nocoder··on At Amazon’s Bookstore, No Coffee but All the Data You Can Drink
I am curious as to how will you define "quality" here? Is it based on wisdom of the crowds or expert reviews or your own personal consumption pattern?
nocoder··on Uber Posts $708M Loss as Finance Head Leaves
I like how the WSJ headline tries to imply casualty between loss and leaving of finance head. Why cannot these guys simply share the news instead of trying to imply the cause.
nocoder··on Ask HN: Books to learn applied maths?
Thanks. That's helpful
nocoder··on Ask HN: Books to learn applied maths?
Thanks for this. I checked out the book ToC and found it interesting. One question, does this book assume the knowledge of the tool to start with?
nocoder··on Ask HN: Books to learn applied maths?
Thanks for this. I checked them out and they sound very interesting, do you recommend that I begin with one of them or is it fine to read them concurrently?
nocoder··on Ask HN: Books to learn applied maths?
My bad, I studied it long back & did not realize that it was experimental physics. What I meant was I really liked the approach in the book, it made understanding concepts really easy for me. I don't do it really well understanding from theoretical principles & working upwards, instead going from application to theory works for me. As far as my interest goes, I am interested in mathematical modelling of social & biological systems, i know this might again be too broad but inputs will be appreciated.
nocoder··on Scientists Tie 52 Genes to Human Intelligence
I am curious, what is the definition of human intelligence? Blanket statements like A being more intelligent than B don't mean much outside of specific context. It is likely that certain kind of genes influence certain specific ability like math or soccer more than others. The idea of blanket intelligence does not provide much room for us to optimise for specific areas of intelligence.
nocoder··on Not a Dot-Com Bubble, Not 2007, but a Nasty Mix of Both
The real blow-up will happen when we stop seeing mainstream articles about a upcoming blow-up.
nocoder··on 2017 Barkley Marathon features one finisher, heartbreak for Gary Robbins
This is mind blowing. I do a bit of running, some half marathons etc. but nowhere close to Ultras and this just amazes me and also excites me. I would want to push myself to do this at least once...see how my body responds.
nocoder··on Programming won’t be automated, or it already has been
I think because its so easy & cheap to create websites using wordpress, we have so many websites. Without that I think a lot of demand will disappear. So while there is some impact on web designers, it will be at the low end and unlikely to be huge.
nocoder··on A hot bath has benefits similar to exercise
Such articles are so frustrating. What is with our fixation to trying to do as little as possible for max. gains. It feels like there is this whole group of individuals out there who are trying to convince (without solid evidence) that exercise is replaceable my other things.Human beings are not efficiency optimization machines. Moreover, everyone who exercises regularly can tell you that fitness is the low hanging fruit. There are so many other benefits of exercise like opportunity to meet new people & benefits to mental health and more.
nocoder··on Airbnb raises $1B at $31B valuation, became profitable in 2016
Fundamental challenge with star rating system is your perception of what counts as 5 star & my perception of what counts as 5 can be very different. It basically comes down to what your personal standards of something 5 star are. I am generally a very adjusting person, so minor glitches might not lead me to move from 5 to 2 star but someone could be more particular than me in which case his 5 star will move to 1 star at slightest issue.
nocoder··on Nike’s Vivid Shoes, and the Gray Area of Performance Enhancement
It is sort of hypocritical when people talk about unfair advantage in the context of only doping or such technology. I think unfair advantage of some sort is built right into all sports & life in general. Sometimes it is genetic, geographical and lot of times it is because your sports federation has money to afford world class facilities as your nation has a lot of wealth to invest in sports. By leaving the decision of what constitutes as unfair in the hands of few, we are inhibiting technological progress and this is bound to be a cat and mouse game since authorities deciding what is unfair will always be behind the ones looking for advantage. It is also providing incentive to people with money to invest it in finding those advantages. I think a technology, performance enhancing drug on anything such should be allowed as long as everyone in the sport has access to it and there are no adverse health impacts.

