nmilo··on Zigbook Is Plagiarizing the Zigtools Playground
I remember reading the original zig book post and how weird it smelt. Even though it’s LLM written there’s more than a trivial amount of effort put into it. What could anyone possibly have to gain by doing this?
nmilo··on Open-source Zig book
Because the first thing you see when you click the link is "Zero AI" pasted under the most obviously AI-generated copy I've ever seen. It's just an insult to our intelligence, obviously we're gonna call OP out on this. Why lie like that?
nmilo··on Ask HN: How do you get over the fear of sharing code?
I mean this in the best possible way but your code is not special. Plagiarizers are gonna plagiarize and if not from you then from the other 1000 open-source student-friendly portfolio projects. Career wise you should be building up your GitHub ASAP, anyone can make a fancy looking frontend or whatever you do but I can’t know if someone is good without looking at the code (and I would probably never care enough to go out of my way to request it).
nmilo··on Minecraft removing obfuscation in Java Edition
Community is the entire goal. The technology just has to meet some minimum threshold. You know any 13 year olds playing Minetest?
nmilo··on Programming with Less Than Nothing
A bloated language means the language has bloat i.e unnecessary features, e.g C++ is a bloated version of C even if you can write the same programs in less code.
nmilo··on Why UUIDs won't protect your secrets
Title could have been “Python’s UUIDv7 only has 32 random bits” and just leave it at that. 2500 words to say “if you don’t authenticate access to a url then people can access it” wow shocker
nmilo··on Vibe engineering
Funny dances like "writing tests" and "planning"
nmilo··on What if I don't want videos of my hobby time available to the world?
> I could, I suppose, ask each person that I see with a camera “would you mind not including me in anything you upload, please?”. And, since everyone with whom I’ve spoken at games, so far anyway, has been perfectly pleasant and friendly, I’d be hopeful that they would at least consider my request. I have not done this.

I feel like the reasonable place to start is here no? Why write this whole post when this would probably be easier?

nmilo··on Zig feels more practical than Rust for real-world CLI tools
Fair. Python was probably a bad example. I think we need more languages like Go because even with its downsides, for projects that don’t need explicit memory control I’m picking it over rust and zig every time
nmilo··on Delete FROM users WHERE location = 'Iran';
In theory sure but in practice not really and to say regular citizens have a direct say in specific geopolitical decisions is absurd, given how unpopular many recent decisions have been.
nmilo··on Zig feels more practical than Rust for real-world CLI tools
I don't know why anyone would write CLI tools in rust or zig. I/O is going to be your bottleneck way more often than GC, in fact I don't really get the GC hate outside of game dev, databases and other memory intensive applications. Why not use Go, Python, etc? People try to make a false dichotomy between memory safety vs. non-memory safety when really it's GC vs. no GC --- memory safety without it is going to be hard either way. More time should be spent on justifying to yourself why you shouldn't be using a GC, and less on which kind of GC-less language you use.

(If you go no GC "because it's fun" then there's no need for the post in the first place --- just use what's fun!)

nmilo··on Delete FROM users WHERE location = 'Iran';
This the exact same as the email from the post, but the other way around. Either both normal Iranians are responsible for arming Russians and normal Americans are responsible for sanctions, or neither are. In general I don’t like blaming people for the actions of their government.
nmilo··on Meta’s live demo fails; “AI” recording plays before the actor takes the steps
It's well known Meta AI is shit. But I could probably make an app that can run this demo in an afternoon. The glasses part here is insane and I don't know why everyone is fixated on the tacky AI part. It's like if I invented the car and you complained that it's really hard to crank the windows down. Be happy it's even there!
nmilo··on MCP tools with dependent types
I don't think this is a protocol issue, the LLMs simply weren't RLHFed to do that
nmilo··on Zig's New Async I/O
The original “function colouring” blogpost has done irreparable damage to PL discussions because it’s such a stupid concept to begin with. Of course I want async functions to be “coloured” differently, they do different things! How else is a “normal function” supposed to call a function that gives you a result later——obviously you want to be forced to say what to do with the result; await it, ignore it, .then() in JS terms, etc. these are important decisions that you can’t just ignore because it’s “painful”
nmilo··on I'm more proud of these 128 kilobytes than anything I've built since

