jcsalterego··on Ask HN: How is Git on Windows today?
The built-in IDE for PowerShell 2.0 is pretty good from what I recall, but I tend to just stay with the good ole blue console.

`Get-Help` and `Get-Member` are great discovery tools -- pipe anything to it, or do `Get-Member -inputObject $foo` and get all its properties.

jcsalterego··on Ask HN: How is Git on Windows today?
> - I run everything through the bash shell which works fine but is a pain to connect to Windows batch files. This makes automation harder than required.

What are you using bash or batch files for? Have you tried PowerShell as a replacement for batch files?

jcsalterego··on Ask HN: What to do in Portland?
I visited earlier this year and here were my highlights (YMMV):

  - Fuller's Diner
  - Powell's Books and Technical books -- a few blocks from each other IIRC
  - Pearl district in general
  - Tender Loving Empire (I went to the SW 10th St one)
  - Sweet Masterpiece (awesome chocolate + wine/coffee pairings!)
  - Saturday (weekend) market
  - OMSI (first time in a planetarium since the mid-90s)
  - Portland Aeriel Tram
  - Portland Art Museum
  - Japanese and Rose Gardens, Oregon Zoo

jcsalterego··on Ask HN: How have you applied computer science IRL?
I don't know about you guys but when I go grab dinner with my philosophical-type friends, we all share a fork and knife.

M = 1000 in Roman numerals, but the confusing bit is not reading them like Roman numerals (2000) but rather interpreting them as one thousand thousands, or one million.

Hardly. Probably IRC too much.

jcsalterego··on GNU Parallel - build and execute command lines from standard input in parallel
Sorry, those were features of parallel, not make (unless I'm mistaken).
jcsalterego··on GNU Parallel - build and execute command lines from standard input in parallel
I've just resigned to do a search for /EXAMPLES as soon as I need any.
jcsalterego··on GNU Parallel - build and execute command lines from standard input in parallel
The MacPorts version worked for me.

Perhaps the Portfile will have the patches you need to manually compile on OS X:

http://trac.macports.org/browser/trunk/dports/sysutils/paral...

jcsalterego··on GNU Parallel - build and execute command lines from standard input in parallel
make requires a Makefile, whereas one can pass parameters directly to parallel.

There also seems to be a few more options revolving around job success/failure and how to react -- a) ignore failed jobs and report how many at the end, b) cleanly exit as soon as a job fails and c) stop all jobs as soon as one fails.

jcsalterego··on Ask HN Emacs Users: What's in your .emacs file?
Oh boy, nethack_el does not play well with `longlines-show-hard-newlines`.
jcsalterego··on Ask HN Emacs Users: What's in your .emacs file?
I went .emacs bankrupt this summer.

gist.el, powershell-mode, yaml-mode, org-mode are a few I've taken out for brevity.

Otherwise, a few of these are emacs23 specific:

  ;; syntax highlighting
  (global-font-lock-mode 1)

;; add .emacs.d to load path
  (setq load-path (cons "~/.emacs.d" load-path))

  ;; nethack
  (add-hook 'nethack-mode-hook (lambda () (linum-mode 'nil)))
  (setq load-path (cons "~/.emacs.d/nethack" load-path))
(autoload 'nethack "nethack" "Play Nethack." t)
  (setq nethack-program "/opt/local/bin/nethack")

  ;; 4 spaces in objective-c
  (add-hook 'objc-mode-hook
            (lambda ()
              (setq tab-width nil)
              (setq c-basic-offset 4)))

;; straight to *scratch* buffer please
  (setq inhibit-splash-screen t)

;; use old navigation for line movement
  (setq line-move-visual nil)

  ;; linum mode
  (require 'linum)
  (global-linum-mode 1)
  (add-hook 'linum-before-numbering-hook
  	  (lambda () (setq linum-format "%d ")))
jcsalterego··on Oracle: the new "axis of evil" against Free software

jcsalterego··on Why Large Hadron Collider Scientists are Using CouchDB
I hope they didn't upgrade to 1.0.0.
jcsalterego··on Oracle: the new "axis of evil" against Free software
> No company is perfect. But these recent moves seem to indicate that the axis of evil has shifted south about 850 miles or so.

I looked on a map and 850 miles north of Redwood Shores leads me to believe he is a) admitting Adobe (Seattle) was the previous axis of evil or b) bestowing the title upon Canada.

Well, that's ten minutes of my life I'll never get back.

jcsalterego··on Patent for pull down to refresh mechanic.
Given his outward support of other developers' using the Pull Down to Refresh mechanism, this is a defensive patent more than anything else.

jcsalterego··on Dear people-who-run-Twitter, whom to follow, whom
The same goes for Facebook's blatant abuse of the neuter singular "their" instead of "his/her" -- which really can be resolved most of the time since Facebook usually possess people's genders.

Anyway...
