null0pointer··on Linux touchpad like a Macbook: goal worth pursuing?
How frequently are you traveling? And is it usually for extended periods of time? I'm curious for more details, if you can share.

I'd also like to know more about your config restoration process. Is it literally just running your script? What other things does it do?

My process is fairly streamlined as is, with most things except software installs done automatically. But I'm always on the lookout for improvements.

null0pointer··on Certified Translator, stuck in Venezuela, looking for remote freelance work
Google Translate still gets a lot wrong. It's good enough to understand if you just need to translate foreign language text to something you understand. But for professional documents it's nowhere near adequate.

Another point is it misses a lot of context. My girlfriend is fluent in English and Chinese and has an Art History degree. That domain knowledge makes her quite valuable as a translator for Chinese galleries. There's quite a lot of research involved when she does a translation to find the correct terms for techniques, mediums, styles. Translation is more difficult than it would seem on the surface.

What is an "accredited investor" anyway? And why does this index fund need to only be available to them?

null0pointer··on Fake news was illegal in 17th century colonial Massachusetts
Yeah this seems to be the disconnect. A lot of people will intuitively think (myself included) something like this. "You said Hillary had 90% chance to win, but Trump won. Therefore your prediction was WRONG". It actually takes a little more thought to understand that a Trump victory was a possibility in the model all along. And that you cannot say whether or not a prediction model is accurate based on a SINGLE result.
null0pointer··on Facebook announces Clear History feature
I felt the same. I've never been a fan of his but I have to say, after watching bits and pieces of the testimony, I felt sympathetic for his position. Senators pushing for yes/no answers to questions where there are many many variables and different situations to consider.

Pretty much any question on the topic is too complex for a simple yes/no. And it's abundantly clear to me that 99% of the general public just do not understand that at all. Most people (senators included) were just looking for him to say something damning which they can endlessly bring up in the future.

I don't believe Mark got into this position out of malice. Facebook just grew naturally over time and turned into the beast it is today. How many times have you been building an app and thought "If only I knew <x> about my users I could provide <really cool feature>"?. Each one of these little steps encroaching on user privacy is small and hard to notice for the users and even for the engineers. But over time they add up and at some point there is an "oh shit" moment where you realise what you have.

Yes, some of us have been warning about this for _over a decade_. But the benefits clearly outweighed the costs in the eyes of the users. Only now are the general public starting to realise what the actual costs are.

null0pointer··on Teenager facing prison for downloading unsecured files from government website
A better (more accurate) analogy than finding an open window/door is that of asking a government employee for data.

Kid: "Hi, what is the personal info in that file?"

Employee:

What they should say: "You are not authorised to see the contents of that file."

What they actually said: "Sure, here's all the information in that file."

I have just set this up a week ago at my apartment. I use hostapd and dnsmasq on a raspberry pi to make it a wireless AP. It is connected to the primary router via ethernet and uses iptables to route wifi traffic via ethernet. Then I just installed OpenVPN to route traffic via a VPN. I haven't tested for DNS leaks yet as this is an ongoing project.

There are a couple of other things on my todo list still. Such as easier switching of VPN node (current method is to ssh in and restart OpenVPN with a new config...) and ad blocking.

Hope this can help you although it's still a bit immature and quite hacky IMO

null0pointer··on iPhone Notches on Android Phones
Have you even used the iPhone X? Myself and every person I've talked to do not even notice the notch after a short period of use. And I was initially very skeptical of the notch too. A better mental model is that the iPhone has 2 additional 'ears' of usable screen.

Compare this to the S8 which not only has physical bezels on top and bottom, but also software status bar at the top and software home bar at the bottom cutting further into usable screen space.

Not to mention Apple have nailed the gesture based UX. It feels totally natural and is a pleasure to use. Whereas any time I have to use an android phone it feels clunky and poorly executed.

Call me a fanboy, whatever. But I have never found the same quality experience on an android phone that I get with my iPhone.

null0pointer··on Facebook denies 'listening' to conversations
It's possible she had done some searches before talking to me, I'm not sure. The video was unrelated though. National chain pharmacy so they certainly have some kind of data sharing scheme.
null0pointer··on Facebook denies 'listening' to conversations
I have a similar anecdote. Girlfriend was having some symptoms, we briefly talked about it then walked to the pharmacy and bought a pregnancy test. Maybe 30 minutes after purchasing the test we watched a youtube video on her phone. The ad on the video was for the exact test we bought.

