lambda_dn··on Asahi Linux alpha release
Good point, I may scratch that itch
lambda_dn··on Asahi Linux alpha release
I would switch to linux if they could get BT to work. Macbook Air M1 owner here I need airpods to work otherwise it's not a viable switch. This this is true for many users. Please focus on that guys.
lambda_dn··on Asahi Linux alpha release
Does bluetooth work? If you can't use airpods with a mac it's a no go imo
lambda_dn··on Incident with GitHub Actions, API requests, Codespaces, Git operations, Issues
This is why you should have your code on multiple remotes, i.e. Azure DevOps, Git labs, self hosted git server.
lambda_dn··on Google Analytics 4
There are many free better solutions out there, being cookieless and in the EU doesn't equal $99 a month.

How well would a new cookieless search engine hosted in the EU do charging $99 a month to use when Google/Bing exist?

lambda_dn··on Google Analytics 4
Your pricing is an order of magnitude too high, given there are better free solutions out there. Would be like me selling a search engine service for $99 a month when Google and Bing exist.
lambda_dn··on Launch HN: Kable (YC W22) – All-in-one platform for API products
"We require a credit card on file before provisioning live API keys"

Err no thanks.

lambda_dn··on We’re the founders of Substack, we just launched an iOS app. AUA
Pure marketing post, will never use your app or service. This is hackernews not facebook
lambda_dn··on Apple M1 Ultra
They could be secretly working on their own cloud platform, with their data centres having a choice between M1, Pro Max ultra instances. $$$$
lambda_dn··on Apple Event March 8, 2022
3999 not bad
lambda_dn··on Apple Event March 8, 2022
With the display I hope.

They were never the size they are now, it's a different company than pre Steve Jobs return days. They are too far ahead like Amazon in online retail.
lambda_dn··on I am the healthiest person I know, and I got cancer
A few years at most and that will be sitting in a care home with dementia. The body is very resilient so life life to the max.
lambda_dn··on I am the healthiest person I know, and I got cancer
People doing their regular "cardio" and eating their soya crap have the belief they are somehow never going to get ill or die. We all are, why live a dull monotonous existence only to live a few years longer in a care home not knowing who you are. I would rather live life to the max.
lambda_dn··on I am the healthiest person I know, and I got cancer
I guess being healthy isn't just about disease but wellbeing. You could drink/smoke/eat fast-food/never exercise and live till your 90 but you might feel shit every morning.
lambda_dn··on I am the healthiest person I know, and I got cancer
I know plenty of people who smoked/drank alcohol frequently (not alcoholic), never exercised and ate a "bad diet" and lived to 70/80 and others who "lived a healthy lifestyle" who dropped dead/died < 70.

I think genetics/randomness/accidents/homicide/genocide/suicide etc are 95% the cause of mortality. Drugs/booze/smoking/obesity are much smaller than people think.

lambda_dn··on Launch HN: Courier (YC S19) – Developer infrastructure for product notifications
Yes I see that, incredible work done you guys have done. Just based on a surface level glance. Surprised this hadn't been done before (great ideas always seems obvious in hindsight), but you guys nailed it. Congrats.
lambda_dn··on Launch HN: Courier (YC S19) – Developer infrastructure for product notifications
Sorry I see you have plenty, thought it said somewhere you only had 4-5.
lambda_dn··on Launch HN: Courier (YC S19) – Developer infrastructure for product notifications
No worries, I get the idea and think it's a great execution of that. Im sure it is/will be a big success especially more so when you have a few more providers.
lambda_dn··on Launch HN: Courier (YC S19) – Developer infrastructure for product notifications
I see, so a customer would be paying you to use use their own providers? Not sure I see the value in that, but good luck.
lambda_dn··on SPAs Were a Mistake
SPAs were a good solution when page load/rendering times were longer. However with todays internet speeds, edge caching, HTTP3/Quic as well as todays chips and browser implementations page reloads are barely noticeable so you get all the goodness the browser gives you out of the box creating MPAs.

There are still some examples were SPAs are useful such as replacing complex desktop applications but 95% of web apps don't need it.

lambda_dn··on Launch HN: Courier (YC S19) – Developer infrastructure for product notifications
Looks very slick, also great domain name. I assume you'll be adding more providers.

Does the cost per message include the cost to use the providers service (i.e. sendgrid?)

lambda_dn··on Ask HN: Single-person creations that have stood the test of time?
Not a lot of people realise that Windows 1 through to Windows XP was written by Bill Gates alone from his bedroom. Wasn't until Longhorn that he brought in Steve Ballmer to help out.
lambda_dn··on Linux from Scratch
I agree it's important to understand how linux eco system work, if you are interested.

I don't think LFS does that, it's simply page after page of .configure..make..make install. It would be more valuable to read a sysadmin book on unix/linux and play around with a minimal distro.

lambda_dn··on Linux from Scratch
Or How to waste a few days copy/pasting configure commands, watching the output of make to be left with a minimal, insecure and unmaintainable system. Only think it will teach you is why distros and package managers exist.
lambda_dn··on Announcing Actix Web v4.0
Evidence of that? Or is the whole software world to believe the words of nextaccountic?
lambda_dn··on Announcing Actix Web v4.0
The whole reason for Rust's existence was for Servo so using it as an example of its use is disingenuous at best.

Ok one bit of AWS runs on Rust.

C/C++ runs 99% of the the worlds software including OS's/browsers/GUI's/Compilers/Virtual machines/Games/Aircraft/Spacecraft etc etc etc.

"It'll be" same was said of Java

lambda_dn··on Learn Rust by writing a small OS
I tried to learn Rust but found it very difficult and complicated to learn. I kept having to fight with the compiler to do even the simplest of memory/ lifetime management. I am a seasoned C developer and for me C was much easier. I think this will be the downfall of Rust as I hear it all the time from other developers who try it out.
lambda_dn··on Announcing Actix Web v4.0
"Actix was found by third parties abusing unsafe and when they were auditing most libraries found for Rust on the internet. When the unsafe code was audited it was found that on misuse, it can lead to serious vulnerabilities. So they opened a bunch of issues and added a lot of patches and PR’s in GitHub."

Good luck though

lambda_dn··on Announcing Actix Web v4.0
Evidence that Microsoft use Actix? Im sure if they did you would have posted a link.
