green-eclipse··on In a swipe at Chrome, Firefox now blocks ad trackers by default
My hunch is that maybe 0.1% to 1% of people truly care about privacy. People love to talk about it and sound shocked about lack of privacy. But when it comes to actually changing behavior based on privacy, very few people actually do.
green-eclipse··on Firefox has lots of room to improve if it wants to beat Chrome
If you go back in time far enough, Google has improved the web exponentially more than it has harmed it.
green-eclipse··on Jaguar and Audi SUVs Fail to Dent Tesla’s Electric-Car Dominance
Amazon was breakeven by year 7 of its existence (2003). They never went "decades" losing money.

That's a nice story, but the numbers don't support the narrative. Tesla's been reporting revenue for 13 years (that I can find). So I took the first 13 years of both Tesla and Amazon financials. Amazon was breakeven by year 7. Telsa is just losing more money as time goes on. (Apologies for bad HN formatting). Here's the data:

Tesla annual net income, in millions:

Year 1: -$78

Year 2: -$82

Year 3: -$56

Year 4: -$154

Year 5: -$254

Year 6: -$396

Year 7: -$74

Year 8: -$294

Year 9: -$889

Year 10: -$675

Year 11: -$1,961

Year 12: -$976

Q1+Q2 Year 13: -$1110

Amazon annual net income, in millions (rounded):

Year 1: $0

Year 2: -$100

Year 3: -$700

Year 4: -$1400

Year 5: -$600

Year 6: -$100

Year 7: $0

Year 8: $600

Year 9: $400

Year 10: $200

Year 11: $500

Year 12: $600

Year 13: $900

Tesla seems to have the advantage that investors are willing to supply it with endless amounts of cash to fuel it's unprofitable operations year after year. In its 16 year history, it has never turned an annual profit. It has lost billions and billions of dollars. Tesla just received another $2 billion lifeline infusion earlier this year.

Other automakers have to play by more sane financial rules.

"Best entity in the world."

Would love to see some data or citations behind these bold claims.

Well, Elizabeth Warren has targeted the tech giants. But so has Trump.
green-eclipse··on China manufactures a ballpoint pen all by itself (2017)
Who knew ballpoint pen tips were so complicated and specialized? Learn something new everyday.
green-eclipse··on Who Owns Huawei?
This is untrue. If the NSA could just ask Google for it's data, it wouldn't have had to create all the clandestine spying programs that it needed to steal the data from Google. Remember all the info we learned when the Snowden leaks came to light.
green-eclipse··on Theverge.com scores 25/100 on Google's Pagespeed Insights tool (mobile)
Verge loads an absolute crapton of 3rd party trackers and scripts. It's absurd. Ghostery has a field day on that site.

Wasn't aware of Pock before your comment. This looks really cool, thanks for the tip.

green-eclipse··on Fake Samsung firmware update app tricks more than 10 million Android users
The summary from Techmeme is solid:

A Google Play app called “Updates for Samsung”, with 10M+ installs and no affiliation with Samsung, tricks users into paying $35/year to download firmware updates.

green-eclipse··on Apple's service program for butterfly keyboard MacBooks, even out of warranty
Totally fair point. It is a hassle and a regrettable that the keyboards have this problem. It's a design flaw.

But at least they are doing the right thing. Hopefully the new keyboard design fixes the flaws.

green-eclipse··on Apple's service program for butterfly keyboard MacBooks, even out of warranty
To be clear, according to Apple, these keyboard repairs are free.
