jsbisviewtiful··on Starbucks: Location closures and elimination of roles
Feel bad for those employees. In the last 10 years I've gotten Starbucks maybe twice, both times because we were on the road and needed coffee... and it was the only option. A true fall from grace; The drinks are either sugar bombs or taste burnt and corp loves union busting.
jsbisviewtiful··on Death rates rose in hospital ERs after private equity firms took over
How in the world are private equity groups allowed to own hospitals? One of the largest hospital orgs in the US is a non-profit and so were most in my old state (non-profits on paper at least) so it's surprising to know hospitals can be for profit
jsbisviewtiful··on Why is Venus hell and Earth an Eden?
Wow thank you for laying out this info. I've always read the theories on the Venus floating colony but the info on pressure and temp I had no idea about.
jsbisviewtiful··on California issues fine over lawyer's ChatGPT fabrications
Doesn't even feel controversial. LLMs hallucinate and in law that's not acceptable. Increase the fine though to really punish those doing this.
jsbisviewtiful··on Tesla is looking to redesign its door handles following trapped-passenger report
The electronic door handle being a safety issue has been discussed for a very long time and to the point it's surprising it's just now getting this scrutiny. Personally, I don't want to ride in a Tesla and this is one of a few reasons.
jsbisviewtiful··on Samsung confirms its smart fridges will start showing you ads
> I sure as hell don't want them to be internet-capable

There isn't really a good reason for appliances to be online-capable and in some cases it puts homes at risk. If you have that and like it, cool - good for you, but that's "innovation" for the sake of having a reason to sell a new product... a product that can be hacked to break or shutdown via a firmware update.

jsbisviewtiful··on Samsung confirms its smart fridges will start showing you ads
Samsung appliances are notoriously not worth buying.
jsbisviewtiful··on Tesla Faces US Auto Safety Investigation over Door Handles
There are some dead people who wondered the same thing during the emergency that killed them.
jsbisviewtiful··on Massive Attack turns concert into facial recognition surveillance experiment
Massive Attack has 7 albums, so what are you talking about?
jsbisviewtiful··on My First Year Without an iPhone
I understand the sentiment about not wanting a smartphone but the amount of pocket space saved and efficiency of the device makes up for most of the shortfalls. In high school I wore cargo shorts/pants so carrying 4~ devices at a time was easier but nowadays I wear slim jeans or lightweight linen pants, mostly. Only needing my wallet and phone works too well when I don't have a bag. Definitely miss the quality of point and shoot cameras compared to a smartphone though
jsbisviewtiful··on The Worst Air Disaster You've Never Heard Of
To be fair the original article is so long that it has chapters. It’s super long read so it’s at least nice to have a shorter version
jsbisviewtiful··on EPA to Stop Collecting Emissions Data from Polluters
Always loved these two criticisms of Don't Look Up: 1) "people wouldn't be that dumb" 2) "it's too in your face". Well, the reality is clearly in our face about how dumb this all has been...
jsbisviewtiful··on Toxic "forever chemicals" found in 95% of beers tested in the U.S.
Speculation on my part based on other sources I've read, but likely related to water sources being contaminated in general. Curious to know however how additional filtration did not clean out these chemicals.

I am so tired. No matter how hard people try to keep this stuff out of their bodies, the lack of regulation and lack of enforcement --or even regulation and enforcement being way too late-- makes the act of simply keeping chemicals out of ourselves impossible. The chemicals are everywhere.

jsbisviewtiful··on Samsung taking market share from Apple in U.S. as foldable phones gain momentum
I had never seen one in the wild until I made a new friend recently, who has one of the foldable Samsung devices. My initial impression was that it is clunky, way too thick/large for comfortable pocket storage+running and it looks cheap for how much it cost... and last week my friend said he got his first ever dead pixel of any of his devices on the foldable phone. Take that opinion and info as you will.
jsbisviewtiful··on The Rise and Demise of RSS (2018)
I dropped reddit for my RSS, which I've had some version of since before the demise of Google Reader. RSS is such a great way to keep up on trusted sources, unlike reddit and other various social platforms. It's also a nice way to keep up on some forums, like Macrumors and HackerNews.
jsbisviewtiful··on The obstacles to scaling up humanoids
Robot vacuums are popular but maybe they were referring to the iRobot brand, which is rapidly failing.
jsbisviewtiful··on Tesla offers mammoth $1T pay package to Musk, sets lofty targets
Tesla sales have been plummeting in Europe and the US, recently the US drop was in the double digits. On top of that, the former buyer market for Teslas have started calling them swastikars and slapping “Bought before Elon went crazy” bumper stickers on their Tesla. Resell value for Teslas have tanked. Everyone I talk to is well aware of the drop in Tesla quality and the hidden crash test data. Tesla also just lost a ton of income from the loss of gov subsidies that Must himself helped destroy. The negativity is based in the reality of his “work”. He’s an overpaid hype man that lies about everything and steals the work of others only to crash and burn it - lately through culture war hate mongering and a sad desperation to be liked.
jsbisviewtiful··on Tesla insiders have sold more than 50% of their shares in the last year
> especially when the market as a whole is doing so well.

