jagger27··on Rogers Canada, please fix the damn internet in Canada

jagger27··on Ask HN: How would you bootstrap a telco?
I’d sooner sign a 10 year contract with Bell than get in on a crypto backed scheme for something as critical as my internet connectivity. Devil you know, etc. Absolute non-starter.

Besides, there are actually successful mesh nets already out there in the wild, like Freifunk in Berlin.

jagger27··on Ask HN: How would you bootstrap a telco?
TekSavvy is barely $5 cheaper these days for a co-ax connection. Not that I want to touch the Rogers network ever again if I have a choice. Not only are they incompetent, but coaxial copper is jittery, slow, and just overall awful. I want fibre.

It’s 2022 and I can’t get a fibre to the home connection in Ottawa less than 2km from Parliament. I’d get on a ladder myself to string up the fibre line myself if they’d let me.

Every time I want to self flagellate I take a look at the Swiss ISP init7[1]. 25/25Gbps to your door for 777 CHF/year. Infuriating that we can’t have that for any price here anywhere.

jagger27··on Ruffle: WebAssembly Flash Player Emulator
I love how my phone runs this better than Flash on Android ever did natively.
jagger27··on Rogers network outage across Canada hits banks, businesses and consumers
If this doesn't show Canadians that telecommunications are a public utility, I don't know what will. The CRTC's (Canadian FCC) own phones are down[1] today because they're a Rogers customer. If that doesn't scream regulatory capture...

jagger27··on 4th Gen KDE Slimbook – Linux Ultrabook with an AMD Ryzen 7 5700U
My eyes can’t handle the dimly lit room they once could, especially not when reading code. 400 nits is a minimum for me now.
jagger27··on Show HN: PDFs that are readable by human eyes only
Coupled with embedded fonts that’s pretty clever and good foresight from Adobe.
jagger27··on First true exascale supercomputer?
Yes. It is assumed that China is downplaying how capable theirs are.
jagger27··on First true exascale supercomputer?
It's wrong, and quite a funny typo. The interconnect is 100 gigabit.

jagger27··on Car Quality Is Slipping
Mazda has really stepped up their game lately. I love my Miata.
jagger27··on Ask HN: GPT-3 reveals my full name – can I do anything?
I’m very easily Googled as well and the prompt returned “Mick Jagger”.
jagger27··on Whatever happened to SHA-256 support in Git?
Thankfully existing Bitcoin ASICs don’t pose much of a threat because they’re only good for sha256(sha256(Bitcoin block)).

If a practical pre-image attack on SHA-256 comes around we have bigger problems than git.

jagger27··on 10mbps over 1km on a single pair of wires
I can't imagine a scenario where you already have a 1km long conduit that doesn't already have copper or fibre in it. Why would you choose to push a kilometre of brand new copper twisted pair line down an existing conduit just to squeeze 10 Mbps out of it? The hard part is already done and fibre equipment is pretty cheap.

If the conduit already has a phone line in it that isn't being used, sure.

jagger27··on Why is Apache clinging to OpenOffice?
That rolls off the tongue quite nicely in French.
jagger27··on 10mbps over 1km on a single pair of wires
Thank you, this wasn’t clicking for me until I read this. Of course there are countless places with a dead phone line hanging between them.
jagger27··on Web 3 is Flawed
> People like you are just pushing back so vehemently because it's popular to hate on crypto and NFTs right now.

And people like you hop into threads pushing your ideas forwards _so vehemently_ without disclosing your financial interest and involvement.

Disclosure: the above poster is the co-founder of an NFT-based gaming project.
jagger27··on Hertzbleed Attack
It probably didn't matter too much since Microsoft and Cloudflare were notified at the same time as Intel. Both of them run AMD hardware in their datacenters. It does seem weird though.
jagger27··on We got Linux on the iPhone, iPad and other idevices
iPads are just straight up good hardware, externally and internally.
jagger27··on We got Linux on the iPhone, iPad and other idevices
This is really all about the iPads to me. Having that "magical piece of glass" run free software for years to come is an absolute win.
jagger27··on Octagon Networks converts its entire balance sheet into Bitcoin
“we have always admired Bitcoin’s ongoing contributions to the advancement of humanity”

Word salad.

jagger27··on Germany paying $5.5B for Intel fab
Come on now.
jagger27··on Germany paying $5.5B for Intel fab
A $10 billion pipe sitting empty is good strategy?
jagger27··on Germany paying $5.5B for Intel fab
If Intel’s new EU fabs operate under the TSMC foundry model, is that not a good thing for the EU? Let’s say I’m a smaller company in France looking to get a chip made on a bleeding edge node. I don’t have existing contacts in Taiwan. Surely I just go next door to Intel, right? If Global Foundries couldn’t pull off the leap to 7nm even with ASML next door, who do you suggest is capable of doing so other than Intel, Samsung, and TSMC, and is EU based?

I have some confidence that the EU would set favourable terms for given the level of investment.

jagger27··on Americans are poorly served by their grocery stores
Yep we’re fucked.
jagger27··on Sick of Windows but can't afford a Mac? The cynic's guide to desktop Linux
Wayland has been the default for several years now, so yes I'd say whatever X-related pain (I can relate) has been eased since then.

I'm no Linux-on-the-desktop evangelist however, and still rely on a Mac for work use. My personal desktop runs Fedora currently, where I can afford to tinker. It's getting there.

jagger27··on Sick of Windows but can't afford a Mac? The cynic's guide to desktop Linux
Do these patches also apply to elementary OS? I find it to be the most visually pleasing distro out of the box.
jagger27··on Sick of Windows but can't afford a Mac? The cynic's guide to desktop Linux
Ubuntu shouldn't be recommended anymore. Flatpak won. Snap is a disaster.

If you ask me, Fedora is the new Ubuntu.

jagger27··on Make Your Own Chips for Free
Google a ton of dangerous unchecked power, absolutely. But it's a documentation style guide that sets off your alarms? Get over yourself.
jagger27··on Make Your Own Chips for Free
Where is it explicitly pushing a "certain political agenda"? Is there a footnote somewhere that says "these documentation requirements were sponsored by <x> for congress"? You surely mean implicit. What obligation does Google have to be apolitical anyway? To make you feel more comfortable?
