This thread is a microcosm of Babel.
hello_computer··on The first year of free-threaded Python
Opting to enable low-level parallelism for user code in an imperative, dynamically typed scripting language seems like regression. It’s less bad for LISP because of the pure-functional nature. It’s less bad for BEAM languages & Clojure due to immutability. It is less bad for C/C++/Rust because you have a stronger type system—allowing for deeper static analysis. For Python, this is “high priests of a low cult” shitting things up for corporate agendas and/or street cred.

hello_computer··on Conspiracy theorists can be deprogrammed
> threatened by and worried

No, disgusted by the hubris and the stupidity. "De-programmed" is, in actuality, programming for a different agenda. Shouldn't be programming or de-programming anybody. If one group is de-programming with OpenAI, in time, another group will be de-programming with Tay. It is all abomination.

Robert Barton (of Burroughs 5000 fame) once referred to these people as “high priests of a low cult.”

“Everybody does it” does not alter the fact that a very small very wealthy very connected group of people exert far more influence over policy than the general public.

Per The Hill:

“Take, for example, the most frequently purchased item in SNAP — sugar-sweetened beverages, which comprise 9.3 percent of all SNAP expenditures. This part of the SNAP subsidy, by our estimates, drives 20 to 25 percent of U.S. revenues for Coca-Cola and Pepsico.*”

a chatbot that can barely go a paragraph without hitting an ideological tripwire—like gemini’s “greek philosophers”. for people who grew up in the before times, it’s just a nuisance, but for the kids, this is dark and insidious. so go ahead with your centralizing and your reddit bitch sarcasm, then reeeeee to us there when it all falls into the wrong hands, again.

Could care less about shareholders and compensation. They poison the world--physically and spiritually. It is crime on the largest scale, and all our little professors here chomp at the bit for a piece of the action. Zuck or Elon or Jamie Dimon or Sam Altman... says "Jump!" They reply, "How high?," jump, then bitch about it (anonymously)--here or on Bluesky, in the vaguest and most non-incriminating of terms--rinse and repeat.

responding here since rate-limited:

It has been estimated that up to 40% of Coca-Cola's annual revenue comes from the food stamp program. When a bipartisan effort arose to remove that poison from the schedule, the industry's lobbyists and non-profits were engaged, and set about making the removal into a racial issue. They succeeded, and the politicians promptly backed-off. "Just incentives" doesn't fly when the incentives themselves come from a single source, directed by unelected administrators, who may be subject to considerable private pressure.

"All professions are conspiracies against the laity."

Same execs on the boards of a dozen different companies in the same space--all went to the same schools, attend the same fundraisers, live in the same cities in the same neighborhoods, getting the same advice from the same management consultants...

Leave me to my conspiracy thinking and I will leave you to your complacency thinking.

Hackernews MSNBC types like concentrating power when it suits them. They never think ahead--that they're making little Christmas presents for the "bad guys" when that power changes hands.
hello_computer··on Conspiracy theorists can be deprogrammed
> degree of overt coordination that exists in the world

It's called a paycheck. The execs make a call, and thousands of petty technicians are set into motion. If any of them are reckless enough to voice a reservation, no one is irreplaceable.

hello_computer··on I ruined my vacation by reverse engineering WSC
cost-benefit. the time/electricity/battery/frustration cost of windows defender dwarfs its utility. i’d be better off with some east euro hackerman’s crypto miner running in the background than WSC. at least hackerman knows how to not peg my CPU at 90% while he’s mining his moneros.
hello_computer··on I Want to Love Linux. It Doesn't Love Me Back
exactly! red hat is a huge “contributor” to the “linux ecosystem”, but those contributions are mostly regressions. as the article states, gnome circa 2010 was stable and complete. gnome today is one breakage after the next—even if your vision is 20/20. don’t even get me started on wayland! or pulse. or systemd.

