you put in a word, and then it finds words that overlap phonetically in the front and in the back (left and right side of the page)...

i made this to brainstorm domain names
handler··on Show HN: MadPattern: explore the 17 planar tilings with vector art
this is a good example of the power of madpattern: patterns that scale infinitely and tile infinitely
handler··on Show HN: MadPattern: explore the 17 planar tilings with vector art
this is an example of one of my more "wholesome" projects

yeah, i guess when you think about it... people just sit in front of the tv and flip through the channels until they see something they like. though i would argue that the main cause of that is due to commercials.

if you're interested in trying to rig this up for a different purpose (cooking vids, etc...), i'd be game to try it out. it really wouldn't take much code-wise. shoot me an email.

there's nothing restricting it to porn except for the fact that porn is one of the only types of video that humans tend to watch without desire for context. it's not as often that you find someone lining up 100 tv shows in a row, watching 10 seconds, and then skipping to the next. i intend to to use the technology in the future (on a different site) to give a `gist` of a style of film. so you would choose "show me what noir film looks like" and you could just skip through clips real fast to learn.

i agree, there's plenty of room for improvement. i spent about a month building the player, and it's my first project in Flex. i am however keeping track of all the clicks, which i can use to provide natural ranking later.

agreed, i could really benefit from a UI designer... unfortunately i build and design all by myself, and my design aesthetic isn't necessarily simple/obvious.

THIS is so that my girlfriend can get a break once in a while

the tags fade out when you idle your mouse

clicking on the video for pausing is a good idea, hadn't thought of that

you presume right, if you're really curious shoot me an email

great point about the negative tags, it's on the list of things i'd like to add... ostensibly this would be later on when you can become a member, and you can have "tag sets" for different moods.

as far as the slick/heavily produced stuff, you should try looking through the niches at the top. tons of stuff gets lumped under "straight" porn, but there's all sorts of subcategories. right now there's ~85,000 videos in the db.

oh, forgot to mention. one of the cool things it does is preload the next videos in the queue once the current one is finished downloading.
handler··on [dead]
it's built modularly/would be easy to switch the content. just need a feed of FLV's with tags and we're all set.
handler··on [dead]
no it was just a typo.

haha, conceptually i believe this is, but yeah, i have another startup i'm working on which would be considered much more worthwhile. i'll post that in the next few weeks as i fix a few more bugs.
handler··on How to get your startup on Hacker News
is there any way to tell if your submission is getting deleted as spam? i've been a member for more than 6 months but don't comment that often/have never submitted and can't tell why my posts aren't going through.
handler··on GazeHawk (YC S10) Does Eyetracking With Web Cams
awesome, once you get enough data like that you can do real cool analytics like "what color draws the most attention", "do drop shadows make it easier to focus on sections", etc... it would make for a great blog, something along the lines of http://blog.okcupid.com/

it would be extra useful if you could see the order in which people look at things
handler··on Apple Takes on Droid X With Latest Smartphone Antenna Video
i've noticed that on verizon, bars don't matter. as long as you get a signal, the sound quality is perfect.
handler··on Lab tests: Why Consumer Reports can't recommend the iPhone 4
i don't think apple has to worry, apparently people can't be swayed by facts (see: "How telling people the facts may not cause them to change what they believe" (http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/ideas/articles/2010/07/11/... )).

also, every iphone has had serious signal issues, it's a known problem, yet people still continue to buy them–why would this change anything... most people buy the iphone because of marketing not functionality.

handler··on The end of the road for the live concert business?
it seems that the music industry was making more money than it ever should have been in the first place. when you look at declining sales compared to previous years, of course it seems like something is wrong, but perhaps the years that made the most amount of money were a fluke, and now things are headed back to where they should be.

in the past decade it has become incredibly easy to develop a fine-grained taste in music. the activation energy for seeking music you enjoy has essentially dropped to 0 (searching the internet vs listening to the radio or physically buying cds/tapes/records), which means less people can be fooled into liking bands like U2 or Limp Bizkit. it seems like a no-brainer that less people care about going to those concerts anymore. the music industry needs to update their model, they can't game the consumer into spending money as easily as they use to.
