prepared. My question was more of a visceral reaction to the overall experience encountered after clicking.

goatcode··on Book report: Practical Doomsday
What the fuck is this?
goatcode··on Tell HN: Turned 44 today and I'm lost
There are probably a lot of parameters to a solution that will work for you. Having had similar periods in my life, while I'm waiting for a resolution I've always found small physical projects that I see through to completion to be a great way to wait. When you complete something, it provides something positive to you, neurologically and thereby emotionally.

It may seem silly, but at least for me, tilling a new garden, building a small physical thing, doing some task that's physically taxing and I can see through has been great while waiting for the end of my larger difficulty. It won't solve all your problems, as implied above, but it could be a good stop gap while you're looking for solutions. Your therapist (or a new one if this one doesn't work out) could provide long-term solutions I'd hope.

You're not alone, friend. You will get there -- I've done it a number of times (though in my case, without the money part figured out; well done in that regard!).

goatcode··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
>I suspect most of the commenters supporting the right of a private company to moderate content is completely contingent on what those moderation policies are.

Of course it is. Reading "Rules for Radicals" helps calm the nerves when you see previously anti-governance "anarchists" cheering for governments and private corporations. You make your enemies play by their own rules, then disregard the rules when they're no longer useful to you.

goatcode··on Dutch scandal serves as a warning for Europe over risks of using algorithms
From what the article spelled out, using algorithms isn't precisely the risk, but using them in a completely horrendously unpracticed and uninformed way seems to be.
goatcode··on My attempted cult recruitment
The person writing this seems really overly-agreeable. It's interesting to see that such people exist, and that the couple could pick him or her out from a crows like that. I guess cults really do have some practice and skill in that regard.
goatcode··on Ask HN: What do you wish you had done/known in your 30s?
Saved more and bought a house.
goatcode··on Start Self Hosting
Site is down. I guess we've learned the limit of this self-hosting advocate's self-hosted setup.
goatcode··on DuckDuckGo “down-rank sites associated with Russian disinformation”
> In case someone hasn't noticed, there is a war going on in Eurasia.

I thought it was Eastasia.

goatcode··on DuckDuckGo “down-rank sites associated with Russian disinformation”
What would you direct searches for "strawman" to?
goatcode··on In Tax We Trust
"How do you do, fellow millionaires!"
goatcode··on 1Password Has Raised $620M
Is there any practical way for anyone but the user to access any of the stored info?
goatcode··on I Miss RSS
>"The trend has crept into new software and new web building technologies. Sometimes depending on what you are building your website with it is harder than ever to add RSS feeds."

Even though the water isn't boiling, the heat may still be on.

goatcode··on FBI's ability to legally access secure messaging app content and metadata [pdf]
It's kind of funny that WeChat seems pretty locked-down to the FBI, especially for Chinese citizens. Makes sense, really, but still funny.
goatcode··on Ask HN: Are there any 4K “dumb” televisions?
If this is an argument that all TVs are smart TVs, then all TVs with an IR control input device are smart TVs (because universal remotes).
goatcode··on I resigned from Twitter
Probably not, but it's more poetic than ironic.
goatcode··on Retired Husband Syndrome
"Is that everything? I mean, it seemed like he said quite a bit more than that." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXGXZiX0pCA
goatcode··on Gravity-defying mail jumpers of Lake Geneva, WI
>mail people on boats

>Billie Eilish has big boobs now

Half way through what YouTube Shorts has been pushing to me lately. I wonder what will be next.

goatcode··on It’s not easy to control police use of tech, even with a law
When you need laws to protect you from laws (or law enforcement), maybe there's a problem somewhere deeper down. It comes back to a principle I roughed out and live by when thinking about rules: if it's out of the box hard to enforce, it likely isn't justifiable as a rule (I'm not speaking about the laws around controlling police surveillance, but rather the laws the police are trying to enforce that lead them to using invasive surveillance).
goatcode··on Ask HN: What is your strongest contrarian opinion?
> mandatory

Pretty much that, or as the first place to go every time, for every card, by everyone. I agree with you: it's a useful tool, but it should be natural and any policy around it should be mutable.

goatcode··on Ask HN: What is your strongest contrarian opinion?
Pair Programming as a first-class citizen is stupid.
goatcode··on Is Web Scraping Legal?
