hashstring··on An Alien Mind
Yawn, you gave a lot of praise but said a whole bunch of nothing substantively.

I work with LLMs daily and recognize the value (for me, it’s speeding up SW development) but I’ve heard the same old song for the past 3 years. It’s getting played out. “But this next thing though! This next thing!”.

Will you say the same thing when the next frontier model releases?

hashstring··on I-have-ADHD: A skill to stop coding agents from burying the answer
These resets also reset your weekly timer right. So it’s like, you may have 30% left for 1 days that you want to use. They reset it, and that means you your “new week” timer starts today.

That sucks, because it doesn’t always work in your favour if you plan your weekly spend.

I think a real reset shouldn’t also reset your week timer.

True, openweight is the correct term.

Thank you, that’s it exactly.
hashstring··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
No one serious about security touches Omarchy.

Practically every distro suffers from critical LPEs, but at least there’s a bar.

Omarchy is a hot mess that exists for the same reason that matcha is in our coffeeshops and peptides are in our collective memory.

hashstring··on Norway should buy OpenAI
I think Norway should not waste money on this.

I think OpenAI’s does not have ANY moat. They are currently a leader but lack the piles of cash required to stay a leader in the medium/long-term. (They can not in anyway compete with AWS/Alphabet on that front, and they know that too.)

Researchers and engineer will want big comp, as they can get it elsewhere, if you stop paying that, then you loose the knowledge necessary to stay a leader, even though it’s a losing race in the long-term anyway. The company will become a growing pile of non-SOTA techniques and models + old hardware in no time.

Why waste that money…?

hashstring··on Going Dark, and the era of law enforcement hacking
Eh, we’ve seen many footholds of documented chains start in application code throughout time.

To list a few: - WebKit (CVE-2016-4657) - WhatsApp (CVE-2019-3568) - Chrome (CVE-2021-38003)

Then, also the distinction between platform vs application gets fuzzy with bugs in PassKit etc.

The disclosure section is gold. It’s such an accurate description.

Major consumer companies reply just like that.

It’s incompetence and I think to an extent also arrogance.

hashstring··on Cloudflare OS: an open platform for agents, apps, and work
Interesting points!

Sent from my Gmail OS

hashstring··on Cloudflare OS: an open platform for agents, apps, and work
It doesn’t schedule tasks, doesn’t deal with physical memory, it doesn’t initialize hardware or interface with it on a low level. This is just an app that lives in user-space, nothing more.

Calling this an OS is like calling Gmail an OS.

It doesn’t make any sense.

But since OSes are notoriously difficult to define [1], half of America added AI slop to diets that were already repulsive to begin with, regurgitates the chyme, and passionately feeds it to their peers, you may even get away with it nowadays.

hashstring··on Apple is getting this wrong
> after confusing two Asian last names

The addition that the last names are Asian is insane and just put there to make the opposite party look bad. Ironically, all it does is reflect the spirit of OpenAI.

hashstring··on AI-Generated Images Discourage Me from Reading Your Blog

hashstring··on Google fixed more Chrome bugs in June than over the past two years, thanks to AI
Yeah, but now it’s more confidently slowing us down… It kind of sucks. Someone else said that non-SMEs can’t filter through the noise and may actually mistake the AI slop for signal, which worsens the problem.
hashstring··on The session you cannot take with you
You loose inspection, export, replay and audit.

None of the popular providers have real moat, which is very much problematic for OpenAI and Anthropic; their operating margins are deeply red and they do not have the same reserves that FAANG/MANGA has. FAANG/MANGA does the same to kill fair market competition in the long run.

This is one of the ways in which model providers are attempting to artificially create moat where there is none.

There are only functional objections to this.

This is fundamentally antitrust material. However, this is “acceptable” in contemporary USA because the FTC has been gutted to follow Trumponomics.

hashstring··on Be skeptical of OpenAI's rogue hacker agent story
No, we have benchmarks for (pseudo-)objective measurements of capabilities. We have flashy news stories on repeat for marketing.

The point is that they are separate things. If you start mixing them up, analysis becomes more biased and less objective.

EDIT: And do not mistake this for transparency of ClosedAI either. Their incident report was so generic that no one serious can learn much from it anyway except that “a zeroday” was allegedly used. Very helpful…

hashstring··on OpenAI and Anthropic unite against open-weight AI risks to their bottom line
Yes, and thank China for open AI.
hashstring··on “We have information that Moonshot distilled Fable for the development of K3”
We also have evidence that Anthropic distilled all human info they could get their hands on for the development of all their models.

Distillation should be fair game given the (current) game of LLM training. Yes, as a model creator you probably want to protect against it, but it does make you a hypocrite.

> The developer OpenAI has said it would be impossible to create tools like its groundbreaking chatbot ChatGPT without access to copyrighted material, as pressure grows on artificial intelligence firms over the content used to train their products.

hashstring··on Why I Left Google DeepMind
Powerful
hashstring··on Europe's company websites are mostly served by US vendors
Cool, but, the thing is… even though CF is genuinely very good at what they do, I do not think that they have real moat. Nor does any other CDN provider have it.

The top 5 CDNs in terms of popularity are all US-based companies. However, Bunny and other providers are growing and becoming real market competitors.

Switching from Microsoft, Amazon, or heavy Google-based infra to on-prem or other vendors is much more complicated than switching the CDN.

CDNs are a very replaceable component. Basically a DNS record update away, and a bit of config.

hashstring··on Top researchers leave USA for the Netherlands (in Dutch)
That’s not true and uninformed. What even makes you believe this?

Europe has tons of top research universities. Both EU and China are competing with the US [0].

And this news is not an isolated event. The majority of Americans rank US higher education research and innovation as: poor [1]. US top universities are shrinking PhD programs [2.

The thing that makes the US unique is that they are really dropping the ball in a lot of areas, because of bad leadership of the financial and political “elite”.

hashstring··on Israel targeted Gaza children resulting in genocide, UN inquiry says
> most people will continue supporting Israel

Your perspective is divorced from reality.

Across the 36 countries, a median of 67% of adults have an unfavorable view of Israel, while 25% have a favorable view [1].

hashstring··on Israel targeted Gaza children resulting in genocide, UN inquiry says
> Between October 7, 2023 and October 7, 2025, at least 20,179 children were killed, around 30% of the overall death toll.

> A rebuttal shared by Israel's mission in Geneva said Israel "consistently strives to minimize harm to children even in situations of conflict".

Well, it is certainly no question that Israel is killing children en masse.

Israeli officials are saying “but we are trying to minimize”. Well, these attempts clearly failed given 20,179 fatal cases, and let’s also consider all physically injured and traumatized children.

Still, as of today, Israel is killing a child per day in Gaza [1].

So either it is complete incompetence of Israels warfare methods, or it is done on purpose. No matter how you try to frame it, package it: this is not right and Israel should be sanctioned internationally.

Fundamentalists rule this nation. Sanction them, no weapon exports and their actions are not aligned with their official rhetoric.

Also, October 7, October 7, October 7. Yes, horrible, but at what point does the consensus become that October 7 starts to look like a small event in light of the death toll on the other side?

Spoiler: we should be way beyond that. Over 97% of all total casualties are on the Palestinian side [2].

Sanction Israel.

Were the families (at the very least) compensated to some extent at last?

Think modifying shared libraries, ld preload, cron, I guess on some systems /etc/passwd even.
