ipython··on Qt signal is ten times slower than a virtual function
Out of curiosity, why?
ipython··on Ask HN: For a startup website to show customer logos, do you need permission?
Yes. Ask for permission.
ipython··on Ask HN: Folks who were around the 2008 Recession
This is nothing like 2008. Back in 2008 the mood was much more dire- I remember walking through malls and picking up amazing deals. Like 80% off. If you had expendable income, you were saving it because you may not have a job tomorrow. Everyone else was worried about how they were going to make their next mortgage payment.

As for me, I was stuck in a house that lost 50% of its value. I had just purchased in 2006 so I could not sell and I wanted to move. I didn’t end up leaving until 2012 at which point I was still 30+% underwater and so happy I could short sell without incurring taxes on the difference thanks to legislation.

Now prices are going up- like crazy. Salaries in our industry are skyrocketing. It’s impossible to buy large consumables at any price - cars are selling for multiples over sticker! In 2008 you could buy anything you wanted at a discount if you had cash.

So no this feels nothing like 2008 for me.

ipython··on The mechanics of a sophisticated phishing scam and how we stopped it
I received no less than four Amazon refund scam phone calls today. If only we could have this accelerated timeline for “run of the mill” phishing scams, they would be so uneconomical to run and the volume would decrease significantly… sigh.

As it is I reported the two that didn’t use spoofed numbers to the owner of the number (onvoy/inteliquent as usual). Response time from them is basically infinite, as abuse reports basically go into a black hole.

I understand your slippery slope argument and can agree on some level, however the law often does litigate on these grey areas based on intent.

The intent of the attacker in this case was extremely evident- the page served at that domain clearly used cloudflare’s trademarked logo in an attempt to fool the user into thinking this was an official cloudflare page. The intent to deceive is clear.

In your case, I would imagine your page would avoid making itself appear as official cloudflare marketing material. In fact, I would imagine you would take pains not to be confused with the official cloudflare site. So it would be pretty clear the intent is not to deceive and you would have a very good leg to stand on if they tried to take down your domain.

ipython··on Why aren't smart people happier?
I came here to make the same points that you made so eloquently. The only thing I’ll add is that I wonder if there is some correlation between the traits that make someone so good at solving “well defined” problems and mental illnesses. You can’t be “happy” if you’re paranoid (as one of the OP examples- a 9/11 conspiracy where his own theory- Cognitive Theoretical Model of the Universe, or CTMU- is under attack.
ipython··on How fast is 12th Gen Intel Core?
I don’t know the truth but that was spoken like a true humble leader. If I was forced to draw conclusions just based on that one exchange, I would agree that Jim Keller was an instrumental part of the successful design and implementation of the zen microarchitecture.
ipython··on No More “Insight Porn”
Damn. Now I need to read that book next…
ipython··on Robinhood lays off 23% of staff
I think for me it was more a journey of understanding the necessity of the function and not the person. As in, I would question the need for management or marketing.

As I matured and, in some cases, tried to perform those tasks myself, I had a respect for the function. The people may still suck but at least now I understand how good execution of that function is necessary for the organization as a whole.

ipython··on A little trick to spam the spammers (2021)
Agreed. Great motivator. Slightly different twist is if you have kids - rambunctious kids are even better. We had an issue with a home renovation project that was not completed (we had stupidly paid the final invoice on time, lesson learned- always hold back 10% until you’re 100% satisfied)

My wife got pissed at their lack of response. She took our two boys to their office, sat down, and instructed them to feel free to touch and play with everything (tile, wood samples, etc.) Salesperson notices and approaches “can I help you?” She explained the situation and the salesperson said no problem we will send someone next week.

Unsatisfied with this answer- we had already experienced many weeks of “soon” - she said ok no problem, we will just sit here until someone shows up at our house to finish the job.

Sure enough a worker showed up later that day and installed the three punch list items we had identified. Worked like a charm!
