nomadiccoder··on I'm Wil Wheaton. I Live with Chronic Depression and Anxiety. I Am Not Ashamed
'anxiety is the dizzyness of freedom' ― Søren Kierkegaard, once one accepts ones mental illness and instead of running from it, accepts and attacks it head on can one truly make progress. The paradox is that [mental] illness hinders ones ability to do so.
nomadiccoder··on What to Do After Finding Hot Connectors on Overhead Power Lines (2017) [video]
underground is more resilient to damage but harder to do maintenance and actually much more expensive at the distribution level

The profit can be in reducing errors, being better than human control, etc. which can reduce time spent on the line
nomadiccoder··on Ask HN: What are the things keep in mind while giving/preparing for a tech talk?
The why is much more important than the how. The job of the talk is to convince people to read your paper. Focus on motivating your work, overview how the approach was done and the results but the setting for the problem is much more important.
nomadiccoder··on Why Do We Care So Much About Privacy?
I dont feel that the question was truly answered. WHY do we care? The author writes about human behavior and discusses the 'natural right' of privacy but arent natural rights just customs from previous generations. Observing human behavior might suggest that privacy somehow is a desired trait from natural selection. ie when pooping, animals are more vulnerable (maybe) suggesting that privacy somehow aids in security from preditors. Financial Transactional data privacy allows a competitive advantage on future trades.

Basically id like to hear arguments that get down to the fundamental reasons why humans care about privacy.

nomadiccoder··on What is Enlightenment? (1784)
Steven West's podcast `Philosophize This` has a neat explanation of how this work came to be and paints a picture of what life was like during this time. I think episode ~50ish

nomadiccoder··on Building a Home Aquaponics System: The Basics
Interesting, In my experience of trying to start a home aquaponics startup (and quickly failing) I found that it is very difficult for this to be small scale, i.e., places like growing power, green and gills, farmed here, which have a comercial aspect are more successful. And 2 it is not cost effective at all. While I loved watching the fish, the difficulty with the plants, lights, nutrients, and automation system was a nightmare that was barely rewarding in terms of produce quantity.
nomadiccoder··on Building a Home Aquaponics System: The Basics
Yeah conservation of matter, you need minerals other than carbon, oxygen and sunlight to make food therefore if human in the loop is introduced you need to take the human byproducts into the system as well
nomadiccoder··on The Vanual – Guide to Living in a Van
Its actually not that hard, Ive only been woken once at night.
nomadiccoder··on The Vanual – Guide to Living in a Van
Saving money on rent is a side effect of vanlife, not the premise. Many do it for the geographical freedom.
nomadiccoder··on Ask HN: Why does my credit union check if I'm logged into Steam and Reddit?
I use ublock origin to block ads and ghostery to block a lot of trackers, theres some configurability to block some stuff from social media accounts maybe it will help..?
