init2null··on FCC rules AI-generated voices in robocalls illegal
Until we properly integrate LLM into culture, people can always test by making off-color remarks that trip up commercial LLM filters. Or by asking strangely off-topic questions. There are quirks that we can use to spot them.
init2null··on Netflix: Piracy is difficult to compete against and growing rapidly
I've had it happen on both Apple Music and Spotify. Given my 40h+ master playlist, I tend to notice it. I always have a few gray holes.

As for replacements, my understanding is that they are often due to the better royalties on original artist re-recordings. I always try to switch back to the originals, and AM, my current service, only sometimes still them. Frustrating to build a collection on shifting sand.

init2null··on BeOS, the PC operating system that tried to challenge Windows and Mac
Haiku has by now surpassed BeOS in style and substance. It's actually a fairly usable OS at this point, thanks to the addition of some Linux drivers and the porting of WebKit. I'd call it suitable for kids or grandparents. No virus worries there.
init2null··on Meta documents show 100k children sexually harassed daily on its platforms
I'd find it interesting to ask the opponents of E2E encryption what their feelings are on cash. Cash is also an untraceable form of interaction. Yes, cash is a medium of exchange for drugs and sex crimes, but it is also a bulwark against overreaching local and federal governments.

How much personal choice and freedom should we give up?

init2null··on Twitch rescinds its artistic nudity policy
The intent was clear. The only reason someone makes a video like that is to push puritanical filtering. I expect searching for beach might include shirtless men, and that's okay. Whether you see them as sexual or not depends more on you than the artist.
init2null··on Twitch rescinds its artistic nudity policy
I really hate gotcha videos like that, but I'm sure it was effective. So will they now move into the skimpy, ill-proportioned bathing suit era? Sexuality will always express itself somehow.
init2null··on "CSS is dramatically more difficult than learning assembly language" [audio]
Handcoding/server-generation HTML running CSS via SCSS with no frameworks is a truly fulfilling experience. Especially if I get to mix in some SVG. I'm one of the few that outright hates JS, so I'm always glad when I get a chance to get back to my favorites.
init2null··on Britain's scariest libel firm
Satire and opinion manages to express itself even in the UK. Give the show "Have I Got News for You" a watch before you assume that freedom of expression is completely dead there. That being said, I'm sure it's tough to feel safe unless you can afford good representation.
init2null··on 300-year-old Tokyo comb company sells 30k-yen ($200) wooden hair combs
I've spent $20 on British-made hand polished plastic combs, but that's my limit. Worth it for comb snobs like me. I suppose everyone has different standards for luxury.
init2null··on How to ripen and store avocados
Since avocado is practically vegetable butter, it's more of a flavor complement than a flavor itself.
init2null··on Death of boy, 16, at sawmill highlights rise of child labour in US
That's certainly a bizarre perspective. Given the competition from developing nations and the advancements in machine vision and robotics, betting on manual labor seems seriously shortsighted.

The trades are valuable skilled labor that include some kind of education, which is totally different than the McWork these teens are being saddled with. There are minimal growth opportunities in being a waiter.

init2null··on ArchiveTeam is downloading and saving content from Blogger
The risk of poisoned content puts this squarely in the domain of our ancestor's storytelling history. This won't be admissible in a court of law, but it'll be a piece of our pre-LLM past occasionally flavored by the storytellers. I still think that's worth it.
init2null··on Microsoft wants to move Windows to the cloud
Does Nadella aspire to be the Alphabet CEO? Doesn't he know that the cracks are already forming in that goldmine strategy?
init2null··on Microsoft launches Windows App for accessing PCs in the cloud from any device
S mode already exists, and it's ideal for implementing this pure remote Microsoft centric vision. The rent-seeking has to stop.
init2null··on Microsoft is removing Maps and Movies and TV from Windows 11
Microsoft has too many new UX designers and too many new marketing schemes to inflict. They know how to reinvent, but refinement seems to elude them.
init2null··on Sober-curious movement: Non-alcoholic drink options grow
The same would be true of those who enjoy gaming or own cryptocurrency. At its best, we're talking about a sort of tribalism. Human psychology is complex, and our relationship with alcohol isn't completely unhealthy.
init2null··on Windows 11's default mail client will show ads starting 2024
There's no doubt that Microsoft is going to stuff ads in every corner of the OS at this point. Ads on the start menu, in Edge, in Solitaire, and now the replacement for Outlook Express. I don't think the good-bad-good cycle will hold for Windows this time. This seems to be a downward spiral.
init2null··on Windows 11's default mail client will show ads starting 2024
Too many dev commenters will hand-wave away complaints about graphics work on Linux. Bitmap and vector graphics are terrible, and I have tried the options. RAW photo editing is mediocre. Font rendering and color management has always been behind.

