We actually do this exact thing to send dynamic parameters to a chart-generating backend server. It works great; you get a surprising amount of compression using gzip (2-4x space savings) and the URLs are naturally cached by proxies without any magic!

We're encountered this issue when dealing with ETF tickers. We use Linux but a 3rd-party redistributor was on Windows; the reports we created had file names in the form <TICKER>.pdf and, what would you know, PRN.pdf caused all sorts of trouble for them...

We had a version of our app be approved by Apple with a critical login bug for anyone how had never installed the app before. Apple didn't even bother to launch the app or else they would have received the error! Now, obviously, this was our failure to catch this in QA but, seriously? Why even have a review process if you're not even going to bother logging in with the credentials we supplied?!
