Google has little reason to change anything - chances are most people who type in 'birthde' are looking for 'birthday'.
Two sites may allow you to do the same thing, but one of them may be superior from a design perspective.
A site that is stable, maintainable and easy to implement would be superior from an engineering perspective.
The design perspective depends on engineering aspects, since the user experience would be bad if the site is broken.
Obviously that only works if you know the company isn't actively looking for a real designer, in which case your work will disappoint.
Years of experience is difficult to measure. If I have a node.js build script that I update occasionally, do I have one year of node.js experience after working on the project for a year?
A pure front-end developer will know Javascript much better than a back-end dev who started using it at the same time.
I also spent 3 years working with MySQL before actually learning to use joins or grouping.
Doing several independent project instead of a large one only makes it more impressive, but doesn't indicate greater skill.
Sometimes I wonder if I should add small half-baked projects to my portfolio. I may only have worked on them for two days, but they would make me look super prolific. Do you think that's a good idea?
"sometimes php developers commit configuration files and things that are used in production where they shouldn’t be."
Not sure if I'm parsing this correctly. Should the files not be in production or should they not be committed? Is this just about overwriting the development configuration in the config file?
Example: I use Python a lot, but had never used it with MySQL until yesterday. I had MAMP installed and I just wanted a Python package to run queries. I tried to install MySQL-Python, but it couldn't find mysql_config. So I find it and update my PATH. Then it can't find some files. I google it and it turns out MAMP MySQL doesn't include some parts and I need to install another version of MySQL to make it work. It works now, but the MySQL Workbench export/import feature isn't happy with the MySQL version number.
Especially since many open source projects are compiled from source and have many dependencies I'd love an environment that just works.
I'm a developer, so would try to limit myself to two. (Although I've used a third one in the logo before). One way to reduce the number of fonts might be to find alternative ways to differentiate the three parts (e.g. through background color, borders, font color)
Can you describe what you are trying to convey with each font?
- I found the copy after "Try a demo" a bit confusing. I wasn't aware of the concept of creating the form by sending an email, so the first sentence didn't make much sense initially. Maybe make the "To get started, copy the example text below. " more prominent and break up the "We'll reply..." sentence into something shorter.
- Once I've created a form and go to the homepage, could you show a link to it on the homepage?
- When I got the email to fill out the form I wasn't sure if I was supposed to edit the quoted text (even though that's exactly what you were telling me to do). Maybe add a link to the web form just in case.
Keep up the good work!
What's the difference between the gray and blue markers on the map?
The "gift babies" link in "Why all the mating?" gives me a 404 though.
You could put a duplicate of the button at the bottom of the list or just show it when there are no resources in the list.
I see that separating the profile and account setting makes sense. Maybe I was confused because I didn't expect to have as many profile settings. You could add a link between the two pages to clarify it further.
Good luck!
You're right, the UX could use some work. Could you move the "Add resource" below the list of resources? Initially I also didn't realize that there's a difference between "Edit profile" and "Edit account".
When I clicked the "Add resource" button nothing happened (Chrome on OS X Lion).
As an idea, maybe there's a way to suggest the next resource in a list to the user?
