ipython··on FCC launches inquiry to increase minimum broadband speed [pdf]
Those households also have one poorly configured Wi-Fi access point, which is jockeying for airtime with dozens of competing access points in the same frequency range, meaning the customer is realistically going to see maybe 200Mbps aggregated across those devices (due to interference, channel congestion, that one streaming device with a -90dBm signal sucking up all the airtime at the lowest supported data rate...)

IMHO we need to address the "last meter" experience before mandated gigabit internet speeds mean anything.

ipython··on Global CO2 Levels
Eh, don't worry, the rich among us will bottle up the 'good' air and, well, just watch the clip from the documentary "Spaceballs" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lz0xULQIaSU
ipython··on Is the Intel N100 a better option than high-end ARM RK3588 boards at the moment?
Read the reviews on alibaba and it seems the n100 doesn’t have a power on after power loss option? (Edit: the bios not the cpu)

Would like to pick one up but need it to auto reboot after power loss. Anyone have one to check if this is true?

ipython··on Why the hospital pager withstood the test of time
That’s what I was talking about as well. A pager is the only mobile communication device allowed in those spaces so it’s impossible for a family member to contact you when you’re walking around otherwise.
ipython··on Microsoft now demands to know why you won't use Edge when you download Chrome
Exactly. See for example https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Midgley_Jr.
ipython··on Car Owners Fall Behind on Payments at Highest Rate on Record
This is why I have two cars: one nice car and my 15 year old prius. At one point, that prius was all I could afford. Stepping into that car grounds me and continually reminds me that I was happy then, and can be happy now, no matter what my financial situation.
ipython··on Woman's Pockets Are Inferior
I enjoyed the animations. I’m not a designer.
ipython··on Woman's Pockets Are Inferior
I was not aware of a democratic vote by women on the state of their pockets?

IMHO you have it backwards. The women that control clothing decisions are a small minority of all women. I bet if you polled women you’d find a majority that would favor larger pockets.

ipython··on Population.io
Sweet. I’m a 100yo female from Uruguay
ipython··on Driver's failure to laugh at odd question during stop not reasonable suspicion
I have never laughed at a police officer during a traffic stop. I'd assume, as a driver, laughing at an officer is a straight line to a ticket or, at worst, an arrest.
ipython··on Why the hospital pager withstood the test of time
The encryption isn't too much of an issue, you're usually just paging a phone number or a code like '911' from your family who otherwise have no other way to reach you.
ipython··on Google-hosted malvertising leads to fake Keepass site that looks genuine
This. The information asymmetry that underlies the scam economy absolutely infuriates me.
ipython··on Google-hosted malvertising leads to fake Keepass site that looks genuine
Yet another day I'm glad I've protected my family with network-wide ad blocking through pihole. Slowly they've learned that clicking on the top links ("sponsored") don't work so now they're trained to look for the first organic search result whenever using Google.
ipython··on Japanese tea commercial actress created by AI, is it the scandal-free future
That’s exactly part of the issue in the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike: https://www.theverge.com/2023/7/13/23794224/sag-aftra-actors...
ipython··on Self-Checkout Is a Failed Experiment
You just named subscription services which by definition “weed out” the people the parent comment was referring to.
ipython··on Self-Checkout Is a Failed Experiment
I would say my worst experience with self checkout was at ikea. During a busy time of year, we visited ikea and picked up about $1000 worth of stuff. As you know, $1000 can net you a lot at ikea - so we probably had at least 50-60 items.

We would have been happy to wait in line for a traditional cashier but there were only self checkout lanes. And long lines for those too! We finally get to the front of the line, dutifully scan each item. Of course it’s impossible to track what’s scanned already since the area to place items is no larger than the one at the supermarket. Fat chance putting a shelf on that tiny area.

Anyway, the system decides that due to our purchase volume, we were selected for a “random rescan”. So we wait for someone to come over and it picks three items for the person to scan. Of course they screw it up, and the system now declares the entire order needs to be started from scratch.

How exactly did anyone save time or effort in this case? What a nightmare.

ipython··on People are happier in a walkable neighborhood: the US community that banned cars
I was curious to see what this looks like, so I clicked the link.