nmilo··on Four Years of Jai (2024)
Where exactly did I suggest that?
nmilo··on Four Years of Jai (2024)
I meant more like storing closures to be used later after any locals are out of the stack frame, but tbh that's an abstraction that also causes allocations in C++ and Rust. On the other hand, no idea how JS internals work but I know in python getting the length of an array takes five layers of pointer indirection so it very well could be pointer to closure object -> pointer to list of closed variables -> pointer to boxed variable -> pointer to number or some ridiculous thing like that.
nmilo··on Four Years of Jai (2024)
Probably misspoke, returning or passing anonymous functions cause allocations for the closures, then calling them causes probably 4 or 5 levels of pointer chasing to get the data that got (invisibly) closed over
nmilo··on The Halting Problem is a terrible example of NP-Harder
Isn't this NP-complete? The "solution" here would be the steps to take in the path which can be found by brute-force

Wikipedia:

> 2. When the answer is "yes", this can be demonstrated through the existence of a short (polynomial length) solution.

> 3. The correctness of each solution can be verified quickly (namely, in polynomial time) and a brute-force search algorithm can find a solution by trying all possible solutions.

nmilo··on Generate videos in Gemini and Whisk with Veo 2
It will be like YouTube. Distribution will be hard and most of it will be slop but every now and then you’ll discover something so good and so creative and it couldn’t have possibly existed before that it makes the whole experience worth it. The best creative works are led by one person and I’m excited to see what people can come up with.
nmilo··on 45-year mystery behind eerie photo from The Shining is believed to be solved
This is a distinctly western internet phenomenon. It’s decadence. There was a tweet or something that said these people 100 years ago would be chronicling every species of beetle in their local area or designing intricate alternate history about how roads would work in an anarcho-capitalist society. Now that’s autistic, but this is like on another level. Would this guy’s mom be proud he found the identity of the guy at some random party from 1921 who’s photo got stitched over with a picture of Jack Nicholson and included for a few frames at the end of the shining?
nmilo··on 45-year mystery behind eerie photo from The Shining is believed to be solved
The internet has sparked so many of these useless investigations, same with all those lost media forums, how many man hours were spent trying to find some obscure 1999 failed pilot for some Nickelodeon show no one’s watched. They stitched Jack Nicholson’s face over a photo of some guy from 1921. Who cares who the guy is? Are these people that bored? Is it some OCD tendency that every trivial detail in history should be logged and archived?
nmilo··on AI 2027
The whole thing hinges on the fact that AI will be able to help with AI research

How will it come up with the theoretical breakthroughs necessary to beat the scaling problem GPT-4.5 revealed when it hasn't been proven that LLMs can come up with novel research in any field at all?

nmilo··on 4o Image Generation
I didn’t mean art. I meant visual internet content of all kinds. Influencers promoting products, models, the “guy talking to a camera” genre, photos of landscapes, interviews, well-designed ads, anything that comes up on your instagram explore page; anything that has taken over feeds due to the trust coming from a human being behind it will become indistinguishable from slop. It’s not quite there yet but it’s close and undeniably coming soon
nmilo··on 4o Image Generation
Visual internet content is completely over. Pack it up
nmilo··on The young, inexperienced engineers aiding DOGE
There’s a severe crisis every 10 years. Do you really want to be at a point where the next one topples us?
nmilo··on In Zig, what's a writer?
No, GenericWriter takes a function at compile time and it gives you a GenericWriter struct that calls that function (at compile time), no function pointers needed.
nmilo··on In Zig, what's a writer?
This is exactly Zig's strength, not its problem. The flexibility/lack of interfaces allows you to choose the correct abstraction for the given task. In C++, every writer is `anytype`, in Java every writer is `AnyWriter`, in Rust every writer is `GenericWriter`. They all have tradeoffs but "fits better due to language design" shouldn't be one of the tradeoffs considered.