I figured that youtube got the credit card info from the purchase but I was shocked at how quickly that translated into something showing on the screen. I've always thought about these things in the back of my mind but this was still eye opening for me.

I'd never had it happen to me personally since I aggressively block all ads :)

null0pointer··on Update for customers with Bitcoin stored on Coinbase
Unjustifiable decision IMO. They are basically stealing money from their customers. Regardless of your thoughts on the matter BCC will have _some_ value (no matter how little). Coinbase has always been very pro-core.
null0pointer··on Largest Bitcoin mixer, Bitmixer.io, closes down
I'd like mining pools to offer sale of coinbase bitcoins for people who truly value their privacy. I would buy a 12.5 BTC coinbase transaction for maybe up to 13 BTC. That makes the pool's effective block reward 13 rather than 12.5 BTC. More reward means more users so the pool would get bigger, mine blocks more frequently, more profit from coinbase sales. I honestly don't see a downside.

NB. When I say 'coinbase' I mean coin generation from mining reward. Not the company. (I hate that they deliberately chose a name to confuse new users)

null0pointer··on How to Interview Engineers
I used to be reluctant to call myself an engineer. I don't actually get to do too much engineering in my work. But I've seen too many less qualified people calling themselves engineers so I might as well... Besides, my degree is from the Engineering faculty at my university rather than Science where the CS/SE degrees are. At least that's how I justify it to myself.
null0pointer··on Be Careful Celebrating Google’s New Ad Blocker
Another interesting and simple ad model that I saw was on a bitcoin gambling site. The ads were a small image banner at the top of the site. Each advertiser would choose a daily rate to pay. Then each time the page was loaded an ad was selected randomly weighted by daily rate (eg. Alice pay $1/day and Bob pays $2/day, Bob's ads show up twice as often). I like how simple it was while still allowing advertisers to bid against each other. The total ad revenue of the site would scale directly with website traffic. There are no trackers, no third party services, and no JS. Just simple get what you pay for. Want more? pay more.
null0pointer··on A peek under Bitcoin’s hood: Writing a client that can create a transaction
A lot of people are equating this to theft. While I can see their point, the concept of ownership in bitcoin is closely tied to control of the private keys. In this case many people control certain weak private keys so in a way you are giving your money away by sending to these addresses.
null0pointer··on CRISPR eliminates HIV-1 infection in live animals
I'm glad your friend is able to do that. It makes sense to directly fund the research when you directly benefit from their findings. I'm curious about the direct funding process. Does the lab approach him saying "we need money for this equipment"? Or is it like an ongoing regular donations sort of thing?
null0pointer··on Bitcoin Mining is NP-hard (2014)
I'd love for there to be pure technical discussion however the development of most of the major cryptos boil down to political bickering at this point. What a sorry state of affairs :(
null0pointer··on Man jailed indefinitely for refusing to decrypt hard drives loses appeal
I've wondered about scenarios where you can legitimately claim to not know the password to decrypt a drive. A few different cases I can think of which may be ruled differently by a court.

1) I use a password manager so I don't know the password. However, I have the means to acquire the password.

2) I use a password manager but somehow lost access to it unintentionally.

3) I use a password manager and lost access to it by design. (eg. Using a dead man's switch of some kind that deletes it if I don't "check in" for some period of time)

4) I used to know the password. However, I suffered a traumatic brain injury and cannot recall it.

I obviously don't have the answers but I think these are interesting to think about as different points in a large legal grey area.

null0pointer··on PEP 308 and why I still hate Python
I come from a mathematics background and when I first saw comprehensions I really liked them. They read remarkably similar to Set Builder Notation [0]. I think so long as you don't go crazy they are perfectly readable. But at the end of the day the onus is still on the developer to ensure their code is readable.

null0pointer··on Neural Net Trained on Mugshots Predicts Criminals
Every country has different laws so a 'criminal' in one jurisdiction may not be a 'criminal' in another. The training data is fundamentally flawed as the target classes (criminal and not-criminal) are defined by largely arbitrary rules.
