ithrow··on I’m switching from VS Code to VS Codium
Expecting a IDE to fix someone's terrible code riddle with bugs non sequitur. What programming language was this?
ithrow··on Rust without the async (hard) part
Yes, async is hard. It adds lots of complexity, both to the code and in your mental model. That slows development.

Nodejs devs seem to be doing fine? and I would say their development is faster than most devs working on other stacks. Nodejs is also a top 3 server stack and growing.

ithrow··on Ask HN: How to learn math from zero for adults?
https://openstax.org/subjects/math

For free online textbooks these ones seem to have good reputation on the Internet. I did the 'pre-algebra' and 'algebra and trigonometry' books, found them good. Do all the excersices (very important), sometimes I got stuck (every books misses edge cases) so be prepared to look at other resources.

ithrow··on PlanetScale Insights: Advanced query monitoring
Looks like a must-have thing that is also missing from planetscale is point-in-time recovery.
ithrow··on Notes on Virtual Threads and Clojure
TCO will be part of project valhalla not loom.
ithrow··on D1: Our SQL database
Yeah, nothing about WAL mode which is what most users will want for web apps.

sqlite is accessed via a socket? defeats the whole purpose of using sqlite.

Many here are mentioning using one sqlite file per customer but that sounds like a nightmare for migrations and analytics.

SQLite is great and all these new services and articles are nice but intentionally shadowing lots of complexity.

ithrow··on I'm all-in on server-side SQLite
As they say, "you are not twitter" ;)

Access to monstrous machines is easy today and you have very fast runtimes like Go and the JVM that can leverage this hardware.

ithrow··on Ask HN: Is Erlang an albatross to Elixir adoption?
F# has the same problem, you have to learn C#.
ithrow··on Vim Color Schemes
With the vim plugin? If not, how did you adapt?
ithrow··on Postgres Auditing in 150 lines of SQL

ithrow··on The long strange trip to Java (1996)
The only reason those alternate languages have buy in is because of the Java ecosystem, if Java fades aways those languages would likely fade away too.

You really think AWS is going to be offering Clojure SDKs?

Remains to be seem for Kotlin but the others haven't grow enough to develop a big ecosystem of their own.

ithrow··on Postgres Auditing in 150 lines of SQL
Debezium can be used for this in embedded mode if you are on the JVM.
ithrow··on Postgres Auditing in 150 lines of SQL
Yes but sirix is not a SQL/RDBMS.
ithrow··on SPAs Were a Mistake
Agree, we just add React components here and there to server-side rendered HTML and it works great for us. The issue is most companies want separate teams for front-end and back-end and each team wants clear separation of boundaries and responsibilities between them.
ithrow··on Ask HN: The book that did it for you in math and/or CS?
Hmm I'm looking for an algebra/trig book, curious, that looks more like a book for memorizing stuff than for understanding things? 128 pages seem to little for those three subjects.
ithrow··on Ask HN: Why are you programming your hobby projects in a niche language?
Clojure is indeed niche, but this is compensated by being able to use Java libraries.
ithrow··on Ngrok Alternatives
Have anyone run ngrok on ubiquiti routers, how did it go?
ithrow··on “Sustainability with Rust” post misleading about Go
The benchmark in the tweet show it is.
ithrow··on “Sustainability with Rust” post misleading about Go
I don't even get why Golang is considered a good language.

Because it's a more 'get shit done' language (with a fast solid runtime, good stdlib and and fast compiles), it's not concerned with giving its users the means and ergonomics to produce the most beautiful programs, instead, a language for the majority of backend developers.

ithrow··on Google leaves TODO message at the top of basic HTML homepage
The material used to kill white walkers.
ithrow··on Building for the 99% Developers
What do you mean by "default contents"?
ithrow··on Apple bans accounts of developers from Belarus
Or a rebellion starts eventually, which is one of the objectives of these sanctions.
ithrow··on Apple bans accounts of developers from Belarus
Now the West has taken their livelihood from them

That's the whole point, make the country poor.

ithrow··on Boring Technology Checklist
This a good advice for dealing with 'decision paralysis' which can make you waste more time than just trying out the options.
ithrow··on Boring Technology Checklist
Hiring wasn't in the articles' checklist though ;)

Valid point anyway

ithrow··on Not Another Framework
Every new release was like "we broke backwards compatibility but we got it right this time", rinse and repeat
ithrow··on Playwright: Automate Chromium, WebKit and Firefox
For generating PDFs like invoices in a webapp, is libraries like this the way to go these days or is still using a pdf lib the norm?

Pros of Playwright/Puppeteer:

Reuse existing HTML/CSS knowledge

Cons: Requires an external service or shelling out to an external process

Pros of using a pdf lib:

Probably better performance, simpler architecture by being in-process.

Cons: Ad-hoc language for designing the PDF.

ithrow··on Not Another Framework
What do you think cloudflare workers are and what is parsing the JS? ;)
ithrow··on Not Another Framework
But looks like you do need to have v8 running somewhere for production?
ithrow··on PRQL – A proposal for a better SQL
Queries start with FROM, it's called a README for a reason...