… is it? There was some news maybe within the last month saying only the top 15 or so of s&p companies were the only companies showing healthy growth and everything else below that has barely any growth, is losing value or is stagnant.

jsbisviewtiful··on Pebble Time 2 Design Reveal [video]
I looked at the Instinct 3 with Solar because I really wanted the best battery life out there, only to find out Garmin neglected to include topo maps (I wanted a device for hiking and backpacking so that's disappointing) in the Instinct 3 and despite being $400+ the casing is plastic. Odd choices for that price. I feel like the Garmin interfaces are also just... not great. Way too busy for such a small screen. The Coros watch face I'm using right now includes: time, date, day, elevation, steps, calories burned, heart rate and battery level all on a simple, uncrowded and easy to read b&w face... It's called Particular but I can't find a screen shot of it. It's leagues easier to read than what I've seen of Garmin and Apple (which for some reason still has their faces so locked down it's restrictive).
jsbisviewtiful··on Pebble Time 2 Design Reveal [video]
Garmins are incredibly expensive and not everyone wants a fitness tracker. Garmin's UX is also very disjointed between devices for how expensive they are. Plus, battery life tends to be garbage for smartwatches. I just sold my Apple Watch for a Coros because I was tired of trading battery life for features I didn't want/use and Garmins also require yet another subscription for some features. As someone who just spent the last month deciding on a new fitness wearable, much of the market is full of bloated devices that don't do everything right, but instead do a handful of things right with a laundry list of caveats.

There's still a strong market for dumb watches too, so a long-lasting "smart" device that does some things but not as much as an Apple Watch, Garmin, Coros, etc while still serving as a general information displaying wearable sounded enticing. Unfortunately Apple's lockdown of the iPhone for the previous Pebbles (which I think might still be a thing) and my need for fitness tracking are what prevented me from buying a Pebble.

jsbisviewtiful··on U.S. alcohol consumption drops to a 90-year low, new poll finds
I'd be curious to see a breakdown of this data by location/market and with sales data instead of a poll. I have a friend who works in the alcohol distribution industry and he's refuted these kinds of claims multiple times, but he also lives in a midwest state where there's not much to do but eat and drink so perhaps it's all relative.
jsbisviewtiful··on Is the A.I. Boom Turning Into an A.I. Bubble?
There was an article I saw this morning saying only the very top of the S&P 500 are the stocks showing substantive growth in recent years, companies below that have been relatively slow to show growth. Additionally, since the pandemic and Ukraine war started global cost of goods have been rapidly increasing, much faster than they should be. Now with AI, the market in the US is losing a lot of jobs - both entry level and above. The latest US job numbers were so terrible Trump fired someone to try and cover it up.

I'm not sure what else needs to happen to show the economy has been doing poorly for all but the richest segments. The return of a blatant and severe caste system and mass starvation?

jsbisviewtiful··on Supreme Court formally asked to overturn same-sex marriage ruling
People who have "religious objections" to doing their society provided job need to go live on a farm and mind their own business, like the Amish do. The rest of us are trying to move forward, not backward at the whim of some random hate-fueled individuals and or groups.
jsbisviewtiful··on Hubble catches sharpest image yet of 3I/ATLAS
Neat! I haven't been keeping super close tabs on 3I/ATLAS. Was it identified as a comet early or is this a recent development?
jsbisviewtiful··on Lithium compound can reverse Alzheimer’s in mice: study
> I reject this kind of blind safetyism.

You said you searched to learn more about lithium, but somehow missed that it's highly recommended to be administered by doctors due to side effects after long term use. Anything that damages your kidneys or thyroids can kill you, so calling it "blind safetyism" is silly.

jsbisviewtiful··on I'm tired of stupid people treating me like I'm an idiot
I’m really feeling this recently. So many folks around me talking up AI because it googled something for them or functions as their personal “yes man/ma’am”.
jsbisviewtiful··on Cognitive decline can be slowed down with lifestyle changes
lol yeah let’s fund more pharma bull shit and kick the can for actually solving the problem. More CEOs need yachts. Diet education and curbing the corps poisoning us is far more effective.
jsbisviewtiful··on Cognitive decline can be slowed down with lifestyle changes
Apparently a lot. Between 2021 and 2023 the US obesity rate was 40%+.
jsbisviewtiful··on Every Reason Why I Hate AI and You Should Too
> Is anyone actually claiming they produce wholly novel research?

I would argue companies performing layoffs because they think LLMs can do the work of a human is practically the same thing. There was even another article posted here today saying a bunch of companies are hiring humans again to fix the terrible work LLMs are doing, so it's fair to assume C-level jerks do think LLMs can produce something to the level of novel research and are finding out LLMs can't.

jsbisviewtiful··on Every Reason Why I Hate AI and You Should Too
> Stop insulting us and show some f*king proof, or go back to playing with LLMs until you can make them do the things you claim they can do.

Everything revolving around these LLMs so far as been tech hype culture and similar "think of the future" vibes. IMO we never see proof of this because right now it simply doesn't exist.