hello_computer··on Only Teslas exempt from new auto tariffs thanks to 85% domestic content rule
i think it’s more than irony. why would the government—irrespective of party—give him billions in refundable credits for over a decade? remember paypal was also an in-q-tel investment? “boring company” to connect DUMBs. starlink for the control grid. spacex to deploy it. tesla as the self-driving AI slam-dunk (windows update car is another control grid). the government has been heavily invested in elon long before donald trump got political. why? with the kind of budget the CIA has, you could make anyone seem as though they had “the midas touch.” name one of your kids “damien” and dress up like the antichrist. the devil has an army. the pentagon points south (down). we ponder our next pleasure as the innocent are slaughtered with our energies, with our tacit approval.
hello_computer··on AI helps unravel a cause of Alzheimer’s and identify a therapeutic candidate
There is a strong correlation (noting my word choice here before the incorrectors accuse me of confusing it with causation) between general anesthesia and onset of dementia. I’m not going to dig it up, but it is easy enough to find on pubmed. There is a decent amount of noticing in the literature.
hello_computer··on AI helps unravel a cause of Alzheimer’s and identify a therapeutic candidate
The primary improvement to human life expectancy was not medicine, but public sanitation. Prior to that, death was bi-modal, with peaks at infancy and old age. When people (and doctors) started washing their hands, the infant peak was flattened. Dead toddlers really kick the average in the nuts.

I don’t think that’s fair. Not that Wikipedia is without bias, but that their ivory tower biases are worlds apart from the lying brutal animalistic Hollywood signals herding the masses in “our democracy”.

hello_computer··on Open Source Projects Receive Funding to Reclaim the Public Internet
EU has almost 450M people. USA had the thing on lockdown for decades with < 340M people. Japan made a hell of a showing in the 80s with < 124M. Europe has the human capital. It is foolish not to use it.

There are other considerations outside of globohomo quantifiables—like workforce development, domestic know-how, self-sufficiency, robustness to supply chain failures & geopolitical upheavals… Basically, the Taleb stuff.

hello_computer··on Open Source Projects Receive Funding to Reclaim the Public Internet
China built-up actual companies in a strategic order. Do what they did, rather than throw peanuts at a grab-bag of foss shitware. They are showing you the recipe for free.
hello_computer··on Open Source Projects Receive Funding to Reclaim the Public Internet
If Donald Trump is the sole motivation for this, they are hopelessly stupid. They need to be in control of their own infrastructure regardless of who runs the USA.
hello_computer··on Open Source Projects Receive Funding to Reclaim the Public Internet
If you are talking about the MNT reform, that is utterly fatuous. Same with f-droid. These are toys for IT fanboys--nothing that will significantly dislodge Europeans from the US tech teat. Europe needs iOS & Google-tier replacements ASAP. China has Huawei, Xiaomi, Baidu, Alibaba. Even Russia has Yandex & Telegram. Europe has zilch.

I figured that after we were caught bugging Merkel's telephone, Europe would have at least gotten started, but I figured wrong.

hello_computer··on Open Source Projects Receive Funding to Reclaim the Public Internet
Money down the toilet. Job #1 is to make a google replacement. Job #2, a domestic phone manufacturer (with its own plaftorm / appstore). These are the two primary portals to "The Internet". Without meaningful replacements, they're still on Uncle Sam's plantation. China figured that out a long time ago, and is in a far better position to digitally de-couple from the United States.

They are so far behind. Focus! Spitballing 42 random projects is a luxury Europe does not have.

hello_computer··on Which countries would benefit most from an American brain drain?
In those WWII days, you could make an acceptable living doing good research. You wouldn't become a billionaire, but you'd definitely make enough to support a family. Somewhere along the line, it became a winner-take-all gold-rush. That attracts the wrong sort of person: a bunch of miner 49ers who think they're Einstein because the system jammed a little bit of calculus into their heads before they grabbed their picks and shovels and headed west.

Here's an old, sad, joke:

What's the difference between a physicist and a large pizza? The pizza can feed a family of four.
