guyzero··on 300-Year-Old House Transported Piecemeal Japan to California, Then Reconstructed
The Cultural Exchange building at Hakone Gardens on Saratoga CA (near San Jose) was constructed in a similar manner - the building was designed and built in Japan, disassembled, shipped over and then reassembled on-site. Done in 1990 though, so not a historical building.

guyzero··on New Covid Shots Recommended for Americans 6 Months and Older This Fall
From the first paper:

"Conclusions Two vaccine doses provided high protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 hospitalization with the Alpha and Delta variants with protection, notably against infection, waning over time. Two vaccine doses provided only limited and short-lived protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection with Omicron. However, the protection against COVID-19 hospitalization following Omicron SARS-CoV-2 infection was higher. The third vaccine dose substantially increased the level and duration of protection against infection with the Omicron variant and provided a high level of sustained protection against COVID-19 hospitalization among the +60-year-olds."

No indication of negative efficacy.

guyzero··on New Covid Shots Recommended for Americans 6 Months and Older This Fall
"during 2019-2020, the last flu season prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, flu vaccination prevented an estimated 7 million influenza illnesses, 3 million influenza-associated medical visits, 100,000 influenza-associated hospitalizations, and 7,000 influenza-associated deaths."

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/vaccineeffect.htm

Time will tell how effective covid vaccines are when it's mutating as rapidly as it is. The covid vaccine will definitely reduce zero infections if people do not get it.

guyzero··on New Covid Shots Recommended for Americans 6 Months and Older This Fall
This is basically the new flu shot and we'll get the usual litany of anecdotal reports that someone still got the flu/covid, but statistically these shots reduce the number of infections and the severity of infections with few side effects, so I'll keep getting them.
guyzero··on De-googling, so far
This entire forum is an advertisement for an investment firm. Many posts are advertisements for startups.
guyzero··on De-googling, so far
Do you walk out of a movie once someone drinks a Coke on screen? This seems like a level of ideological devotion that makes doing anything pretty difficult.
guyzero··on De-googling, so far
I find it crazy that someone will say "I still consume it more than any other type of video media" but somehow just paying for it isn't an option. You can pay to make YT ads go away. And the payments go to the video creators (eventually).
guyzero··on Gone 10 years, World’s Biggest Bookstore still grips readers
Going to The WBB in the 80's was a great experience. So many books to browse, it felt like they had every magazine and periodical in existence. But it did get a lot worse by the 2000's, turning into what Indigo has become selling gifts and other things. But definitely a high point of the pre-2000 retail experience like the huge record stores on Yonge St that are now all gone. Also, in a Toronto Gen X retail deep cut, Mr Gameways Ark was just up the street and was a mecca for 80's Toronto D&D players.
guyzero··on I'm a Former Surgeon General and I Couldn't Believe My $10k Medical Bill
"Shop around" is a great capitalist mantra, except that medical emergencies are pretty obviously a situation where you're absolutely not going to shop around.
guyzero··on US drug control agency will move to reclassify marijuana
But there's as many shuttered pot shops in Toronto as there are open ones. I think the industry is still shaking out and there's a lot of volatility.

guyzero··on California is gripped by economic problems, with no easy fix
Every rational repeal proposal is a phase out with a few exceptions for seniors.

And the reason it hans't been phased out is that the state has significant issues with legislative process as well as economic management. i.e. passing constitutional amendments by popular vote instead of just regular laws which makes them borderline irreversible.

guyzero··on Canada's maple syrup reserve hits 16-year low
It's less artificial scarcity than production management to ensure consistent high prices. Lost of Canadian agricultural sectors have quotas to keep prices high to ensure domestic supply and are a de facto subsidy to farmers. Dairy, poultry, maple syrup. Plus import controls on these same products.

The system is divisive but it does what it was intended to do - keep Canadian farmers in business by charging domestic consumers more.

guyzero··on Buying a Home Near Nvidia's Headquarters Is Nearly Impossible Right Now
Cupertino schools are a draw for young families that can afford a $2.5M+ house, which is not every family in the area. I live in the area and bike to work past Nivdia HQ every day. Santa Clara used to be "cheap" and unsurprisingly it's becoming more expensive, like the cities it borders. The details on "downtown" Santa Clara are irrelevant as everyone simply drives to San Jose, Mountain view, Sunnyvale, Cupertino, etc, etc to get dinner or go hang out anyway.

Santa Clara's house prices have been trending up for many years because it's a short commute to many companies full of highly-paid people. Nvidia's recent market cap surge has little to do with it. https://www.redfin.com/zipcode/95050/housing-market

guyzero··on Buying a Home Near Nvidia's Headquarters Is Nearly Impossible Right Now
Santa Clara finally caught up with Palo Alto, Cupertino & Sunnyvale. It's not really that surprising considering all the other big companies - literally the entire FAANG - within a few miles of Nvidia's HQ.

guyzero··on Spotify will reduce total headcount by approximately 17%
I suppose one could argue whether Walmart's primary value-add is sales or whether it's logistics, but certainly either of those is a higher priority than making things for consumers to sell. House brand items are still produced and packaged by some other company.

The "logistics" of Spotify's business are mostly commoditized (storage, computer, app development), but certainly they have label relationships that would be hard for a new competitor to replicate. But the key part is that for whatever reason 226 million people have given Spotify their credit card number (or local analog) which makes them pretty important to record labels.

guyzero··on Spotify will reduce total headcount by approximately 17%
Spotify is a sales channel. Walmart doesn't actually make anything, US car dealerships don't make anything. But they have customers and that's all it takes to sell something.

And, strangely enough, once a sales channel is big enough it can begin taking a bigger slice of profits and telling suppliers what they should be doing (a la Walmart).

guyzero··on A shortage of teachers for computer science classes in California
Microsoft is way ahead of you: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/teals

"Technology Education and Learning Support (TEALS) is a Microsoft Philanthropies program that builds sustainable computer science (CS) programs in high schools. We focus on serving students excluded from learning CS because of race, gender, or geography. TEALS helps teachers learn to teach CS by pairing them with industry volunteers and proven curricula."

guyzero··on National Center for Home Food Preservation
I see people saying to can low-acid foods in water bath canners for a really long time. There's no amount of time at 100C that kills botulism in low-acid foods.

Tomatoes are high acid. It's things like carrots or green beans and such that hard require a pressure canner.

Also you should answer this question by consulting a canning guide and not by asking a forum for technology & entrepreneurship.
