init2null··on Microsoft begins “Extinguish” phase of dealing with Open Source
They absolutely should, but that's why we need to retain the ability to download and install outside of the store. As long as we have that ability, this isn't a concern.

That's outdated terminology from a time where physical media was needed. Or perhaps we could say that it's in a store's best interest to go beyond that into curation. Just like physical stores do. Consumer protection demands that we don't get OpenerOffice, EasyWords, LetterWriter, etc. as paid forks with no differentiation, generated in bulk by spammers in poorer countries. Meaningful code improvements should be required.
init2null··on SpaceX asserts 5G would ‘blow out’ satellite users in 12 GHz band
Starlink is already using it. The others seem to be more interested in stopped Starlink than using it for themselves. Dish... seriously? They will never do internet.

The potential for this service is absolutely massive on a global scale. I know four people personally who have it here in Eastern Washington and they are thrilled with it. It is literally a lifesaver for rural communities. This is only premium and niche if you are looking at it from an urban perspective. There are plenty of other options... that don't get built. Rural DSL is scary bad (1 Mbps max with dropped packets). Line-of-sight is available to some based on mountaintop visibility. TV band internet was tried by a local provider and didn't even pass their testing phase. Hughesnet and Viasat are insanely expensive and have horrifically high latency. Cellular is way, way oversold and terrible on data coverage. Starlink is here already and it works.
init2null··on The New Homophobia
It's red meat for the conservative base, so they run with it. Mix in a little "grooming" and you end up with repackaged LBGTAnything-phobia from the '80s and '90s.

The far left has tried to take possession of the conversation to show sensitivity and contrast. Which is unfortunate. It shouldn't be political.

Still, we use gender in plenty of places where it doesn't really matter, and I'm good with eliminating it or broadening the classifications. It's a no-brainer. Beyond that, why not just call people what they want to be called? It's just respectful.

In my experience, most people in general are certainly chill if they're in a sexual or gender minority. I won't get pissed if you assume I have/want a girlfriend or wife. It's really not an issue if no insult is intended.

init2null··on Paracetamol use during pregnancy – a call for precautionary action
I can't say that I agree there. It sounds like they can't metabolize it well. As someone who's been abstinent for large portions of my life (never been drunk either), it's still not difficult to drink a single serving, and I normally won't suffer for it.