Edit - Grammar & typos

nocoder··on Ask HN: Non-technical readers of HN, why are you here?
I heard about Hacker news on the Introduction to Recommender systems class on coursera where they talk about HN algo for ranking articles. I have a job as marketing guy but I am very interested in technology and analytics, trying to even learn programming so this is a great place
nocoder··on Raymond Smullyan has died
This is why I love coming to HN. Once in a while you discover something really beautiful. I come from India & never heard of Raymond Smullyan, but I just discovered his wonderful puzzles & writings. Thanks.
nocoder··on To Live Your Best Life, Do Mathematics
Maybe if Elsevier was open source & easily accessible more people would read it. I have tried reading many journal papers as a layman but in most cases got blocked by a pay wall. I dont like to rely on newspaper headline but like to go the source and because of paywall I get thwarted.
nocoder··on Cambridge Analytica: The Data That Turned the World Upside Down
I think if you are ideologically opposed to Trump then you find it tough to accept something like this. Please also note that HN by nature tends to be more on the liberal spectrum. Like everything else, it is a bit of everything. It's Clinton complacency with Trump's strong messaging + democrats backstabbing their own voters by sabotaging Sanders. Being someone from marketing, it is easy for me to see that "MAGA" is much catchy & better slogan than "Stronger together" (what does it even mean?), it is difficult of any American to argue against MAGA vs. Stronger together since you will be considered "unamerican" & nationalism is currently a theme globally. Trump kept things simple and easy to grasp. If you read Daniel Kahneman & Amos Tversky's work, he basically appealed to our system 1 minds which prefers shortcuts and jumps to conclusion. (which does not mean that people who does this are somehow bigots because we all do this all time, in fact living would be really difficult we were ultra rational and thoughtful about everything)
nocoder··on Unexpected Consequences of Self-Driving Cars
Not necessarily. Sometimes lack of infrastructure fast forwards the technology to next iteration instead of holding it back. For example in India, majority of people's first phone was a mobile phone & they never had landlines & first experience of internet was via mobile phones instead of dial-up or fixed line. Now with a company called Jio providing free 4G internet lot of people are directly going to experience 4G from 2G without transitioning to 3G since the cost is going down. Similar shift might happen in payments with models like UPI (unified-payment-interface) where many people will do digital/cashless payments without ever doing netbanking or owning credit cards.

I expect a truly intelligent AI to navigate around such issues in fact, such issues will provide playing field to create robust AI since it will learn to handle & respond to unpredictability.

nocoder··on A Month Without Sugar
Actually both are true, glucose and fructose have way different biochemical impact on the both. For starters, only 20% of glucose is metabolized by the liver, rest goes to muscles, brain etc. While fructose completely goes to the liver, since muscles and brain cannot make use of fructose directly. Another effect fructose has is that it sort of suppresses ghrelin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghrelin), the hunger hormone. So it is highly likely that you will not feel full when you have food with fructose. The advantage of having sugars (especially) fructose in fruits is that due to fibers you tend to feel full faster. Fiber also helps in ensuring that fructose is releases at a slower rate vs. a can of soda.
nocoder··on 2017 is not just another prime number
Wouldnt a lot of instances of 2016 be simply because of its use as the year "2016" instead of anything mathematical? I found 38K instances of 2015, 42K of 2013 and 39K of 2014. I am not familiar with OEIS so just asking.
nocoder··on Amazon peer-to-peer selling
Amazon actually tried doing this with junglee.com. The challenge of course is generating traffic for a separate entity, plus it is more costly. So now it has sort of integrated Junglee with Amazon where, junglee powers the used & refurbished business.

P.S: In India, all Amazon listing are third party, since legally foreign investment is not permitted in ecommerce, so Amazon.in actually just functions as a marketplace not a retailer.

nocoder··on [dead]
Mainstream media has problem with fake news because right now they are not the ones creating the fake news, so they feel insecure.
nocoder··on People's underestimation of AI
Few thoughts below, I think possibilities of future being considered in most of AI takeover discussions are some sort of linear projections of our imagination based on our understanding of current scenario, past history and future expectations. Our minds are many times not able to consider outcomes beyond any of these, for example when you read history of World War 1, we find most of the experienced generals and strategist did not expect the war to be as horrific and as long as it turned out to be, since their expectations were based on past experience and current knowledge (which turned out to be inadequate). Similarly, most of the people who witness atomic bombing of World War 2, did not really expect to have no nuclear wars in next 70 years. The prevalent expectations then was to consider nuclear wars being imminent. Similarly, after the moon landing, there were not many people who thought no human will go to moon in next 50 years.

I think one possibility that is not being considered is the ability of humans to upgrade themselves via some combination advanced genetic and hardware. What if you could design AI that can help upgrade humans, again this would lead to creation of new superclass of humans.

The other thought I have is, on one hand we expect AI to be really intelligent to take over most of the human skilled jobs but still expect it to be controllable by few human beings. There is always a possibility that superintelligent AIs might have some different motivations other than ruling over human beings. As a human being, even though I am much more powerful I probably do not have much motivation to rule over rats or cockroaches, same could be true for AIs. We might be too insignificant for them to waste time on us.

nocoder··on About Those Air Cushions in Amazon Packages
The issue I think is amazon has boxes in a few standard sizes. As a result for many products, they end up shipping in much larger boxes. I think it is economical to procure large amount of boxes in few standard sizes vs. have small quantities of many different boxes. This does lead to increase wastage though.
nocoder··on Ask HN: What do you want to learn in 2017?
Learn programming, I have dabbled a bit in Python and R mostly for data analytics but never achieved anything at the level of proficiency, I always get frustrated. I am from marketing but I get so many ideas about apps that I feel knowing to do my own thing would be great. Also run a sub 2 hour half marathon and start a blog about running.