When I switched to a Mac, it wasn't that MacOS got vastly better. It was that Windows has been getting dramatically worse.

I that being said, Resolve and Blender on Linux can nicely serve subsets of the creative community. We just need more.

init2null··on Windows 11 Pro's On-by-Default Encryption Slows SSDs Up to 45%
I wouldn't use them. Is there any chance at all that those don't have an NSA backdoor? I think most hardware encryption just XOR's on the phrase "We're the government. It's for your own good."
init2null··on Cops Are Suing a Teen for Invasion of Privacy After False Arrest Vid Goes Viral
Police will always need some SWAT and borderline military teams. The question is whether the average street cop needs to be weapon-wielding law enforcement, and I suggest the answer is no.

The danger level goes down when it's known that a cop's power is in their reinforcements. The individual cop would be little danger and doesn't need to be shot.

init2null··on AI photo editors are ushering in a distrust of everything we see
The even more terrifying part is that they are recreated when we remember. Ask me why I don't value eyewitness testimony.
init2null··on Stopbuyingdomainnames
It needs proper hosting and scripting. There's nothing more convincing than a personalized message naming the target of the correction. Joke domains are always best when they're taken much too far.
init2null··on Apple's iPhone 15 Pro Max is a disaster:Screen burn-in latest of reported issues
Did you get AppleCare+ on it? That could guarantee you a new screen every year until the problem is resolved.
init2null··on LoRA Fine-Tuning Efficiently Undoes Safety Training from Llama 2-Chat 70B
I rather wish we'd accept that humans have rough edges. Murder mysteries are good fun because they involve murder. Same goes for gruesome horror. Looking at naked people can be pleasant. We are all on some level unrestrained and vicious beasts, and finding ways to express that isn't bad.

It seems odd that we're trying so hard to block the generation of content that you could easily order on Amazon or watch at a theater.

init2null··on Passkeys are now enabled by default for Google users
Possibly. Security has made internet enabled accounts outright user hostile. Try helping a 70 year old guy get into his Gmail again. I despair over the disrespect Google and the other major internet corps show their tech-naive users.

I've heard "I'll call them" far too often, and am perpetually forced to share the bad news.

init2null··on LLMs can't self-correct in reasoning tasks, DeepMind study finds
I've been wondering the same thing. It's possible that older pre-LLM data sources may become indispensable for training.

It would be both amusing and disturbing to see older Usenet, Slashdot, and Reddit conversations turned into rare and valuable resources.

init2null··on Brave layoffs
It's fine if he voted against it. But a donation disqualifies him from that position if for no other reason than it's distracting from Mozilla's purpose. Whether good or bad, the foundation has a strong human rights focus.

Gervase Markham was a dedicated outspoken fundamentalist at Mozilla until his death and was very influential, but he wasn't in a leadership position. Big difference.

init2null··on Brave layoffs
CTO would've been appropriate, but not CEO. Mozilla could not keep a CEO donating to ban gay marriage. I rather doubt even Microsoft would've kept him. It's divisive and distracting, especially for a public benefit organization. They made the right call.
init2null··on Mozilla.social mastodon waitlist
Nah, toxicity is targeting a non-public figure for abuse or committing doxing. Toxicity is advocating for violence or other crime. It's a replying to a post with targeted insults rather than reasoned disagreement. It's racism and obvious sexism. You could summarize it as simple human decency.

The majority of us can agree on these standards. Despite that, I see plenty of people violate them across the political spectrum. It shouldn't be tolerated or respected, but you can hold a wide range of political beliefs without crossing that line.

init2null··on Show HN: Generative Fill with AI and 3D
Wouldn't that qualify as a crime already? That sounds like fraud to me.
