green-eclipse··on Ask HN: People who use different emails everywhere, who sold you to spammers?
This. It's relentless. Both email and SMS spam.
green-eclipse··on YDB – An open-source Distributed SQL Database
10k is absolutely something in an authoritarian country when there is no free speech at all or freedom of assembly. And serious repercussions for those seen as against Putin.
green-eclipse··on YDB – An open-source Distributed SQL Database
This is an amazing twisting of facts and rewriting of history. Propaganda at its best.
green-eclipse··on NASA will test SpinLaunch's ability to fling satellites into orbit
Here's video of a test launch from their website, if you're curious:

green-eclipse··on Waymo begins driverless rides in San Francisco
Any Google search on this shows your stats are wildly incorrect.
green-eclipse··on Amazon intentionally made it hard to cancel Prime subscription in secret project
Maybe different countries have different laws or regulations on this sort of thing? I don't know.
green-eclipse··on Amazon intentionally made it hard to cancel Prime subscription in secret project
Yes, it's news.
green-eclipse··on Latest build of Windows 11 has ads inside File Explorer
Original title: Microsoft says Windows 11 File Explorer ads were ‘not intended to be published externally’

I tried to fit the original title in this submission but HN restricted the length

green-eclipse··on Examining the covidtests.gov architecture
There's pros and cons to every living situation. The frustration you're experiencing is entirely of your own creation. I'm glad the post office has not spent time optimizing their program on the edgiest of edge cases here, like your housing decision to live in a house with no mailbox. Maybe they eventually get around to it, but in no way should they have waited to roll this out to address your use case.
green-eclipse··on Adversarial Wordle
I struggled with this to start, because if you begin with words that have vowels AEIOU then the real word will have only Y's in it. Like SHYLY, which I just got. So start off with a word with a Y and you'll avoid that fate :)
green-eclipse··on How Telegram Messenger circumvents Google Translate's API
I think you're looking at this all wrong. If Telegram did this officially with Google, would they have had to craft this klunky workaround for breaking up RPC strings and randomizing the user agent? I don't think so.

Also the Google Pay analogy seems off. Telegram backdooring free access to Google Translate is not at all the same as Google partnering with 4 banks for transaction processing. One is totally unofficial, the other is an actual partnership.

green-eclipse··on A 1,300 sq/ft house in Sunnyvale, Calif. has sold for $823,000 over asking

green-eclipse··on How did Facebook connect me to an online date I have met once?
This, and since you both have the Facebook app installed, it saw that you two occupied the same exact GPS coordinates for a while IRL. Various signals of connection.
green-eclipse··on [dead]
Honest question: who is this person and why is it on HN?
green-eclipse··on Apple made secret 5-year $275B deal with Chinese government
> "Sometime in 2014 or early 2015, China's State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping told members of the Apple Maps team to make the Diaoyu Islands, the objects of a long-running territorial dispute between China and Japan, appear large even when users zoomed out from them. Chinese regulators also threatened to withhold approval of the first Apple Watch, scheduled for release in 2015, if Apple didn't comply with the unusual request, according to internal documents."

> "Some members of the team back at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., initially balked at the demand. But the Maps app had become a priority for Apple, so eventually the company complied. The Diaoyu Islands, when viewed in Apple Maps in mainland China, continue to appear on a larger scale than surrounding territories."

Total subservience to Chinese government.

green-eclipse··on Study: Most Dog Breeds Highly Inbred
This is interesting, but not exactly news. Has been known for decades.
green-eclipse··on Microsoft’s new Windows prompts try to stop people downloading Chrome
Welcome to the new Microsoft. Same as the old Microsoft.
green-eclipse··on Several Hundred Google Employees Sign Manifesto Against Widened Vaccine Mandate
600 employees out of 150,000 [1] are protesting? 0.4%. Not exactly a tidal wave.

green-eclipse··on Gmail’s fake loading indicator (2020)
Is it true that you only need to download Thunderbird once? Don't you need to download new versions? Security updates?

There is a basic HTML version of Gmail for slower connection speeds or folks wanting to use less data.

green-eclipse··on Show HN: Google search+display revenue alone is more than all of Microsoft's rev
You're confusing annual and quarterly revenue. YT made $7B in revenue this quarter. Implies a > $28B annual rev stream.

green-eclipse··on US plans attacks on Russian networks in retaliation for SolarWinds hack
My default intuition is that on a nation-state level, everyone is constantly hacking everyone else. Wonder what the reality is.
green-eclipse··on Cerebras’s giant chip will smash deep learning’s speed barrier
The Cerebras chip really stands out in terms of the chip industry's relationship to Moore's law. Look at the graphs in this article for reference:

green-eclipse··on 2020 Cloud Report: AWS vs. GCP vs. Azure
Oracle's cloud is an also-ran. Just follow the investment the cloud giants are making. Oracle is not even in the same league. From:

https://www.platformonomics.com/2019/02/follow-the-capex-clo...

"Google’s incremental CAPEX spend in 2018 is about what cloud pretender Oracle has spent on CAPEX throughout their entire history."

Don't paint all academics negatively with a broad brush due to the failings of a few.
green-eclipse··on Stuxnet was embarrassing, not amazing (2011)
State university professors are technically "government employees." There are, of course, some absolutely brilliant academics out there.
green-eclipse··on Million Short
Would be great if it had video, image, and other search result types.
green-eclipse··on Man sues AT&T over 'SIM Swap' hack allegedly involving employees

green-eclipse··on China is increasingly using exit bans to bar Americans from leaving
This is really bad since China doesn't have a working court system to fall back on:
