jsbisviewtiful··on Waymo passenger flees after car drives on Phoenix light rail tracks
Frustratingly Americans seem to inherently despise public transit (probably because owning a car has become so necessary due to poor city planning ON TOP OF the classist appeal) despite the advantages and local/state govs refuse to give public transit options proper funding and oversight - leading to even more distaste for public transit.

Personally I won't be using one of these cars because I want to contribute to other humans' paychecks, but I would much rather be using public transit over adding more and more cars to more and more roads/lanes.

All of the negative publicity around the autonomous cars is justified IMO because, even if these cars are "safer" than a human, they are still clearly not as safe as they need to be when considering liability, local laws, basic driving etiquette and the cost to other humans' incomes.

jsbisviewtiful··on Pebble Round 2
I switched over to Coros devices and have been fairly impressed with the performance over the last 5 months. Excellent battery life on the APEX series.
jsbisviewtiful··on UK company sends factory with 1,000C furnace into space
I had a similar thought regarding radiation - but also curious about cost to continuously launch materials and the overall reliability of recovery. Just seems like a lot of "what ifs" for the sake of finding funding.
jsbisviewtiful··on Microsoft has a problem: lack of demand for its AI products
> People use them out of corporate inertia

And now with how things are going with the American gov, foreign companies see security flaws on two fronts: Microsoft's AI's unreliability+invasiveness and the US gov's unreliability+invasiveness relating to its stateside companies.

jsbisviewtiful··on Why is there no Uber for plumbing/HVAC? (and why there ought to be)
Thumbtack has access to all sorts of handy people. Hired multiple people from the app for all sorts of needed home projects
jsbisviewtiful··on Things I've Heard Boomers Say That I Agree with 100%
> I don’t think this makes sense.

Neither does most of the article. Being upset about 2FA considering how incredibly easy it is? Pretty dumb write up. Lotsy of cheugy humor that's not really funny, as well.

jsbisviewtiful··on Sam Altman Subpoenaed on Stage
> Serving a subpoena in this manner is for publicity, not process.

Agree - but considering all of the companies holding copyrights that are pissed at OpenAI right now it's easy to understand the message being sent with doing this in a public manner.

jsbisviewtiful··on I Stopped Being a Climate Catastrophist
Took 2 minutes of Googling and little effort to provide these 2 of 10+ articles that immediately popped up. So, you are fully aware you could have found these easily but were putting out "pRoVe It" energy for whatever reason.

https://sustainability.stanford.edu/news/climate-change-cuts...

https://news.climate.columbia.edu/2018/07/25/climate-change-...

> “If the climate warms by 3 degrees, that’s basically like everyone on the planet giving up breakfast.” That’s a high cost for a world where more than 800 million people at times go a day or more without food because of inadequate access.

jsbisviewtiful··on I Stopped Being a Climate Catastrophist
> I have not seen evidence that there will be food system collapse driven by climate change that would be worse than those events

Doing my best to not come off condescending here in case you are being sincere, but the comparison of totalitarian gov crackdowns and local drought are not exactly comparable to an almost worldwide heat increase and less water availability for key high density areas... Once countries have to start hoarding their resources and other countries run out of resources, things will not be good and there's plenty of data, studies and articles out there discussing this that are not hard to find.

If you are being sincere, apologies, but living in the US lately has shown a level of bad actors trying to grift that's made it really difficult to be patient with climate change denial/dismissiveness.

jsbisviewtiful··on I Stopped Being a Climate Catastrophist
> Will a billion people die? Probably not

Really underestimating the amount of deaths that will occur when our food production systems start collapsing.

jsbisviewtiful··on Tesla's ‘Robotaxis' Keep Crashing—Even With Human ‘Safety Monitors' Onboard
In general, yeah. Personally, I don't even like getting in a Lyft/Uber that's a Tesla knowing the door can fail in the event of an accident.
jsbisviewtiful··on Linux gamers on Steam cross over the 3% mark
Considering how Microsoft is handling the Windows 10 to 11 upgrade it wouldn't be surprising to see many developers jump ship over to Linux. Some European countries/companies are already trying to get away from Microsoft due to security and monetary concerns, so why wouldn't developers and consumers do something similar?
jsbisviewtiful··on Is Health Insurance Even Worth It Anymore?
Anecdotal - A friend of mine decided to go without health insurance this year and then tore her ACL. So guess who is walking around with a torn ACL until next year because she simply can't afford the surgery...

The US healthcare system is rotten to the core but the populous refuses to educate themselves and keeps voting for losers that won't do anything to fix the system - so we all suffer. Republicans have been promising an alternative to the ACA (for some reason) for over 10 years now and have yet to produce anything - They are just interested in tearing down any progress and not offering fixes to current problems... but thanks to voter education and gerrymandering Republicans are able to keep their vulture capitalism ideals afloat. That's not even mentioning establishment Democrats that don't do much when they have the chance.

jsbisviewtiful··on The AirPods Pro 3 flight problem
Anecdotal, but recently gave up on AirPods and moved over to Beats Fit Pro to get similar feature parity with my iPhone. Thus far, the Beats fit way better than either my AirPod 2 or AirPod Pro 1's ever did. ANC and the lack of an extra mic are ever so slightly worse, but the battery life and fit are so much better. My $250 AirPod Pros had to be exchanged for a battery defect within 3 months and were regularly falling out during runs... I don't think I will be buying AirPods again, but anyone struggling with them should scope the Beats line.

Those gen AI images of cats playing poker won't create their own energy, you know T_T
jsbisviewtiful··on 'Death to Spotify': the DIY movement to get artists and fans to quit the app
Not owning what I stream sucks but I listen to a lot of music that I absolutely could not afford to pay $10+ per album for, nor $1-$3 per single for. Fortunately I own Massive Attack from the pre-streaming era but now I really have to go out of my way to listen to King Giz. No hate on either party for dropping the platform and I appreciate the stance being taken, but now I just don’t listen to King Giz because it would involve hoops.
jsbisviewtiful··on Liquid Glass Is Cracked, and Usability Suffers in iOS 26
Same boat. I started with the third public beta on my iPhone and the UX overhaul has not grown much on me. I reversed the Safari layout back to the previous, the combined Phone sections are not intuitive (and I almost reversed back to the previous with that too), the lock screen change is not bad but also not bringing more usability... The lack of new lock screen widgets is baffling. The overall appearance... it's hideous. Everything looks unfocused/muddy, colors look gross, readability is down and practically everything is clunky. I changed my Home Screen apps to all clear so I wouldn't have to look are the loud and oversaturated colors. Def not Apple's best work and confusing how we got here. The spam filtering for texts and phone calls is the prize change for the entire OS, which is funny because Apple Intelligence is still somewhat worthless even a year and a big update later. Genmoji, the only good thing about it, still fails 50%+ of the time.
jsbisviewtiful··on The Fourth Quadrant of Knowledge
The question is how many of those "knowns" are hallucinated
jsbisviewtiful··on Become unbannable from your email
Yeah the idea is good but spam scores would definitely crater your deliverability - and quickly. It's hard enough keeping spam scores within a reasonable threshold while sending subscriber approved marketing emails.
jsbisviewtiful··on The dangerous intimacy of social location sharing
I share my location with 10+ people, including my partner. My wife and participating friends all know, trust and love each other and none of us care if we know where each other are, but at times where we are coordinating a plan on the fly FindMy has been incredibly useful. If I’m letting weather apps and etc know and sell my location to data brokers, letting my inner circle see my location isn’t that deep.
jsbisviewtiful··on California needs to learn from Houston and Dallas about homelessness
How does Houston deal with those that can't be housed? Sure, 90% retention sounds nice for these people but California has limited housing/higher housing costs, in general, last I had read. The write-up even mentions rising housing costs or the Trump admin taking away their funding can crash the system, so unclear how easily this system could transfer to other cities. Sure, better communicating systems and a better hierarchy will lead to better outcomes for most orgs, but that's a pretty general statement about basically every org out there.

I also feel like this write-up sugar coats some of the actions Houston/Texas has been taking against non-compliance. Ticketing homeless people $200 for existing on the streets seems a bit counter intuitive - and Texas has been systematically shipping homeless and immigrants around the country (human trafficking) for political theater, so are they excluding that data? Probably.

I'm not an expert, but this write-up really comes off as one-sided since it's only talking about what's not working in California and ignoring some of the background stuff Texas is up to. Overall, do agree that better management and accountability would do other cities favors, but again, that's such an easy statement to make about any plan or org.

jsbisviewtiful··on Autism should not be seen as single condition with one cause, say scientists
> The overloading of the term autism

I have a former friend who listened to too many podcasts and self-diagnosed himself as autistic right around when his relationship was falling apart. The guy couldn't handle his girlfriend asking him to step up on some things so he decided his "out" socially was to call himself autistic to garner sympathy. The dude isn't autistic, he is simply terrible at accepting any responsibility for himself and doesn't care how that affects others. That was my first exposure to how out of control autism labeling was about to become and it's gotten a lot worse since then.

jsbisviewtiful··on The right wing is coming for Wikipedia
> Make of that what you will.

Conservatives are making up their own reality as they lie and hate their way through life. What I make of that editor ratio is that Wikipedia will remain truthful and less corrupt when presenting factual information - and not yet another propaganda mouthpiece.

jsbisviewtiful··on Oracle will have to borrow at least $25B a year to fund AI fantasy, says analyst
Same. I was always under the impression the governments of the world would put a stop to corporate takeovers of society but unfortunately the complete lack of education and care from citizens kept voting in corrupt capitalist politicians who only care about making profits. A future akin to the Alien, Westworld and Cyberpunk universes is now on a fast track - assuming climate change doesn't wipe us out first.
jsbisviewtiful··on EA Announces Agreement to be Acquired by PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners
If Bioware can squeak out one more good Mass Effect it would make for a great swan song. I don't really know what the last EA game I bought was other than the Mass Effect trilogy on Steam. I started avoiding Ubisoft games after Assassin's Creed 3 and EA followed a few years after that- so maybe 2015ish?
jsbisviewtiful··on Scientists say X has lost its professional edge and Bluesky is taking its place
IMO even Bluesky borders on “dead”. Not from an activity standpoint, but from the standpoint of “what the hell are people posting here”.
jsbisviewtiful··on Cracker Barrel Outrage Was Almost Certainly Driven by Bots, Researchers Say
> Don't you think the outrage would be real?

It would be real but only because people’s priorities tend to be incredibly silly. Like, giving children free school lunch is an original sin to probably a lot of the subset that gave a care about the Cracker Barrel logo… and for some reason there was a whole internet movement to remake a movie because a group didn’t like what was released (Justice League).

jsbisviewtiful··on U.S. hits new low in World Happiness Report
I would speculate Republicans are wildly happier when "their team is 'winning'" and Democrats would have a boost in happiness with Democrats in power, but nowhere near the swing of Republicans. Democrats, IMO, are more aware of the *real* current and longterm problems the US faces while Republicans listen to whatever Republicans say the "problems" are - "problems" that are too often very outlandish and not based in reality.
