>The irony is that they don’t eat their own dogfood. In other words, they relied on yesterday’s best of breed tools to prevent and detect the attack.

I don't think she understands what eating your dogfood means.

I like the ad unit at the top of the blog page.

The spikes you are mentioning might be due to the OS lowering your process priority. If you are on a FreeBSD machine, try running rtprio(1) to avoid the OS changing the process priority upon extensive CPU usage.
kqueue··on A word about color
That was worth mentioning then.

The only review I need that has ads everywhere on the page, and is trying to advertise the link to bring in more traffic.
kqueue··on Move Lang
hello = ^(name){ "Hello "+name } repeat {times: 3} ^{ print hello {name: "John"} }

The syntax makes no sense. How can this be aimed towards people not previously familiar with programming computers?

And how can this be considered intuitive?

>When creating a function, we can specify function arguments, which are sorrounded by parentheses and put in between the "^" and the "{". These "arguments" are just like variables, but which are only available inside our function.

What's wrong with python for newbie programmer?

kqueue··on Goliath: Non-blocking, Ruby 1.9 Web Server
You can use rpc + message queues for that.

client request1 --> web server --> rpc server --> work queue

<process other requests>

client request1 <-- web server <-- rpc server <-- done queue

Of course you need to create consumers to operate on the work queue, process the jobs and put them in a different queue (eg. 'done queue') signaling the rpc server that you finished the job so that the rpc server in turn will reply back to the web server.

kqueue··on Review my startup
I noticed that loading the main page results in requesting 19 css files and 8 js files. I suggest combining those to provide a better loading experience.

How is that better than webkit's inspector?

And why every tool on HN now is called a startup?

kqueue··on Tornado 1.2
Event driven development is the worst kind of programming because of the extensive use of callbacks and state maintenance/tracking. You never know the control flow by reading the source.

You have to maintain state all the time and keep track of inconsistent/impossible states.

That to me is not cleaner or easier.

I work in one of the big corps, and it never fails, event driven servers tend to be way more buggy.

Python out of the box doesn't have coroutines but you can always use gevent for that.

Python threads are real pthreads, now they are not optimal and should not be used in high load servers, because pthreads are not that light weight when you are running 10k of them. Creating servers based on python threads is as clean as coroutine threads but slower. Hence, coroutines are always favorable over them.

Yes you did in your comments.

user> mail-archive? are you crazy? that site has been around forever & I’ve found more answers there than I can count.

you> What mailing lists are you finding useful on mail-archive that aren’t available elsewhere? Do you ever visit mail-archive directly? I’ve only seen mail-archive clutter up SERP pages, often with the question I have going unanswered. I see no point in duplicating content on Google Groups, only with a significantly worse UI.

The point is, they are all doing the same. mail-archive, osdir, markmail archive mail, place ads next to them. Some provide more features on top but the main idea is archive public content and make money out of it.

You can always use gmane to search apache archives, at least it is ad free.

kqueue··on List of content farms to block with Google Personal Blocklist
It is not different that mail-archive at all. You bashed mail-archive in your comments because it doesn't provide an added value. markmail doesn't provide an added value either.
kqueue··on Tornado 1.2
Based on coroutines or threads?
kqueue··on Tornado 1.2
I don't know how programmers can convince themselves that a framework based on callbacks (event driven) is a good idea.
kqueue··on Tornado 1.2
node.js and tornado are both event driven asynchronous solutions.
kqueue··on List of content farms to block with Google Personal Blocklist
it is missing the following:

- osdir.com

- markmail.org

kqueue··on Bing smacks Google in new usability test
The number of users that use Bing is much lower than the number of users that use Google.

This comparison is similar to saying that book X that has a total of 4 ratings, 5 star each is better than book Y that has 100 ratings, 4 star each.

kqueue··on Poll: What languages are you fluent in?
That has absolutely nothing to do with the language.
kqueue··on Explain “Event-Driven” Web Servers to Your Grandma
event driven development should be avoided whenever possible. coroutines exist for a reason.

Writing event-driven applications is very prone to errors and invalid(impossible) states.

kqueue··on Google algorithm change launched
The fact that efreedom results are showing up in the results is irritating by itself. We all know efreedom is spam, and so does Google.

Now I am always on alert when clicking on a link in the results to avoid the spam pages like efreedom, expertexchange and whatnot. Why not just remove them from search results?

They are causing enough bad publicity to Google.

kqueue··on How Organized Spam is Taking Control of Google's Search Results
Agreed. The article's title deliberately said Google, as if the other engines are doing a better job.
kqueue··on How Organized Spam is Taking Control of Google's Search Results
http://duckduckgo.com/?q=nfl+jerseys

I believe Google's results are less spammy than duckduckgo for this particular query.

kqueue··on Google algorithm change launched
Here's a query that shows efreedom above SO. I did site:efreedom.com and picked few titles until I found one.

query: Mailengine with .NET API

The right page that should show up is

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1720900/mailengine-with-n...

If you google the link below you'll see that the page is indexed.

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1720900/mailengine-with-n...

However, the page doesn't show up when you use the query I mentioned.