All of the pictures in the article totally tell me a different story: it looks like a generic concrete wasteland. The hero picture has an ugly chain link fence and what looks like a parking lot in the foreground. The picture of the interior of the model apartment is nothing more than an arty shot of a door (?)

I'll be honest, it looks like a post-apocalyptic brutalist concrete jungle to me. I wanted to like it, but there's no way I would live in this place.

ipython··on The anatomy of a smart bulb
I do. Fortunately my house (full of led lighting) only has one place with visible flicker: my vent hood. Strangely enough I’m the only one in my family who notices the flicker, but it annoys me whenever anyone uses those lights while cooking.
ipython··on The pivot table, the spreadsheet's most powerful tool (2020)
It's too bad that the pivot table is a poor approximation of a true multidimensional spreadsheet, for example Lotus Improv: https://instadeq.com/blog/posts/no-code-history-lotus-improv...

ipython··on Where does my computer get the time from?
Oh, it gets better. I used to get reminders in the mail to take my luxury car into the dealership for "service" to adjust the clock twice a year. Or I could ... you know, just press a few buttons for free.

The trouble with all the modern cars that have synchronized clocks is that, well, you've already put in an LTE SIM card, so why not send up some telemetry at the same time? And here we are, with cars that are surveillance devices with four wheels.

ipython··on Show HN: The Tomb of Ramesses I in the Valley of the Kings
Agree- the bent pyramid is amazing. It is a long walk in some cramped conditions so make sure you are able to walk while crouched and not afraid of confined spaces.

The guards outside the pyramid happily handed their ak47 to my son to pose for photos. Like most places in Egypt you will want to carry petty Egyptian currency for small “tips”.

ipython··on Show HN: The Tomb of Ramesses I in the Valley of the Kings
We visited Luxor as a family last year and the Valley of the Kings is absolutely a must visit. The fact that these hieroglyphics are preserved so well over thousands of years is astounding. It feels as if the walls were painted last week.

If you do visit I highly recommend the use of a reputable tour guide. As a foreigner you have a target painted on your forehead 24/7 and having a guide to drive you and walk with you is worth every penny.

I never felt physically unsafe while in Egypt but for example my 8 year old boy was shaken down for $$ for toilet paper in the bathroom. That’s how shameless the grift is.

ipython··on USPS is offering Covid tests again
I don't understand, I thought you had to take initiative to order them? At least that's what I've done... I've never received them unprompted.
ipython··on What was behind Microsoft's layoffs of over 20k people in the last year?
Not the parent but one of the requirements when I shifted into dedicated sales engineering was a healthy work life balance. It has worked out that way so far - I’m very happy and it’s relatively low stress.
ipython··on What was behind Microsoft's layoffs of over 20k people in the last year?
You can always give it a shot. I was on a kind of non traditional engineer path for most of my career (lots of startups with ambiguous roles) and transitioned into a large company as a sales engineer. Engineers who can talk to “normal” people are very valuable.
ipython··on Two photographers captured the same millisecond in time (2018)
The distributed part is the clocks on the cameras across the world. The article discusses the timestamp is included in the exif data embedded in the jpeg file.

The clocks are most likely synchronized based on gps assuming they’re already pulling location data from the satellites, the time is “free”. However, the precision of the clocks is not specified and like any process is subject to error. So at the small timeframes here (sub millisecond), you are potentially within the margin of error. When the error bars of several measurements from distributed parts of your system overlap, how do you determine an ordering between them?

ipython··on Two photographers captured the same millisecond in time (2018)
Think of it this way: you run a website that displays photos in chronological order. You receive these two photos. Which picture was taken first? How can you tell?
ipython··on Philips Hue will soon force users to create an account
You sound irrationally angry but I’ll bite anyway.

1. At night we are turning all of the other lights off. Our bedroom door is open, so the light dimly illuminates the way to our room without having to turn on hallway lights.

2. When we aren’t home it still happens giving an impression someone is home.

3. It looks nice when you walk in.

4. The convenience is worth the $0.00036 in electric cost per day. (Approx 6w * 0.12/kwh * 30 minutes). That works out to be 13 cents per year. The benefit of 1, 2 and 3 above divided by 13 cents per year gives quite the positive ROI.
